Spanish has two words for "to be". One is used for permanent states, the other for temporary states, or in philosophical terms, one is used for essence and the other for accident. The one for permanent state, essence, comes from the Latin word for sitting. The one for temporary state, accident, comes from the Latin word for standing.Essence is the defining, fundamental nature of a thing—the core properties without which it loses its identity. Accident, in contrast, refers to contingent attributes or traits that modify a substance without affecting its fundamental identity; an entity can gain or lose accidents without ceasing to exist.
