Imagine being an anglophone and hearing that Spanish has two words for "to be", one used for what philosophy calls essence, the other for what philosophy calls accident, and then instead of finding this interesting and wanting to learn more about it, you refuse to learn more about it out of pride. It's almost as if pride and curiosity are mutually exclusive. The Bible says pride is a sin. Anglophones are godless and destined for hell. Utilitarianism/pragmatism and culture are mutually exclusive. Anglophones are utilitarians/pragmatists, aka uncultured.

English is the single greatest language for prose writing and only loses in one single department perhaps to Chinese and Japanese for the fun that can be played using pinyin/kanji

>>25426588I knew a bit of French from a young age (Swiss) but went all in using French for weeb stuff as a teenager (yes, I really can't learn Japanese), and later for translations in general. Censorship was part of it (the trannylators were not as bad as today but censorship already happened), although secondary relative to writign quality. I only read in English for works originally in the language. It's funny how bad translations into English are in comparison to French or even German. No one not an EOP and speaking a non-caveman language should ever read translations in English, which makes it more puzzling that good portion of /lit/ is asking about the "best" (least bad) translation of particular works.
