Anyone here given it a read? It's like ready player one if it were good and had actual consequences.
not literature
>>25411936It's fun enough slop that is bursting at the seams with millennial "um, that just happened...." and "Hey's right behind me, isn't he?" humor. Worth a read/listen if you're looking for a palette cleanser, but overall trash. It's a testament to normies attention span that shit has 8 books
>>25412195Neither are half the topics on this board.
>>25411936This is some really great literature
>>25412195That's rather snobbish of you>>25412246>It's a testament to normies attention span that shit has 8 booksI don't think that makes the point you think it does>>25412290Thank you. I don't come to this board often but I see multiple philosophy threads that don't reference shit.
>>25412246>overall trashCare to elaborate on why? Have you actually read them? Cause it sounds like you're just parroting good reads reviews.
>>25411936it says a lot about the human condition desu
>>25412246>millennial>look inside>it's a GenXer, againWhy is it that literally every single fucking time I've seen something described as "millennial writing", there's a GenXer responsible?
I've read all eight but you're not allowed to talk about them on /lit/.
peak reddit, im amazed it isn't the biggest thing in the world right now. not enough gay for netflix? they can just do gender changes surely.
>>25412619It's been shilled a lot lately, wouldn't surprise me if a movie or tv adaption was coming up soon.
>>25412619>>25412623It's already greenlit on Peacock.
>>25412619I would say because it's extremely nihilistic and disgusting on almost every level. But then, shit like The Boys and Preacher gets made so that can't be it.Has there been any GAMER stuff in media that's been successful? I guess there's the witcher series, but that's fantasy slop. I mean Ready Player One-tier stuff. DCC is a "LitRPG" with a very heavy VR/gaming aesthetic. Maybe that's what's scaring people off. It also isn't that big a franchise.
I got to the chapter with descriptions of all the items/skills/whatever he just got, which I believe was several pages long, and dropped it. I finished WoT so I can endure a lot of shit, but that is my limit.
It's a good book. Very well written and exciting. I can imagine all the menus, and power ups within me when I read those stat changes
OP herePic related, me after enjoying the latest Dinniman adventure! Can't wait for the next instalment!
>>25412870These kinds of videos still disgust me on a deep level.
>>25412870Reminds me of that movie Dodgeball, where the guy ambushes the female lead outside her house and manages to convince her to let him inside, and it's just unicorns everywhere. Except this is like ten times worse. How do you not go insane living inside this thing?
>>25412962Those act as sets used by social media personalities. If they weren't maintaining an on-camera brand for clicks they'd live like a normal person.
>>25412870Mad how people out there replaced religion with consumerism.
>>25412568Gen x wrote the shows millennials consumed and replicated. They made you.
>>25411936Read 'em all. I had ____fun, so now I'm banned from /lit/.
>>25413340>some dude 10 years older than you created the shows you watched as a kid.Drooling retard.
>>25413340So what? Not all millenials consume this slop and it's all made by the soulless retards from a previous generation of pathetic cynics? Except for Joss Whedon, who might be old enough to be a boomer, these writers are essentially all Gen X, so it would be Gen X writing.Actual millenial writers seem to make things that are more fully irreverent or swung back to being more sincere again.nta and not a millenial btw
>>25412691>I believe was several pages longIt was bad but not THAT bad, anon. It gets better as the story progresses. After a while you only get pop-ups for important stuff.
>>25412994Not consumerism. Materialism. Which is Satanism.
>>25412870Holy ADHD
>>25413340Nice goal post moving.
>>25413367>people in their 20s and 30s had a job when you were in your teenswow
>>25413434Yeah I'm sure they were big-time showrunners, too!
>>25412870if i was a 10 yr old boy again i would love to chill in this guys pedolair.
>>25413699When I was a 10yo boy I liked rooms full of old electronics and machinery. That guy's place would be like getting trapped in a mall play area.
>>25413725ur probably right, it is a bit much. i just wanted to use pedolair in a sentence.
