I will never understand the "to the point where social relations or health are damaged" part, even outside of hoarding books. Like how are people so fucked that it becomes that kind of a problem? I buy 500+ books every year and read 20 or 30 - but how is it going to impact my health and getting shitfaced with Martin and Pete on Friday???

People who actually have this problem usually have some form of persistent neurosis and build up to detrimental levels over years or decades so the amount they buy isn't really the issue anyways.

He had approximately 10,000 books in his apartment and the landlord filed complaints about him and basically forced him to move. The article in NYT is really interesting.
