Is this worth getting? I'm interested in having lots of commentary/explanatory notes from different sects of Islam.

Hijacking this thread
How do I get into Sufi mysticism?
Read the Qur'an once.

I've no idea OP. Why would you want to, though? I don't believe islam presents any ideas that are unique or interesting.

Depends on your motivation for reading. If it's for some deeper connection and understanding of a people, go for it. If it's just a superficial desire to be "well-rounded", you probably won't enjoy it, since you'll know it's all fiction and/or embellished as you read it.

>Is this worth getting? I'm interested in having lots of commentary/explanatory notes from different sects of Islam.
Yes. Does a good job at that, but even then I would advise you to cross-read with various other translation/commentaries. Because you will soon find out that mainstream traditions have built a wall around the text and rarely allow anyone to second-guess their interpretations.

You read some Sufi mystics and decide they are overreaching 90% of the time

My understanding is that the Study Quran is pretty comprehensive in terms of notes, and will include both Sunni and Shia perspectives and maybe others. However I don't trust Nasr. The others associated with the Study Quran seem good though.
>>
It's excellent. It is the only work available that offers an English translation alongside extensive commentary based on traditional sources. The essays in the back are excellent.

Pray to God every day. Pray to God for guidance from human beings. Pray for blessings on the Prophet. Take shahada and begin practicing.

You must find a shaykh with silsila going back to the Prophet. If there is no shaykh you are not on the Sufi path. If there is no Shahada and no observance of the daily 5 prayers and other obligations, you may not even set foot on the Sufi path.

The "Study Quran" is a sanitized English "translation" for Western audience.
If you want an accurate, faithful translation of the Quran you have to go with a translation that tries to disregard the traditional Moslem context and exegesis surrounding the verses some passages are embarrasing in Arabic and so a Moslem translators intentionally try to dilute its meaning in Arabic to fool Western, non-Moslem audience.

I (Christian) have multiple old and more recent English translations by Christian/non-Moslem Islamic scholars (Rodwell, Palmer*, Pickthal, Dawood) which are more concerned about plainly and accurately translating the Arabic text into English than Moslem translators who want to sugar coat the shocking passages.

You cannot evaluate a translation without comprehension of the language in question. If you have secondary sources who are familiar with the language and make the precise criticisms you have made here, mention them by name and provide a source if possible. Otherwise this is nothing but hot air and your opinion is meaningless and handily disregarded.

Also the western Europeans did not have access to a Latin translation of the Quran until well into the 1600s and were, in the meanwhile, totally ignorant of its contents. Just be aware of that.

Finally, I give you personal advice: since you are a Christian these matters are not relevant to you and you should be studying the Bible, not the Quran. If you are concerned about Islam as opposed to Christianity simply pray to your Lord and trust in His command of history. You are decentering yourself spiritually by preoccupation with what does not concern you (which is a failure to trust in the Will of God actually).

Based on prophetic narrations muslims are advised with cautiousness when interacting with different Islamic sects, more so than with other faiths even. There are several widely accepted explanations like the Tabari, Baghawi, As Sa'di tafaseer. The most famous is the one by ibn Kathir, it's not the most comprehensive but still very informative.
If you intend to find out which sect is the correct one, then there is a Hadith for that in Jami' al Tirmidhi n. 2641. You we're right to seek the truth in the Qur'an as well as it's the rope from His mercy for us to ascend towards it, understanding the verses must happen according to the understanding of the generation that was present sturing the time of revelation. The speech of God doesn't require feminist marxist or other corrupt reinterpretation as you light have guessed.

Read Rumi's Masnavi. I recommend the Whinfield translation because it summarizes the tales but keeps the didactic parts in verse.

Just stick with Plotinus and the gang rather than the "OC do not steal" sufi shit lol

Lo! This is the translation for winners.
Allah is the Enormous, the Sublime and the Quran is a great gift.

I'm not sure if I get the fascination with sufi "mysticism". We're scared to make a connection with God but we seek something mindblowing and mysterious. Sounds like a curiosity with the world of jinn and there have definitely been some sufis engaging with jinns. Or is it the fact that they seem secluded and disinterested in earthly pleasures yet are welcoming of others? Like some eastern monks in an Islamic context? I don't think they hold any secrets worth knowing, not anymore than any sunni scholar.

>: since you are a Christian these matters are not relevant to you and you should be studying the Bible, not the Quran.

then why do you own multiple Quran translations?

Robert Spencer's "Critical Quran" is better.
This "Study" Quran was composed by Muslims and offers little to the student. By contrast the same publisher did a Study Bible that was full of real scholarship.
Spencer is what he is, but at least he went to Ibn Warraq who has a command of the scholarly literature.

I'm interested in Muslim commentary on the Quran to understand what they believe about it. I don't think some zionist seething about the Quran is what I need.

>Allah is the Enormous, the Sublime and the Quran is a great gift.
"Allah" is a creation of a fake pedo prophet thoughbeit.

Nope, and even christians say that they worship the same god as Muslims. The age of Aisha(RA) is Ahad report, and most "Christians" can only criticize Islam on the grounds of secular liberal morality, showing how far their religion has gone done

>The age of Aisha(RA) is Ahad report,
English muthafucka

So what was Aisha's age? Was she a child when momo penetrated her? Answer with a number so we can laugh.

>So what was Aisha's age?
https://yaqeeninstitute.ca/read/paper/the-age-of-aisha-ra-rejecting-historical-revisionism-and-modernist-presumptions

most likely 9-14 depending on sources and Hadith science

> Was she a child when momo penetrated her?
no because a woman is a woman when she is passed puberty, is a 16 year old Woman a child because of her age or is she a woman when she passed puberty. This is why most criticism of Islam is just about secular atheist feminism and how Islam does not uphold atheistic feminism
