What the hell e-reader do I get? There's so many choices
>>25412067I liked the clara bw enough that I bought a colour too. If you can get a pristine 1st gen kindle, sure, otherwise, eh.
>>25412067any kobo will do
>>25412067The biggest one, more big more space more better
Got a Kobo Clara Color. Pretty good. Probably just get any Kobo, enable sideloading mode and install Koreader (disable the annoying kfmon things as well, so the cover doesn't look ugly when you turn it off).
>>25412067Anything but a Kindle, really.
>>25412067The Kobo Clara BW is pretty great
>>25412226Why? Kindle works just fine if you keep it on airplane mode
I’ve been using a Kobo that they don’t make anymore and have been meaning to upgrade. The Kobo is great but I’m thinking of switching to a PocketBook because they have page turn buttons on the front. Also the name is funny
>>25412403Amazon sneaked in an update to mine that ruined the device. Can't rollback either.>keep it on airplane modeOnline look-ups and "send to Kindle" utility. Were they worth risking the update in retrospect? Probably not.
>>25412403>on my second Kindle>been using a Kindle since around 2012>transfer-through-USB the entire timeLol. I don't touch the internet at all.
>>25412443Do you not use calibre?
>>25412464they broke something recently and she updated it probably.
>>25412403There's no way to jailbreak the news firmwares. Without it you're stuck with shitty amazons .kfx format. No pdf, no epub. You'll need to convert everything into kfx, and even when you do that stuff just won't work as it should.
I don't understand why you guys hate the Kindle. I use it almost exclusively for pirated books, plus some slop from Kindle Unlimited, meaning it is constantly connected to the internet. And guess what? Nothing has happened. The only thing I see people freak out about losing is the "send to kindle" feature, and as someone already said, do you retards not own USB cables? The most important feature, regardless of brand, is auto-adjusting backlight. Comfy reading is a must.
>>25412067Just get the newest Kindle Paperwhite with the lowest storageIt's like deciding between Windows vs. Linux. You could drive yourself insane trying to find the exact Linux distro that suits your needs and wants, and spend months customizing it so it's essentially just Windows, and dread every time there's a problem because fixing it, or even researching it, is a nightmare. Or you could get Windows. It's not really a choice.
iPhone is all you need
>>25412487>>25412466There's no need to jailbreak anything. There's a program called calibre that handles all of this automatically. It converts any format into a Kindle-friendly one, it strips DRM if you want, it can take stuff back off the Kindle if you bought something from Amazon and want it DRM-free. You can even permanently copy library books from Libby if you'd like.It works for all Kindles, all firmware, doesn't matter if it's in airplane mode or not. You just need a USB cable.
>>25412517except that with kindle you're gonna have to fuck around with it to get it to work properly, meanwhile a kobo just werks.stupid amazon shill
>>25412067Not an amazon kindle>be me>amazon account connected to kindle because I bought 1 book online>every other book is pirated 100's read and annotated>decide to delete the account>every book's comments wiped from kindle, unrecoverable>lose interest in reading
>>25412487I put a bunch of epubs onto my paperwhite this morning
I've had Kobos since I got my first one in 2010. Bought a Clara BW on sale last month. Never had any issues with them. Just wish they didn't discontinue the midsize model with physical buttons.
>>25412608How did you recover
>>25412067All of them are garbage scams, destined for a landfill. Just buy any secondhand refurbished one to get the compulsive shopping out of your system and buy real books with the money you saved.
Does any other e-reader have Kindle's vocabulary builder feature? Or the ability to install your own dictionaries?
>>25412699I got my Kobo and installed Koreader, it has both of those. For the original Kobo then yes I could installed my own dictionary; but why would one use the original Kobo UI in the first place, it looks like shit. My current setup is Koreader, ZenUI and Bookshelf, in that order. All three at the latest version (ZenUI at 2.4).
>>25412067Just get a second hand kindle and jailbreak it. It takes about half an hour to do (mostly because kindles are slow) and once that's done you don't have to worry about jew bezoz pushing out updates or anything like that because the jailbreak disables OTA updates. Plus you get to use Koreader and read your epubs>but you can read epubs just fine!!! You can, but you'll have to put up with whatever embedded formatting is in your pirated book because the stock kindle OS only has the most rudimentary support for epubs. And while you are at it, just get rid of your windows installation and get a linux distro (fedora will do for 90% of whatever you do on your computer) and stop feeding all of your info to these retarded megacorpos
>>25412067enjoy the typos
All this talk about Kobo e-readers, but what about Pocketbook? How are they compared to Kobo, and which Pocketbook is the best one right now?
