There’s the characters themselves (ie the drunken cook, the thrice married wife, the saintly knight, the antisemitic small minded prioress etc) and then there’s the story that follows that related something to their nature and personality. It’s not Chaucer’s commentary on societal role of women necessarily but commentary on certain personality types.
