Just completed these two relatively recently (within past month or two, including a large break) and I thought the Beevor one was excellent. I have heard some people shit on Beevor before but I didn't see anything wrong with his work here.As for the second book, the one focused on the German perspective. It was lacklustre to say the least, pretty much everything in this book was said in Beevors but with less overall detail of the battle & subsequent pocket.While the focus on the second book is the Germans, it does feature a perspective from a Hungarian infantryman that Beevor had discovered in Russian archives. So it would've been cool for the author to look for Italian, Romanian & Croat diaries in archives to add more depth. But alas it features a handful of accounts not already featured in Beevors book.However the stories from inside the pocket were absolutely batshit insane. Like Schmidt taking over control from Paulus during it or T34s ramming JU-52s on taxi to take off.
>>25413939The book that I read this week after these two was picrel.Not very long about 180~ish pages in total (excluding foreword & commentary from some Korean peace activist)Some of the accounts are truly heart breaking of children succumbing to the direct wound of the Atomic bomb from severe burns & flesh being gouged off of them. To secondary injuries like glass shrapnel in their flesh & succumbing to radiation poisoning. It's a book that really tugs at the heartstrings & makes you feel the horror of the immediate aftermath of the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bomb.The picture in reply will be the next book I will be reading.

I prefer reading contemporary accounts of things without the broader context. To see how people actually seemed to treat the world they loved in. Even if annotated editions help a ton with the details of it all. But I find it really hard to track down travel journals, diaries and the like. Anyone have a good place to look?
