PKD recs? Reading Ubik right now and loving it, also enjoyed Time Out of Joint in the past.
start with the chinese
>>25407907He looks like Simon Roper here
>>25407907well just read em allFlow my tears is easy to readDo Androids is "deep"VALIS (and its serie) is schizo-babble and harder to understand but ultimately worth iteverything is worth reading, even the short stories.
>>25408028The VALIS quadrilogy is NOT schizo babble, it's an exposition on Gnosticism.Ubik was freaking awesome. Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep was my introduction to his writing, and it was so much deeper than the movie that it blew my mind. I still can't get Mercerism out of my head. The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch is one of the most unsettling books I've ever read. PKD does horror, and does a damn fine job of it.Also, do NOT miss his short stories. 5 volumes, 125 entries. Too many classics to mention.
Read his short stories. Second Variety still creeps me out.
Scanner Darkly is his best and probably his most accessible. Other than, and after Ubik, Flow my Tears or Three Stigmata.
UBIK is literally my favourite science fiction novel. Everything that happens after the protagonist gets to Des Moines is just so moving and mind-blowing.
Three stigmata of palmer eldritch is his best work ever and insanely good with all the shit that goes on with that story. Truly mindbending. From a literary standing point, it feels multidimensional. Few authors can pull that off.A scanner darkly is his second best, paranoid almost cyberpunk storyUbik I liked a lot but the story seemed quite simple compared to the above two. I feel like ubik inspired the matrix in some ways.Man in the high castle, do androids dream of electric sheep are both boringI really want to read the VALIS trilogyI've read a bit of his exegesis and it was interesting
>>25407907Are you me? Those are the only two titles of his that ive read.
Why do people love Ubik so much? I read it after seeing how beloved it was, with high hopes. What I got was a bunch of nonsense and an ending that just has a bunch of stuff occur out of nowhere to explain the mystery.
just skip straight to exegesis
>>25410919You had to really pay attention to detail to understand how it all came together. Also, keep in mind that one of PKD's main themes was what we now call "hyperrealism", i.e. the idea that we don't really know what's real and what isn't.
>>25410919desu the final stretch of Ubik was a little disappointing but it was still a cool read
>>25407907i always thought this pic was lee harvey oswald lmao
>>25411550i thought it was a young l. ron hubbard
>>25407907a scanner darkly is great, honestly didn't see much sci fi in it. clearly his farewell to the hippie movement but it's only aged better with time.
>>25411166But there's no real way to infer what is going on before reading the end. It's just surrealism and then an asspull explanation in the last few pages.
>>25411942I loved the final.FUCK YOU double reveal lol.And Joe Chip despite not having an overtly explained backstory is such a compelling character.PKD reslly just wrote the archetypical "Man out of Time" and then put him... Literally.. out of time.Kino
>>25407907VALIS is my favourite, but Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a must-read. I also recommend the entire VALIS trilogy as well as A Scanner Darkly. I’m reading Zap Gun at the moment. It’s not a must-read but interesting to see how much he laboured over a novel he hated. Also check out Man In the High Castle if you’re interested in the I-Ching.
>>25408315This. Second Variety is wonderful and a precursor to DADoES?
Short story collections are worth reading. It doesn't get better than Scanner Darkly, VALIS, and Androids.
>>25411965But he wasn't out of time, it was literally just the "it was all a dream"-ending. Am I misremembering?
>PKD wrote a billion books>normalfags only ever reference about the same 3Posers!
>>25412280Just give me the best stories
>>25412338It's KIND of both
>>25407907So in The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, are the future-trips real or are they just a figment of Bulero's Chew-Z addled hallucinations?
