Human Acts is about how South Korean dictatorship called martial low in 1980s and massacred worker protests in Gwangju together with the whole city. The SK government sent in the special korean commandos that served in Vietnam war (they were famous for war crimes) they then start killing the protesting people andinnocents, including women and children. Jailing those who survived and torturing them and raping them in prison for decades. It's about psychology of community and how it turns into a crowd and how terrible is it for one's identity to be torn out from the crowd by violent force. It is about violence and trauma. It's about how the community of the town got torn apart yet there are still some threads that bind them together.

North Korean sleeper agent in South Korea gets message to return home after about 20 years of total silence from his handlers. He has to abandon his fake identity and his family. However for each member of the family the 24 hours are just as important, but for different reason. It's like that amazing Simpsons episode. I didn't say in the post that the book has very interesting structure that fits it's subject matter. It has no main character and no singular narrator, it's like the book is crawling on one thread of a web, from person to person, from one time to another, as if it's consciousness of the crowd (or greek term "oikos" could describe it better than crowd) narrating it. There's even chapter narrated in second person narrator and it's not cringe in fact it's great - that's how good is Kang's writing.
