Just finished reading this kino for the first time. I know it's not exactly an underrated hidden gem, but everything kind of clicked into place for me about halfway through Brawne's story and I was absolutely floored when I realized what Simmons was going for.

I'm definitely going to pick up Fall of Hyperion, but I understand the last two books are a let down. Am I good to stop after Fall, or are there unresolved plot threads where I need to see the series through to its end?
>>
>>25422119
A shame HBO canceled "Raised By Wolves."
>>
>>25422624
From what I understand the first two books were written together which is why the ending of book one is a cliffhanger. He wrote the Endymion books after the success of the first books. Yes, they are disappointing and the last book is full of bad retcons. FoH is a solid ending.

Finished the First Law trilogy and despite being really unsatisfied with the ending I can't stop thinking about it. I also found it really interesting how I spent the entirety of the last book coming up with excuses or trying to justify Logen's behavior until the end where I realized he's just kind of a piece of shit.
Also I don't know why all the fanart of Logen makes him look like a fairly normal looking barbarian archetype when the book describes him as abjectly hideous.
>>
>>25423065
>excuses or trying to justify Logen's behavior until the end where I realized he's just kind of a piece of shit.
red flag of shit writing if you cant at the very least give your villain a coherent motive even if your goal is to make him simply evil

He's the protagonist.
>>
>>25423100
Logen isn't a villain, he's a piece of shit. Big difference. He's like a drunk that turns into a complete fucking asshole when he's on the bottle, but is surprisingly self-aware and even incredibly ashamed about his actions when he's off of it. Maybe one day he'll get the bear off his back?

But no, he won't, because he likes how he feels to drink. He'd rather live with the shame and consequences than lose the drink.
>>
>>25423148
>But no, he won't, because he likes how he feels to drink. He'd rather live with the shame and consequences than lose the drink.
Typical anti-hero characteristic desu. I've always hated how obsessed media is with the alcoholic that can't live without it trope. Feels like it abstracts suffering into the alcohol itself to the point where it's no longer real, or atleast not given the proper attention to be in favour for wallowing over how alcoholic the character is.
>>
>>25423152
My dad is a disgusting drunk that ruined my childhood and Logen rang pretty true.

You're right it's a very typical deconstruction, but to be fair The Blade Itself came out 20 years ago and that type of subversion was less overdone in 2006.

Just finished this book. Pretty good. It actually managed to surprise me by the end. I thought it was going to be a retarded ending. But then it swerved, then swerved again, and before I had time to figure out where it was headed, it delivered a shocking conclusion. And the best part: it made total sense.

I would recommend against getting the audiobook. The narrator wasn't a good fit for it, and almost ruined the book for me. She was trying too hard to sound young and innocent, and it just came across as poor anime voice acting. Especially when she voiced young boys. They all sounded super dorky and cheesy. I powered through her poor narration and enjoyed the story regardless. So I'd recommend getting the text instead.
>>
>>25422624
I couldn't finish the last two books. Endymion was so bad, I dropped it. I'd say don't even bother picking it up. Consider Fall of Hyperion the end. It ties up everything fine.

Never read Dandelion Dynasty. But just looking at the summary on goodreads, it sounds like it has similar elements. What with two boys growing up to be on opposing sides, politically. Though The Poet Empress is told from the perspective of a young woman, vying to become a concubine for a prince.(I forgot her exact age. Somewhere between 16 and 20 I suppose) Being a poor farm girl, she's mostly ignorant of the courts, and has to learn, while avoiding deadly plots. What we know of the two boys are stories told to her. So while the story is largely about them, it's still her story.

There isn't much adventure here, and only like 2 battles. It's mostly just plots, talking, and some low scale dangerous encounters.

That it is most certainly not. Rest assured. There were a couple of romantasy scares in the second half of the book. I don't want to say what they were, because it would reveal too much about the story. But as it turns out, I was fretting over nothing. It didn't go that way at all.

Plebs be talking about The Martian and Project Hail Mary because they got turned into movies, but real niggas know Artemis is where it's at.