I'm not very familiar with modern fantasy or litrpg but I have read Carl. Someone explain to me why Dinninman is /lit/'s anitchrist.
>>25413804lit started off as basement dwelling larpers playing d&d. this guy is just some chad who was brought along to a nerd group by his girlfriend, immediately saw the potential to monetize the nerd fun and wrote all these books (the main character is just himself inserted into an rpg world). he self-published online, and has made millions soon to be tens of millions. the books are fun easy reads, and he has natural ability to tell a good story without much effort.this is the antithesis of your typical poster, who is a social awkward and stunted tortured artist type, who hates the world, cannot get the motivation to write dinnerman is notoriously prolific and will do the twilight thing of rewriting the entire series from the pov of the secondary character when he is finished with the current storyline. he is a covid success story, being bored during covid he decided to write all this out and one shot the whole thing.
>>25412195fpbp. faggot series for faggots.
>>25413827You’re projecting and trying to mix your insults in a weird way. How are /lit/ users simultaneously the greasy nerds who love dnd and also the sad artist boy? Those aren’t the same people at all in real life. The most interaction the sad arty people have with dnd is the type you attribute to dinniman.>chad>pic relatedLmao. Are you going to start calling Ernest Cline a Chad too next?you’re very obviously one of the actual nerds or failed normalfaggots whose insecurities leak everywhere when you’re in a space with people who rightfully shit on your dork interests for manchildren and have no recourse but to try to project the masculinity that you do not and will never possess.
>>25413827So the typical venom from /lit/'s collection of bitter failed writers. Gotcha.
>>25413859sorry i should clarify, lit _started_ as the person i described, but then moves to a big city and feels embarrassed by their previous hobbies and tries to fit in with the new crowd by becoming the art arty type, without actually becoming it fully because they did not grow up in a big urban center or get abused as children like their new friends did. so they project onto others out of feelings of resentment due to their previous hobby which they abandoned now becoming mainstream and popular.>>25413861this guy got it, hopefully it is clearer now, sorry im not being paid by the word count only post count.
>>25413888You clearly do not get it and your obsession with an origin of playing dnd seems like a you thing. Imagine coming to a place for discussing literature and getting upset because people have fun taking the piss out of a writer who produces the literary equivalent of bad superhero movies. The only reason you’d do that is if you actually were one of the people who enjoyed that crap and got your feelings hurt when you came to a place where people are not let to enjoy things if those things are slop.>>25413861That’s more like the way /lit/ acts towards someone like Sally Rooney, who, though overrated and a bit of an industry plant, is a better writer than most people here and successful in a way that people here want. People make fun of Dinniman or Sanderson because their writing is bad in a funny way. They’re entertaining, but it’s because they sometimes manage to be funny bad, the way people usually do with movies
>>25413912is there really objective value to art though? doesn't that defeat the purpose and turn it into manufacturing or something you can automate with machines? if it was slop wouldn't it be unpopular and we'd never be discussing it?
>>25411936People say isekai sucks and then they read this garbage.
>>25413965I say this particular isekai sucks *because* I started reading and tossed it in the garbage after 4 chapters
>>25411936I can’t understand this success at all. It’s worse in every way than Reddit Player One, which was horrendous. Terry Pratchett, literally books for teens, comes across as Dante in comparison to both, both from a mastery of prose as well as comedic chops. LOTR might as well be the Holy Writ or Homer in comparison. >ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Bodied some freaks>You gave those illiterate losers what for, their shrimp dicks disappearing into their bodies. >What’s this? Your hecking catterino has evolved into a 12 story tall KitchenAid and is blending all the retarded gobbos into a dough. >I guess that’s where Dinniman got all his green dough. Ha ha! There, I just gave you some more of his fantastic writing for free. No need to thank me.
>>25413861>>25413888jeet>>25413919Yes, take a course on fucking aesthetics and art.
>>25413965DCC isn't isekai.
