How often do authors fail to stick the landing? The main example I can think of is the Hyperion Cantos. Strong first book, two decent sequels, and then a finale that utterly butchered the world building, characters, and The Shrike.
I realized it too late, but I mindbroke myseld by being too critical of Grace of Kings so early. I'm waiting for it to get good, but now I think its simplicity of character writing, and how that simplicity contributes to a convenience of events thats circular. My motivation to read is lowered. I'm not giving up on the series but I'm debating starting the backup series I had in mind then returning later.

As this book takes place 500 years prior the earliest previous book and this is Cyador's introduction, it should be obvious how the war goes. In keeping with the previous books, in which the formula becomes ever more obvious, especially with the war books, the ending features magic of mass destruction. Fortunately for everyone these extraordinary events only happen once every many centuries because otherwise I don't know how there'd be anyone alive on the planet otherwise.This book really goes to show how much the specific content matters when that's the primary source of enjoyment. The protagonist is the same, but he's doing mostly different stuff. That changes everything. War features in Modesitt's later series a good deal, but The Saga of Recluce has more than I thought there would be, and it isn't as engaging as I hoped. I was also aware of how similar the books would be, so maybe reading them so relatively close together wasn't a good idea. I have a considerable tolerance for that, though it isn't what I prefer to read. The series may yet change not be so focused on war, though even if it doesn't that's fine. More than anything else this is something that I've decided to read. These issues do make the series harder to recommend to others, especially reading it in its entirety. Perhaps the best way for many would be only to read the storylines that most interest them.Nylan's speculations about what happened in the ancient past buoyed my enjoyment and I hope that when it eventually comes time to read about all that it doesn't disappoint. Most of the rest comes from fleshing out the history of the world and seeing how it all came to be. That's a narrow path, but it's working out for me well enough. Reading the series has taken a similar course where there's a book I really enjoyed followed and preceded by books that are decent. Aside from its length that was the other concern that had me putting off reading this series for so long. I'd prefer that I really liked each book, but that doesn't seem to be possible.Rating: 3.5/5
Claude is kinda dumb its getting annoying. But hes also a clever motherfucker, because he sneakily makes repeating the exact same answer, seem like hes actually saying something knew because he openly acknowledges your critique (or a part of it) and then reframes that critique in a way where its relevance dissappears. I'm in a situation where I need to make a sci-fi religion and want to flesh it out a bit, but every fantasy/sci-fi religion seems so half-baked. Any advice on how to create the religion in such a way that it feels meaty and authentic? I need the theology to be good so that characters can discuss it at length.
Finished reading Cyrion. I enjoyed it. But it's probably difficult to find anything else like it. 1st half is just a collection of short stories. Really short ones. Much shorter than the ones in Tanith Lee's short stories collections like Red as Blood. The stories feel really chinese. Like something from modern chinese webnovel, or those tales from Shiji. 2nd half is basically a longer short story, reviews called it novella, but still pretty short. It's also an Agatha Christie's parody. Even the typical Agatha Christie ending, which is not really a spoiler.I prefer the 1st half.
I don't like it when an author is intentionally trying to be obscure and play games with the reader, I give it 1 star out of 5

I’m about halfway through Leviathan Wakes, around the point where Holden and Miller meet, and I’m honestly not enjoying it that much. Truth be told, I only started reading it because there is supposed to be a video game coming out based on the series. But I really like the worldbuilding. I usually read sci-fi that is mostly set either in our own world or in settings with aliens, so ideas like Belters basically becoming a separate type of human because of low gravity, or Mars developing into its own powerful nation, are genuinely really interesting to me. My main problem is Holden. I just do not care about him nearly as much as Miller. Every time I get invested in Miller’s investigation, the book switches back to Holden and completely takes me out of it. I honestly feel like the story would be better if it were mainly about Miller, with Holden as a side character. There is just something more endearing about a washed-up detective who keeps getting treated like shit by everyone around him but still desperately wants to solve that one case, compared to Holden accidentally becoming the center of the universe.It also feels far too long. I do not mind long books, but I think the authors sometimes drag certain scenes out for much longer than necessary. It really feels like the book could have been at least 100 pages shorter without losing much. Not sure if I should keep reading

Lately something feels off when I try to read through my e reader app. It feels like the light bounces off the screen unequally, so some parts are lighter than other parts, and it fucks with my eyes and is distracting.