Jazz Bashara is waifu material, a total Manic Pixie Dream Girl, but she is not some feminist girlboss; every time she encounters a fight, she runs away. And she is not some lesbian, either; she likes men, and has had a lot of boyfriends.

The science is great (think Arthur C. Clarke), the politics are great (think Robert A. Heinlein), and the action is great (think Michael Crichton). I recommend it unreservedly.

Just finished this, it's the direct sequel to 2001. What a great read, expands upon the first story and is a super interesting look at the future of humanity and our role in the universe. It reminds me of Childhood's End in some ways.
The only reason I'm posting is because I have two gripes. One, Clarke simply can't stop sucking off Kubrick at every opportunity in the foreword and acknowledgment of both books. Two, he RETCONNED HIS OWN STORY. When he wrote 2010 (a direct sequel) he changed the events to match the 2001 film and not the novel. Who does that? Retard.
Great stories either way. I'll get around to the other two one day.

Recently I found out that there are 4 more books called the Empire of the Sun or something. Same protagonists, same universe.

I know it's shocking, but the novel is way better than the movie. HAL goes from switch-flip evil AI to a more nuanced degradation, and the story actually gives context as to why. It also has a much more satisfying beginning and ending, with the ape-men getting 3 or 4 chapters to themselves and a lot more explanation about what the obelisk does, and the ending goes from lolwut 2deep4u to a (relatively) sophisticated look about how people and intelligence fits in the universe.
>>
>>25424645
It's still accurate in many ways. We have
>mistborn era 3 trilogy
>mistborn era 4 trilogy series finale (these will be Stormlight-length books btw)
>Elantris 2 and 3
>warbreaker 2
>back half stormlight
>dragonsteel (was going to be 10 books but he scaled it down to a trilogy supposedly)

20 books right there alone at a rough estimate.

House of Chains, Book 2 Chapter 10
>From the stone statue of Bairoth emerged a distant, weary voice. 'Lead us, Warleader.'

>Karsa flinched. Do I dream this? Then he straightened. 'I have drawn your spirits to this place. Did you travel in the wake of the Seven?'

>'We have walked the empty lands,' Bairoth Gild replied. 'Empty, yet we were not alone. Strangers await us all, Karsa Orlong. This is the truth they would hide from you. We are summoned. We are here.'

>'None,' came Delum Thord's voice from the other statue, 'can defeat you on this journey. You lead the enemy in circles, you defy every prediction, and so deliver the edge of your will. We sought to follow, but could not.'

>'Who, Warleader,' Bairoth asked, his voice bolder, 'is our enemy, now?'

>Karsa drew himself up before the two Uryd warriors. 'Witness my answer, my friends. Witness

>Delum spoke, 'We failed you, Karsa Orlong. Yet you invite us to walk with you once again.'

>Karsa fought back an urge to scream, to unleash a warcry – as if such a challenge might force back the approaching darkness. He could make no sense of his own impulses, the torrential emotions threatening to engulf him. He stared at the carved likeness of his tall friend, the awareness in those unmarred features – Delum Thord before the Forkassal – the Forkrul Assail named Calm – had, on a mountain trail on a distant continent, so casually destroyed him.

>Bairoth Gild spoke. 'We failed you. Do you now ask that we walk with you?'

>'Delum Thord. Bairoth Gild.' Karsa's voice was hoarse. 'It is I who failed you. I would be your warleader once more, if you would so permit me.'

>A long moment of silence, then Bairoth replied, 'At last, something to look forward to.'

>Karsa almost fell to his knees, then. Grief, finally unleashed. At an end, his time of solitude. His penance was done. The journey to begin again. Dear Urugal, you shall witness. Oh, how you shall witness.

I'm glad another anon has taken up the torch. You should post your GR or talk about your favorite lesser-known stories.