>>25412067Is the XTeink any good? It's cheap but it doesn't have backlight.
which e reader is best for not fucking up the pages so that you dont have to calculate the page youre at compared to the real book when talking with people reading real books
I got a Boox Go 7 recently. Liking it so far. It's Android based so you can install whatever apps you want.
>>25412919I like my Pocketbook. Two months of use on a single charge and read three dozen epubs in the process.
>>25413026Which one are you using specifically?
>>25413037Basic Lux 4. No internet use, intermittent backlight use.
>>25412592no you don't, why do people keep saying this? it's literally plug-and-play for literally everything, from piracy to libby to amazon unlimited
Anything that let's you use epubs without converting them. Most pirate books on Anna's archive etc are in epub format. I have a kobo. It just werks.
>>25412670I didn't, I only read chinese cultivation web novels now.
>>25412958this, ive been getting youtube shorts about it a bunch
>>25413068Yeah this confuses me. I haven't jailbreaked my kindle at all and can read any pirated text find. You just send to kindle the file from your PC or phone and it downloads on the Kindle and it just werks
>>25413242>>25413068It violates the Acceptable Use Policy for Amazon devices.SoHave fun when amazon bans your account, blacklists your home address, and bricks your devices.
>>25413258>t. amazon shillYou are not getting promoted for posting this btw.
>>25413258Is Bezos going to inspect my kindle? You know piracy itself isn't very legal either right?
>>25413258no it doesn't.ebooks are built like websites, if you take a .epub or a .mobi extract it like a zipped file you can peek inside at all the HTML and CSS. it's extremely simple.ebook "DRM" is very similar to creating a zip file with a password; the archived file is encrypted, but the files within are unchanged. a book with its DRM removed - a pirated book - is like a zip file without a password. you can tell if a zip has a password, and you can tell if a supplied password is right or wrong, but can you tell if a zip file *should* have had a password but no longer does? nope. you can't even make any assumptions because an enormous amount of zip files don't have passwords, so it's not even suspiciousto restate this another way, Kindle can check if a file has DRM, and it can tell if the DRM is "right" for your device, but it cannot tell if DRM has been removed, because there's no difference between a DRM-free epub and an epub that had DRM stripped from it. there's no identifying information.it may be that one day Amazon will sign a deal with a publisher that says their ebooks are ONLY available via the Kindle store, and maybe they can then work backward and say "ok if we see this book on your device but it's not on your account that means you're a naughty boy"but that's a lot of steps, courts typically don't allow that sort of guilt-by-inference, and watchdog groups would fight it loudly.Amazon would probably be a lot more aggressive if they only sold books, but they're happy so long as they get your cash, whether it's ebooks or the Kindle itself or audiobooks. they don't have a lot of motivation to go after what are essentially paying customers.
I have a kindle pw and kindle scribe, both pretty damn kino. Never bought a single book from amazon and didn't jailbreak either one. just pirate from anna's and email it to the kindle
>>25412067Kobo's ceo published a letter so that we might have new devices by the end of the year so idk if i should buy now.I just want something with buttons.
>>25412094Oh, and buy the side orientated reader it you prefer to hold things that way. It's bigger but it's also fine.>>25413493Sounds like he's going to force out a tablet stylus or something which is disappointing, but that's corporate for you. Making bullet proof devices of excellent function is bad business. Must have more jejaws.
>>25413493the technological advancements will be minor and likely worthless, but the prices will of course go through the roofno point in waiting
>>25413517>>25413509I want to guilt trip my older brother into buying one for me since he's out of town in my birthday so idk which on i should look for then. This thing is compatible with manga readers?I would probably buy that one boox 10 inch reader but its too expensive.
>>25413427What the hell is that book on the left, it's insane
>>25413592I think it might be The Master and Margarita.
>>25413592Sky Saw by Blake Butler
>>25413493Just bring back the libra 2. That's all everyone wants
>>25413197I want to go for XTeink as my first ereader because it's cheap and I want to test out if e-ink is really worth it or just a gimmick. Both Clara be and Kindle pe are $173 new where I live.
>>25413766Same. My worry is that itll simply be so small that reading will always feel longer because it takes more pages to complete a chapter.
>>25413808>it takes more pages to complete a chapterAre you retarded? The word count stays the same.
