The play is notable for its use of what Freud calls neuroses and defense mechanisms - 1:51:45 time mark in this link- Anatol asks the hypnotist to hypnotize his wife and make her discuss her infidelities but then he doesn’t follow through with it. He pretends he really doesn’t care as a defense mechanism against being hurt as Signund Freud interpreted this scene.>> The first act, Die Frage an das Schicksal ("The question to fate"), earned Schnitzler the title of Psychologischer Tiefenforscher ("psychological depth researcher") from Sigmund Freud.[1]In Hollywood fashion this scene is portrayed more as a “coming to his senses and quitting his neurotic nature” apotheosis though Freud would see it as a mechanical defense of cuckoldry.