I would've read Marrow by now, Marrow-shill anon. I generally respect the efforts of selfless shills here. But when I looked it up it looked really really bland and derivative and boring from every angle, and I can't bring myself to even try it.
>>
>>25425637
But why is it bland to you, anon?
To be fair, the expanded 'universe' may be more interesting -- a Jovian-sized spaceship circumnavigating the galaxy like a cruise vessel, taking in fucktons of different alien species, with their own (sometimes world-sized) habitats. The short stories and potential of the 'verse is interesting.
I drifted off Marrow my first time but came back years later and liked it. Then I read the sequel which became one of my favorite novels ever. And my autistic ass got drawn into the depth and scope of the 'verse. There is a lot of real cool shit if you get invested. I stop rambling now.

The Fist of Memory is an action-thriller that emphasizes the complementary nature of science and spirituality. As with most of Talabi's work this is set in Nigeria, distinctively so through his word choice and references. This had me looking up a lot of nouns to see what their cultural context and significance was. Doing so isn't necessary, though I find it interesting to know more. The year is 2050 and Nigeria is far more developed but its political crises remain. Many of the characters have an augmented intelligence implant that is trained on their neural output to provide personalized assistance. There are several other technological advances that I found to be both reasonable and integrated well into daily life. The spiritual matters aren't about organized religion so much as accepting that there's more to existence than material reality and more to knowledge than science.

There are five perspectives. Two women, two men, and the alien entity. Two are killers, one is a scientist, one is a personal assistant, and again an alien entity. Three are Nigerians, one is South African, and the other is most recently from over 200 light years away. Four are in 3rd person and one is in 1st person perspective.

This book is primarily action-oriented. Gun fights, fist fights, car chases, and explosions. There's a lot of violence and drama between the four human viewpoints. In the last quarter melodrama and metaphysics take over. The entity only has a brief role at the end, but that's all it needs, and it's the culmination of the book's theme.

If it weren't for how the ending entirely changes the context of everything that came before I would rate this 5 stars. I can deal with the narrative telling me that all the parts that I thought were cool, fun, and stylish were actually pitiable, wretched, and self-destructive. I can respect, or at least tolerate, perspectives that go against mine. However, there are a few ideas that I feel an irrational amount of disappointment towards and the central theme of the novel is revealed to be one of them.

This is a predictable book with obvious consequences. I believe that doing so was intentional. We choose the actions of our lives with predictable consequence and blind or delude ourselves into not seeing their inevitable outcome. The irony was that I was the same as the characters. The text told me several times how the book would end. But, I ignored that and thought "This surface level spectacle sure is cool, fun, and stylish!" Then the end came and I could deny no longer. I want to emphasize this is a personal problem and that it's made me an outlier with other books that have done similarly and are both popular and greatly enjoyed. To say what it is would do more than spoil the plot. I feel that it would undermine the experience of the emotional journey that reading this book is.

I'll consider requesting upcoming books for those interested in wanting to know about them. I probably won't do it because there's so much else to read, but I'll definitely consider it. Maybe I'll even be able to get Red God months before its release. Not that it probably matters all that much considering other big titles I've posted about here in advance. It's a fun thing to do from time to time though.

It is, but Golden Son is significantly better, Morning Star is a slight step sideways, Iron Gold is a single jump in the air, Dark Age is a half-step bsckwards then a two full leg lengths forwards, and then Lightbringer is a single step forward. It remains to be seen whether Red God steps forward or turns 360° and walks away.

This isn't a series for deep inteospection, it's a power fantasy series where deep pain for the character is followed by FAFO action sequences in a series of ups and downs that slowly ramps from limited playground roughhousing to full on interplanetary war. All books in the series are judged on that criteria, which is why IG and DA are generally considered worse. Pierce does a better job of giving us more 3 dimensional characters but falls for the trap of trying to provide deeper meaning throughout IG. DA then has to spend half the book trying to fix those issues, which never really go away fully, even in LB. But in general, it has stayed true to form as action combat space opera power fantasy wish fulfillment with the central backdrop of extreme and beneficial eugenics.
>>
>>25425749
The point you're making isn't very clear to me.

The incest in GoT is not depicted positively. It's a scandalous thing, done by bad characters, and it's the inciting incident for the entire book. It's also just one scene of many.