>>25413922yeah but it feels different
>>25412493>I don't understand why you guys hate the KindleI have a Paperwhite 3 that I bought about ten years ago (in airplane mode since the beginning). It still works like a champ, and I see no reason to upgrade, but having said that: for someone who's buying a new device today, what's the point of picking a Kindle over a Kobo? They are 99% the same device, and the price is about the same, so you might as well pick the one that gives you more control over the OS and has better Calibre integration.
>>25412958>>25413197>>25413766>>25413808I have an xteink x4 and its pretty fucking great. picrel, my x4 next to my kindlei have read 20+ books on it this year, but i keep it for easier reads: easier sff books, detective novels, nothing that requires too much effort to follow.the size I think is good for two reasons:1. it can fit in any pocket, which is already better than a standard size ereader. there is a lot of value in having it in your pocket2. this is highly tenuous, but it mimics the size of a phone, which i believe tricks my monkey brain into thinking i am looking at a phone. i have sat all day reading on it before, actually several times last week i spent literally all of my free time readingthe only cons are the lack of a front light and the stock firmware. the latter is solved via Crosspoint, which fixes pretty much every problem. the former is more difficult, but people on reddit tend to use a reading light that attaches via magsafe.not a perfect product by any means but definitely worth the money. wait for a sale, I think mine was $55usd
Kobo Libra 2, used on ebay - yes or no.
>>25414390Kobo clara bw is smaller than kindle pw
>>25412487This is blatantly wrong. You’re an idiot.
>>25414722anything like this with a backlight?
>>25414878they released the "x4 Pro" literally todayit has a frontlight and a touch screenit is $99 and doesnt have usb-c
>>25414913tempting but>doesnt have usb-cgoddammit. ill make do with my kobo until theres a x4 Pro Plus
>>25414926rationale seems to be that they wanted to keep it thin, and that the touch screen takes some of the width that a non-touch eink display would save. the device is thick enough to fit a usb-cthey provide a POGO to usb-c adapter so there is that. given that i already own a paperwhite and an x4 i cant justify the cost, and also i think not having a touch screen is actually a huge pro for this reader
>>25414913>doesnt have usb-cHow does it charge?
>>25412403They pushed an update thst ruined devices and then also deleted items out of people's libraries.
>>25415046POGO pin connector on the back of the devicethey used the same connector on the x3, the second iteration of their readeri hold that the x4 was their best product
>>25414730Ye
>>25415090Then how do you transfer files without usb?
>>25415395stock firmware has a phone appcustom firmware (Crosspoint, and if it is compatible) has a similar method to either connect to calibre over wifi or create a hotspot with the reader and transfer from a phone
>>25415401alright i might just buy it. nta btw
is this legit? https://alishort.com/3DYHS
>>25415453>https://alishort.com/3DYHSthe cases are $15, the actual readers are $55buying from aliexpress can work out but if stock is low they will cancel the order without telling youalso you may need to flash the chinese firmware before you can do anything else. look this up on reddit r/xteinkreader
>>25415458At $55 they're a scam at that screen size. Much better to get a used 6'' for 50.>>25412487It's Calibre that can convert .epubs into .kfx. It works, but it's not perfect. It's not an easy process for PDF's and other fixed page documents though. You will lose ability to search the text and type in annotations. You could send pdfs via Amazons app, that way searching will be available, but this will butcher image quality in case of high quality documents and comics. If you somehow find 5.10.3 Kindle, go for it, Jailbrake it and install Koreader, if not stay far away. They are closing the format, and actively pushing firmwares that discourage sideloading. It's only a matter of time until they start going for Calibre.https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comments/1umjym5/kindle_paperwhite_does_not_open_sideloaded_books/https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351285&page=232
>>25415502>>25415458Idk what price you guys are seeing that aliexpress link says $30 for me
Kobo or Pocketbook, anons? Which one is better and have better usability? I heard Pocketbook has more good functions, but Kobo is faster and longer battery life.Which one?
>>25415453>>25415532The cases are that price, you have to click over to the "Black 16G" and "White 16G" for the actual device.
>>25415537I swear by my Pocketbook. Month + and dozens of books read on a single charge, SD card slot, frontlight, works great.
>>25415632https://alishort.com/7v7Awthis is the best price I could find anywhere
>>25415635Which pocketbook is best to get?
>>25415687I used an Ereader comparison website. Verse and Basic Lux 4 are nearly identical, but the Basic Lux 4 is cheaper and has slightly better stats. I think the newer, more expensive models do the waterproof meme and lose SD card slots?
>want an x4>$55>anything above $50 gets a 60% tax in brazilFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