>>25413859fucking kek this guy looks exactly like you'd expect given the subject matter
>>25412870All those money for interior design and he can't get himself some Ozempic and a gym membership. Talk about priorities.
>>25413993I do thank you. I will now never investigate it.
>>25414115>DCC isn't isekai.Nor did I say it was, they fill a similar niche of being for idiots.
>>25413434millennials still aren't in charge today and they're all pushing 40, so what makes you think genxers were in charge right out of college, when they were younger than millennials are today.
>>25413919>is there really objective value to art though? Yes and if you don’t know that you shouldn’t be on a literature board, take some basic aesthetics lessons.>doesn't that defeat the purpose and turn it into manufacturing or something you can automate with machines? The value is complex and not a set single type of quality that can be mass produced. You can mass produce a functional story framework, that’s what these books do, in fact it’s what most genre-fiction does, it’s also what industries like Hollywood do.>if it was slop wouldn't it be unpopular and we'd never be discussing it?Appealing to popularity in your defense just shows that you don’t even believe in what you’re saying. Its accessibility and appeal to people win extremely rotted aesthetic principles (taste) or the lack of will to try for something better is what makes it slop, slop if pacifying and occupied space in the body or the mind. Might as well argue that McDonald’s has as much culinary value as haute cuisine or that funko pops hold up to Ironically, I actually do think that books like DCC, Sanderson’s fantasy books, and something like RP1 have aesthetic value in their outright inversion of aesthetics, creating a kind of negative space beauty from a complete failure to meet them and instead fixating on trash (RP1 does this the best imo). This is the same principle by which film fans will say “a bad movie is better than a mediocre one” (not often true but true often enough). I anctually don’t think you could mass produce slop like this (DCC or RP1, Sanderson’s absolutely could be written by ai) it’s too idiosyncratically clueless. Unfortunately for the authors, it isn’t intentional and they still suck.
>>25414510i don't understand anything you wrote, but you sound unhappy.
>>25414514ywnbaw
>>25414514Doesn’t that just reflect exactly the type of person that you are?Of course you don’t understand it, for the same reason that you don’t understand why we shit on bad genre fiction. The sad part is that you cannot recognise that the “snobs” here are trying to do you a favour by encouraging you to take art a bit more seriously as more than pacifying entertainment. Ironically, people who don’t won’t or can’t engage with real art and instead fixate on slop are generally much less happy. We live in a time where fewer people enjoy works of great aesthetic beauty because they are too difficult for them and simultaneously a time when much of the population is deeply unhappy, surely there’s absolutely no connection there.
>>25414415But why would you compare this to isekai in any way shape or form?
>>25414711it's basically an isekai. the entire world is destroyed and replaced with a completely new one that has no relation to the old one at all, except that some people from the old one are in the new one. all this guy's stories are isekaishit but with VR instead of soul transfers or whatever. he just took the step from VR to "it's technology indistinguishable from magic I ain't gotta explain shit". the similarities are very obvious.
>>25412611Fair and appreciated, I'm only up to 6.>>25412550Agreed. Carl's a paragon of the indomitable human spirit and the chaotic mess that entails.>>25412632Thankfully it's only being streamed on peacock, Universal owns the rights. They'll need those deep pockets for the shit ton of CGI it's going to take for the show to not suck.
>>25412681>extremely nihilisticI need you to elaborate on this because I get the exact opposite from it. It's one case after another about the bad the universe is capable of and how it forces the good to come together to preserve.
>>25412691It is not that bad and there's less and less of that as the series go on.>>25412705Likewise, when I first got into it I had hardcore nostalgia for classic wow... Or maplestory before it was ruined.>>25412870This isn't OP, but still managed to be a huge faggot that doesn't get the point of the book. It actually takes a huge shit on consumerism.>>25413827>this guy is just some chadLMAO Matt Dinniman... A chad? Wtf? He's a chubby little hobbit and from what he's shown, has been for the entirety of his existence.>>25413861Yeah, same vibes as all the bitter goodreads reviews.