Jesus whats so bad about trying to inject deeper meaning in your characters, how bad do you have to be at thematic exploration and character writing for people to think any attempt at that needs to be fixed in the next book
>>
>>25425653
Most of Jack Vance's works are like that.
>>
>>25422119
I I've been trying to finish *Toll the Hounds* for three months. Please help
>>
>>25427177
The attempt was poorly done, which is why he rightfully then had to fix it. Nothing is wrong with deep meaning in scifi, but the genre doesn't lend itself to that in the way that standard adult fiction does. There's too much other bullshit going on for it to be truly impactful. In IG, Pierce immediately introduces competing political factions in his 10-year tike skip post-MS world. In the previous trilogy that spent almost 0 time discussing the economic structure of the world, suddenly we're supposed to care about the nuances of Dancer's space congress, except of course its bleak and a poor mirror of modern politics.

And of course it gives ample opportunity for the Core to go, see, it was a mistake, and then we're launched into the next four books. This is generally a mistake. Red Rising is at its best when vendettas are personal, when Darrow is hunting the people who ruined his life and bringing together a misfit crew of oddballs and rejects to get it done. Red Rising does not perform well in high-brow space opera where hate is institutional and the war machine ignites because of ideological reasons, of which we srill barely know anything even with the introduction of Quicksilver and Ephraim. Ephraim, who later had to die to amend the mistake of introducing war economy logistics woes into a series about raining tubes of iron down on a planet filled with space marines it takes decades to train. So, yea.

We wanted more of the anger and violence that was Darrow plotting to fuck up Augustus' and Octavia's world. What we got was Darrow doing the in-universe version of a desk job. Depth isn't a sin unless you introduce it in book 4.
>>
>>25427122
Red Rising is fun as mindless entertainment, but you could also view it as satire. I mean Darrow is directly responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths but he's viewed as the hero because of his ideology and how most readers become biased towards his perspective.
The series is basically, "what if Mao Zedong was a superhuman gigachad in space along with being a brilliant strategist".
Unfortunately the author cucked out and made Darrow some liberal democratic dweeb after the time skip. Lysander is the only fun character out of the POVs.
>>
>>25427221
Well that just sounds like he cant do political themes well. I've always thought that from the first book and how the Gold ideology makes zero sense when you think about a historical timeline.
>>
>>25425653
Try the Durdane series next.

>>25427014
I bought Lightbringer 2 years ago but couldn't bring myself to re-read the whole thing because I've forgotten most of the characters.
Might just as well drop it altogether, it's not bad but not great either.
>>
>>25427232
To some extent I agree. I don't hate some of the other POVs. Lyria sucks and her entire storyline is pointless. Virginia can be fun but the return of the Jackal was genuinely retarded. Darrow needs to die. I think Lysander is certainly the most interesting, though I think the ramp up to his decision to commit biowarfare is somewhat sudden.
>>25427237
That would generally be a correct interpretation. True political drama is one of the hardest things to get right, because it's so susceptible to constant injection of your prior-held beliefs to a point where the reader is being hit over the head with your point. It's why so many who attempt create half-baked poorly thought out versions that read like intro to poli sci 101. He has moved away from this, in his defense. We're generally back on track with stupid plans, extreme viilence, personal ambition and hate, and eugenics programs that would make Adolf Eichman raise an eyebrow.
>>
>>25427262
I think what the author was going for was the psyche/parasite and the Eidmi being diametrically opposed super weapons, with the psyche coming out on top.
Basically Lysander would use the Blue Eidmi to kill nearly all of the Republic and Rim Blues, rendering their fleets and complex war machines near helpless. The psyche, with the ability to control the fleets and machines remotely without need for the Blues, would counteract it and result in Lysander's defeat. Pax would be the recipient of the technology because of his Blue training.
Unfortunately the author cucked out again and Lyria's storyline was rendered completely useless.
>>
>>25427276
Which would have been an interesting climax to the larger theme of man and technology as weapons of war, both separate and intertwined. I blame Darrow as a character. Without Darrow, RR is meaningless, yet if Darrow does not die, RR will be meaningless. We're just chugging along at this point. If Eidme and psyche were to become the focal point of this series, Darrow goes to wayside, which would have been fine if IG and DA weren't basically dedicated to Darrow's ever expanding personal control of the entire solar system. Brown is forced to include him in any major event, which meant that Lyria by necessity had to become completely useless.
>>
>>25427295
Yeah the series would have been better if Darrow and Sevro both died in Dark Age, leaving the Republic flailing with it's survival uncertain. Would have killed book sales but made for a better story.

