How do you come up with creature names? I’m writing a scene with a placeholder of “jelly finned alligator” but that just sounds retarted and not fantasy.

>>25422417don't get too invested with naming creatures properly, most readers just want the protagonist to kill something and have them struggle for a bit while they're at it.take it from me, familiarity is more important because readers wont expend that energy to imagine a new creature and instead associate it with something that already exists. Croc-O-War if you really want that jellyfish motif you're going forjust add some interesting loot to make them a little bit more invested, otherwise a unique creature feature is ignored.TLDR: KISS or keep it simple, stupid.
Started the third volume of The Mimosa Confessions, but the mc seems to be getting more insufferable with each volume. Makes me wonder if I should drop the series. Can anyone tell whether it gets any better later?

I recently read my first light novel series, Ascendance of a Bookworm, and while it was a bit of a guilty pleasure because of the prose, the rest of it made it up for it.I'm trying the first volume of Tearmoon Empire now and the prose quality is actually a little better than Bookworm but I find the worldbuilding rudimentary and it's immersion breaking. The setting is basically a pastiche of Louis XVI's France based on the pop-history mythology of the French Revolution which feels hollow.At this point I probably would rather read Western fantasy novels instead because the editorial standards are higher. But maybe some light novels are superior versions of their anime adaptations? The reason I read Bookworm in the first place was because I wanted to see what happened beyond the anime and what the anime cut. So maybe things like Re:Zero, Makeine, Apothecary Diaries, and Mushoku Tensei are worth checking out?

They are so bland and uneventful.My problem with japanese fantasy (light) novels is the good novels are not translated, or translated badly. So many of them are also part of an incomplete series, and like asoiaf will probably never be finished.But I think you’re expecting too much from western fantasy books. They are slop, with very few exceptions.
>>25428318Recently published YA and Romantasy slop are probably terrible but generally Western fantasy has higher editorial standards than Japanese LN slop. They also tend to have actual coherent worldbuilding rather than the generic isekai trappings like an adventurer's guild, RPG class system, etc...As for Bookworm, despite being an isekai the worldbuilding of how noble society works is pretty cool and it also has a nice approach to technological progress