>>25413993>Reeks of butthurt>>25414841>"it's technology indistinguishable from magic I ain't gotta explain shit"There's a lot more to it and the books go into a lot of depth explaining it. This was my first thread on this board and it's disappointing how the majority of you obviously haven't read any of it and are just snobs parroting reviews. I guess this board is no different from any other. Mostly larpers using this site as a crutch to hold up a shallow delusion of superiority.

>>25414924>There's a lot more to it and the books go into a lot of depth explaining it.what are you fucking talking about? all he does is explain that some people made this magic technology in the past. that doesn't even respond to what I claimed>>25414938yeah? how much does he interact with earth as it existed before THE SYSTEM? how often does understanding our world right now help him in any way, beyond basic physics the same as in every isekai out there? how often have you used SYSTEM magic in your real life as it exists right now? oh, that's right, fucking ZERO times. there's zero overlap between the two, beyond the same that you have in every isekai out there.
>>25414966It's slop, I would obviously like it to be catered exactly to my tastes because of how cheap it is. Don't blame me for having taste, the reason you lot praise it and talk against people who don't is exactly the kind of faggot bs that turned me off from the fic, I was reading it when it barely had one book on royal road but genuinely couldn't stand the dogshit cat and the recurring whore as a plot point anymore, dropped it after the the gal who can mould her flesh was introduced. >>25414990>Nah, it's deeper than that but they don't really start getting into until book 6no, it isn't. the explanation is "someone made this magical technology long ago". that's it. it's not explained how any of it is possible, at all. it's literally just magic.>A lot, though most is through flashbacks & references.so, "never", in other words>A fucking shit ton, jfc, why even bother when you don't know shitso, "never", in other words>Again, horrendously fucking wrong. >>25415056You should have went harder with this. Had the potential to be some great pasta. Read this and it was giving the same vibe as that long as pasta about a dude claiming to be a navy seal or some shit. Y'all know what I mean.
I had fun listening to the audiobook for a few hours but then it just felt like more of the same, repetitive humor so I stopped maybe a third into the first book. I told a friend about it when I first started, and a month later he told me he was listening to book 7 lolIt's not my cup of tea because I can only handle so much cynical "haha you will never own a house" humor even if it scratches a particular D&D/crpg itch.
I've read the whole series. I realize having a real conversation about this shit on /lit/ is impossible, but if anyone's actually gonna try reading them, keep in mind the first book doesn't really represent the series well, especially the earlier parts of the first book. The real plot isn't "guy gets sucked into a fantasy world and becomes a hero by stomping goblins to level his stats." It's more like "guy gets sucked into a Running Man gameshow and becomes a terrorist who causes the universe to fall apart." I thought they were fun and had more complexity than you'd guess at first even though I'm fully aware it's not fine literature. Not everything has to be Baudelaire.I'd say books 5 & 7 are the strongest. The most recently was actually pretty bad as far as I was concerned. Felt like a book written by a different author who doesn't get the narrative structure of the original property.
>>25415105A shame cause halfway through the series shit takes a serious fucking turn. Carl is most definitely going to "own a hous" he's going to own the shit out of it. And the humor gives way to much more horror as the tone gets way more serious.
>>25415043>but you wouldn't know, of courseNigga nothing in the book is set in Africa learn to read holy shit.
>>25415128I see. Maybe I'll give it another try.
>>25415129>learn to read holy shit.Ironic, cause yes there is you fucking dumbass. There are many parts throughout the series that take part on the still existing world, contrary to what the dipshit that calls it isekai says.
>>25415129>Learn to read>Can't comprehend off page eventsWhy are you even on this board?
>>25415138You wanna go back and re-read the books my dear anon. Africa isn't mentioned at all other than when they introduced the soldiers Florin's nigress gf came in with.
>>25415137See>>25415126This anons description is also very accurate. Highly encourage giving it a second chance.