Instead it's now another Marvel tier capeshit story with Darrow becoming Odysseus along with some sort of Taoist warrior monk. Very strange.
>>
>>25427307
Probably. Maybe even IG. I think if he truly wanted to introduce political or even just ideological complexity, he needed to start the book with anything but Darrow sitting on Mars attending Congress sessions with Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and the Ghost of Christmas Past. If you've created a republic why not do the republic thing and delegate responsibility? Nope, Darrow needs a reason to personally go fight the inner rim, and so now there's a terrorist attack and all those factions we just met will dissolve into nothing.

I'm just ranting at this point. Despite all this, I am looking forward to Red God. I'm just equally looking forward to the series being over, and maybe Pierce getting to take what he's learned and write a new series.

two things

the first is the most ironic, which is that he announced that his big epic fantasy series was finished before even the first book was published. this was announced in a time when lots of series were being abandoned or taking forever, so he immediately stood out.

the second is that people started saying he had good prose. very few people can recognize good prose. what mostly happens is that wait for another person to say something is good prose and they repeat it. so he became the "it's fantasy but, like, with good writing!!" guy, which is a title we pass around every 5 years or so.

so the two things combined and very quickly he became popular and was ushered into being a new, important face in fantasy

eventually it all collapsed but his impact on marketing is still felt even now

This is the first time I've heard this so it seems strange that there isn't more outrage about it being a blatant lie. People only seem to bring up him welching on the charity chapter.

There was a ton of outrage, it's just cooled over the last 15 years. Like GRRM he hasn't been totally silent, he's continuously revised his plan and given additional excuses for why his initial one fell through.

The charity chapter fiasco was only 4 years ago and was a lot more obviously fucked up.

Stephen Baxter's Raft has been pretty cool with lots of fun ideas. It's one of those SF books where the author must have sat down and thought "I know a tremendous amount about this subject and I need to get it all on paper, plot and characterization and prose be damned", and I have a soft spot for that type of thing

it's a book with a lot to say about gravity. the main conflict is that long ago a spaceship and crew blundered into some portal by mistake and ended up (premise spoilers, not anything major) in an alternate universe where the effect of gravity is much, much stronger. some of the crew survive and are able to eke out an existence of sorts inside a nebula that contains breathable oxygen.

their goal is to escape obviously, but with each subsequent generation more things fail and more knowledge is lost.

I think I see what the solution is going to be to their problem and I'm disappointed in how simple and basic it is, but we'll see if it sticks the landing
>>
>>25428217
Currently reading Vacuum Diagrams by Baxter. Was told this was a good starting point for the Xelee books. Three of the first four stories were the exact same concept and narrative structure cold open in alien POV // cut to humans obliviously interacting with aliens // cut back and forth until humans realize that the very alien aliens exist // humans solve plot tension while worrying over bureaucratic issues caused by discovering sentient life. I'm assuming or hoping that these were not written or intended to be read consecutively and were grouped together only by some error in editorial judgement. Characters are thinner than Asimov's and the ideas are not worth it so far.
>>
>>25428233
Yeah, I'm worried his schtick will wear thin quickly, because at a certain point I need characters that talk like humans and plotting that isn't so slapdash.

