I don't have aphantasia and I don't struggle with picturing scenes and environments and objects and such, but I have some serious issues when it comes to reconciling between the author's description of a particular character and how I see them in my head. I often automatically associate them with people that I know IRL or figures from pop culture, and I end up spending way too much time closing my eyes and having to readjust their appearances, especially their faces, in my head, and usually to no avail, immediately reverting back to what my mind had already defaulted to during its first encounter with the descriptive passage.The last time this happened was a few days ago when I read two lines about a thin grey haired man and I went on with imagining him as this decrepit ass meme from 20 years ago for the whole story. Even when the author continued detailing more and more features that weren't fitting pic related, my head was stubbornly stuck on this specific depiction of him.I realize that this isn't a huge problem and seeing that character as the author intended him to be probably isn't as important as getting a feeling for what the author is trying to convey through his appearance, but it's the kind of annoyance that really breaks the immersive flow of the writing and I end up reading more abstract stuff just so I won't have to deal with this.Anybody else here face a similar kind of issue with their imagination? or am I just so skullfucked by pop culture that I'll need some extra mental work to rid myself of these associations.
To be fair a lot of writers use really odd terminology to describe people. Like if you say the woman has a noble equine face I instantly visualize a horse person, which is obviously not what the writers are going for when using that term.I don't know what the fuck that is actually supposed to look like on a human face.Or a button nose, that isn't literally a button. And so on.Really writers descriptions of faces are fucking weird in general.