>>25415128>Carl is most definitely going to "own a hous" he's going to own the shit out of itI think anon's comment was about the political slant of the humor in the book. It has a very millennial anti-capitalist Occupy Wallstreet type perspective.
>>25415105I couldn't listen to the audiobooks. I know the narrator is very talented but I prefer a straight narration than all the goofy character voices.
>>25415151Yeah, that was basically what I was trying to say. I grew up watching Jon Stewart like every millennial, so I can enjoy some lefty humor, but sometimes it just goes on and on and on. When you ideologically butt heads with the author it gets difficult, especially when you find it insulting. There's a difference between preaching and telling a story.
>>25415151The state of the world and (((their))) complete control over the concept of fiscal currency IS very hilarious.
>>25415147Read the fucking books, retard.
>>25415170Africa is not in the books you triple nigger. I'll give you a hint: it's not the only continent with brown people.
>>25415180Yes something happens in America, too, but it's not nearly as important.

>>25415180Lol yeah the... Kinder Facility? where the kids are. Not Africa but he keeps misremembering the country.
>>25415060>>25415066Not everyone ITT is the same person you absolute retard. You’d have realised that I was not the same guy as the one you’re referring to if you weren’t seething so incredibly hard at people calling you a retard for liking a book for retards. Your samefagging is also now getting ridiculous because you’re posting them one after another with near identical wording.>>25415085>Read this and it was giving the same vibe as that long as pasta about a dude claiming to be a navy seal or some shit. >>25415066that anon is a different one you're just seething at random now and I already said why I don;t like it AFTER reading it so your faggot flailing doesn't even apply
I'm genuinely curious. Is the person defending this crap Matt Dinniman or some sort of shillbot or reddit refugee?
>>25415314It's shills all the way down. Literally nobody reads these books. Every bookstore has piles of them but it's a mystery as to where the sales come from. Ask around and you'll never find a real live person who's read one.
>>25415314>>25415322That’s weird I wonder why they’d bother shilling this crap it doesn’t make se-Oh, that’s why…
>>25415375>Jewish fatherThat doesn't count tho.
It's funny how threads like this get critique meanwhile the women youtuber threads don't get any hate at all.I wonder why that's the case.
>>25415404who cares about women just fap to them and hide the thread, this on the other hand demands me shitting on it because of wasting my time.
>>25412681The Boys(comic) is anti-nihilistic tho?It ends with Hughie winning against Butcher because he refused to become an evil "soldier" for a cause. He remained a "good lad" who had to do horrible things whereas Butcher was a bad person with a good excuse. The ending is literally anti-edge.
>>25415038I couldn't make the past the first book, but your reasoning pisses me off. Not pissed at you, but the fact that this is totally common in book series such as this. Just string them along>you HAVE to buy the next book to see how it goes!Predatory writing, almost mandatory in fantasy slop. I'm not going to buy ten fucking books so I can see what happens as a result of something in another book. This is why I always associate DCC with the stereotypical Nintendo Switch fanboy. >>25415504Except for marked difference in aesthetic quality>>25415548Hahahahah are you seriously acting that this slop for redditors is disliked because it’s transgressive? Is Burger King transgressive because it tastes like shit and only an obese moron would eat it? This was and should be an elitist board you degenerate fucking newfag.I own my own house btw, it’s a nice cottage in the countryside, very comfy.
>>25413827>natural ability to tell a good storyoh lolgive me at least a premise of a single 'good' story from all 8 of his books
>>25415471I read a 100 books a year but most of you don't. Dinnerman isn't even done and shits out 1000 page books at this point so let's say it rounds out the series to 7000 pages. That'd be about 23 actual good books. >>25415476>barely a dent for websloppers, it's like you don't even readThe trouble is I do read, and I have a very realistic understanding of how many books I might read in a lifetime. For most people that number is far lower, some might only reach a couple of years of my reading in their lifetime. There's something much more insidious about people pretending to read shit like this. At least the people bingewatching shows are done in a couple of hours. Videogame retards might be the closest analogy with 100s of hours in some complete time wasting bullshit but at least they're actively engaged and solving some kind of puzzle, be it management or reflexes.Spending tens or hundreds of hours reading crap like this is like an insult to life itself.