It's a shame you aren't like that one, I hear it's one of his best. I'd like to at least work up to Ring, it has a lot of ideas in it that I like reading about in SF.
>>
>>25428233
>Characters are thinner than Asimov's and the ideas are not worth it so far.
Is Asimov actually good on that? Always got the impression that hes one of those idea guys that can't actually write human beings for some reason
>>
>>25428285
Asimov is the poster child of this. In fact most of the other big name golden age authors were decent character writers, but I suspect that Asimov nearly singlehandedly tanked their reputation on that front. His ideas are good enough to still be worth reading, and I find his writing to have a certain naive and boyish charm. Don't bother with Foundation, but his short stories are required reading.

Basically the city of Illmar was always ruled by noble families, the most ancient of which were double dog hated for their affinity for the arcane, being hedonistic as fuck(relatively) and them marrying literal demon scions and whatever. When they were deposed/killed they cursed their patch of land(The Reproach) which lead to anyone in said lands getting cursed and ending up bodyjacked by the personalities of that family. What this basically means is that they're trapped inside of their own bodies eternally dancing themselves to death to an endless tune in an endless party that in their mind takes place in a very grand palace but in reality is a decrepit shithole. The personalities, being noblemen, end up wearing what's left of their finery even if it doesn't fit the rapidly starving bodies, hence the zombie tophats.
>>
>>25428233
Keep the faith.
Where you end up towards the end is like a cultural or paradigm shift. Great legends about the twilight of the human race. ‘Ring’ is a great companion book but perhaps stop there. Bureaucracy passes by the wayside as the war in heaven accelerates and Bolder’s Ring becomes the focus of all life.

Been reading The Stars my Destination recently. Just over half-way through. I'm not a massive sci-fi fan but I've been reading it as a surreal epic retelling where Gully Foyle takes on the role of different mythic archetypes: first being a Ulysses-like castaway; then the Savage; and in the second half the Fool.

Fair or not, I think there's a belief that everything that can be said about superheroes has already been said before. it's been played straight, subverted, the subversions have been subverted, they've leaned into absurdity, used it as metaphor for capitalism and class division and xenophobia and on and on.

That said, there are a lot of books that are about superheros doing superhero things, they just wear a different coat of paint. The Final Architecture series by Tchaikovsky comes to mind, it's like a mixture of 40K and Guardians of the Galaxy but without the edginess of the former or the Marvel dialogue of the latter.
>>
>>25428233
Vacuum Diagrams does loosely follow a plot where the Ghosts are trying to run an experiment that may fuck up the entire universe. The Xeelee Sequence has a ton of alien species and one of its human's significant plot points is eventual conquering of the Milky Way, including assimilation or genocide of all non-Xeelee species.

Also book 2 doesn't have any of the same characters except yasnic and God. He gets conscripted into the army as a magic healer in a big war.

I've been trying to start out my fantasy journey, but my interests have been all over the place, and I don't know where to begin.
I've looked into everything from Conan to Elric to classic literature of Arthurian legends to more modern works.
Any recommendations?
I am personally a sucker for a story centred around an Evil Overlord and his minions. Anything like that?

Lord of the Rings
>>

I've been specifically avoiding that one. I fear the prose will make my mushy brain get lost. I fucking remember losing the thread with the fucking Hobbit. Although that was most likely me forcing myself to read while being sleepy.
I wanted something more entry-level.
>>

It's more that I kept falling asleep and wasn't consistent enough with the reading/have the memory of a goldfish, so I kept forgetting what the fuck was going on.

>>
>>25430596
Good stuff Anon. Still annoyed that my brother lost my Megamorphs #2. I had no idea that Alternamorphs #2 existed.
>>
>>25430600
Vegemorphs is a little parody book that some dude wrote. It came out in 1998 which, I suppose, is when Animorphs was still quite popular. I've read about 25 volumes of Animorphs and a few of her Everworld books (which I also have all of). I do agree that they are SUPER fucked up. Now that I have all of them, I'm really looking forward to going through the whole series.
>>
>>25430608
i only own the physical copies of all of Everworld but yes, it's all fucked up.
vegemorphs was officially published?
ill look into it
>>
>>25430607
Megamorphs #2 can be had for a few dollars on Ebay. There are also six cover variants of that, so if you're lucky you can find one with your favorite character or the one with all six main characters inside. Still, sorry to hear that happened.

Plans for next books to read:
Piranesi
Poet Empress
Crown of Stars
Dune till book 4 before the 3rd movie comes out
Maybe First Law before ASOIAF since its shorter and everybody says its nearly as good as ASOIAF.
ASOIAF next year probably.
I'll probably sprinkle in some more short stories like Piranesi imbetween before the next year.

I would be interested to hear a thorough, objective assessment of the series as to its literary value or quality. I enjoy the books because they're fun and insane. I also never got to read them as a kid.
>>

I enjoy her writing style. Downbelow Station itself was a bit slow and maybe a tad convoluted, too many moving parts.
Wanting to check out her other work at some point, Fortress in the Eye of Time seems intriguing.

I think her opinion had something to do with the overarching story arc. She was comparing it favorably to Goosebumps. No idea how we ended up on YA novels other than I think I was reading Harry Potter for the first time. I learned what a TERF was from this chick and I didn't have the heart to tell her I thought Rowling's best work was on Twitter.
>>
>>25430696
I've heard good things about her Foreigner series too, only caveat is that it's long and she's now retired from writing, so it's also going to be unfinished most likely.

>Said food is already paid for.
>Decide to go because free food.
>Go, give the server my friends name, takes me to one of the dining room areas.
>Jabba the Hutt: Hot Topic Variant is there.

>Multiple plates of half-finished food in front of her.
>Looks up at me with barely focused eyes.
>Slurs out a "Yo."
>Wut.jpg.
>Grab a seat.
>Ask where former friend is.
>"No clue." She answers after a five minute pause, devouring a burger messily and noisily.
>She orders another one and swigs a soft drink.
>Burps.
>Try to make conversation.
>She focuses on her free food.
>Order for myself, resign myself to eating and leaving.
>She orders a few different desserts while I am eating a chicken sandwich.
>Devours the plate contents one by one like Unicron.
>Picks up on plate and licks it, leaving purple lipstick markings.
>Sets it down.
>"Take me to your place?"
>Wut.jpg.
>She says my former friend is picking her up there.
>Serving staff are looking haggard and the Chili's is near closing.
>Sigh and agree.
>Drive her back to my place.
>No sense of threat or any worry she might be a serial killer of anything but bags of chips.
>She gets to my place.
>Sits on my leather couch.
>Farts.
>"Where's the shitter?"
>Show her.
>She goes in, closes door.
>Loud farting, struggling, swearing, cursing.
>The stink starts to escape under the door.
>Ten minutes pass.
>Awkwardly ask if she is ok.
>No answer.
>Toilet flushes, sounding like a choking infant.
>She comes out.
>Did not wash hands.
>Sits on couch.
>"Want to eat my pussy?"
>Burps.
>Politely decline.
>"Your loss."
>Awkward silence from both of us, she farts loudly.
>Gets up like a rescue crew unbeaching a whale.
>Wobble-staggers to bathroom
>Grabs my copy of Jurassic Park
>Wut.jpg
>"What are you doing?!"
>"You don't have any toilet paper."
>"Under the sink."
>"Used it!"
>Grab the book from her.
>Tell her to shit and leave.

Never saw her again. Had to call a plumber and it cost me $1200 to fix the toilet she ruined. Book is safe and was sanitized.

>Artemis is where it's at.
>The science is great

At the end of the book:
>we are seriously re-thinking the fact that we routed the entire life-support material for the entire habitat through some random room where sweaty men have to straddle pipes and turn the valves by hand
>and by the way this is literally the foundation for the entire plot

The fact that they mentioned it in the narrative once doesn't make it even 1% more legitimate. The entire fucking world was shit and had no basis in any actual system more recent than a WWII German submarine. I became fucking stupider by reading this book. Martian was better because he plagiarized some of the science from reality. Red Space Mosquitos was better because it had all that language shit. Artemis had the best characters and writing, (not saying much btw) but the actual science was so fucking dumb, for real.