>>25414990>Nah, it's deeper than that but they don't really start getting into until book 6So every reader of isekaislop ever says. It never is it's just ad hoc justification for the use of isekai elements to not be as shit as most isekai, which of course is still shit. You like eating shit, that's okay but I don't like smeling your shit breath as you try to explain how good the shit you eat tastes.Because it's shit.
>>25415588you don't think the premise is cool? it's hard to come up with a new SF concept. It's a mixture of Wizard of Oz, the video game series Dark Souls/Wizardry, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the anime/manga Gantz. it also uses the hypermodern approach to storytelling of meta-narrative and social critique.to me it works better than something like Infinite Jest, especially because he understood the need for episodic treatment due to modern audiences being distracted, so he has tight pacing and editing. ntr isekai is currently the most popular genre in the world for male and female readers, and this is probably the best example of it in the english language.
>>25414924>There's a lot more to it and the books go into a lot of depth explaining itThere is no depth. I have read all 8th books, and there is nothing there. You're either not well read and have no idea what depth is, using words that you don't understand, or schizo projecting your hallucinations.
>>25415645>new SF conceptlol there is not a single new concept in this slop, what the hell are you talking about? Are you 12 and this is your first book, or what?
>>25412962>the guyvince vaughn???
>>25414924>There's a lot more to it and the books go into a lot of depth explaining it.>says depth>means lore Behold, the mind of the genre-reader. Devoid of aesthetics, theme, subtlety, all he knows is an escape from his wage slave life in fantasies for children, but that doesn’t stop him trying to believe it’s just as good as those pretentious difficult books that the mean anons make fun of him for not reading instead of slop, it’s almost admirable.
>>25415691all new concepts are blended old concepts, is this bait? if so you nee
>>25415645>it's not derivative slop because uh being original is hard and everything is ultimately one of 7 stories I read that in a bookYou people are sat there defending Goosebumps and Peppa Pig in 8 hour video essays saying shit like this.
>>25415699You're delusional if you think there is anything new or well written in this blend of pop culture garbage. The whole premise is also nothing new. Not even an illusion of depth or well written parts in all 8th books. I don't think you have read/watched/played anything you listed as the source of this tiktok slop mixture.
Threads like this should serve as a reminder to people with an actual interest in literature as an art form that elevates the human spirit as to what genrefags are actually like. They have absolutely no comprehension of what art is or why art is. Not only that but they are extremely hostile when you suggest that the ungainly masses of cliche and pop culture that they enjoy are not comparable to something with thematic depth or aesthetic beauty. These people are intellectually and emotionally stunted in a way that is tragic, but we should never humour their behaviour.
>>25413859I tried watching one panel with guys, and he sounded like a horrible unlikeable idiot who will get #metoo in a year or two. The first thing he did was making 'Glorp! Glorp!' noises, to which all of the audience screamed in excitement.
I want to read books but I'm too afraid I might accidentally enjoy one /lit/ won't approve of.
>>25415778>I want to read books but I'm too afraid I might accidentally enjoy one /lit/ won't approve of.Then you have already lost, for example no one actually cares that you read genre fiction, everyone reads and enjoys some kind of trash. The problem in this thread is that some dipshit is trying to defend his chosen junk food as more than it is, acknowledge that you enjoy trash and know it. That's all.
>>25415784>everyone reads and enjoys some kind of trashI have more respect for the "post your shelf" threads when people actually include some of that stuff they're reading. No way everyone on lit exclusively reads Penguin Classics.
>>25415778why do you care? it is your life and your time spent. And many here, including me, did read this series. It is just not very good.
Why is this thread moving so fast?
