Redpill me on Freud /lit/. I read his early case studies on hysteria that he did with Breuer and while it was interesting I don't want to spend a whole year reading everything the man wrote. What are your recommends?
>normally if something bad happens you talk it out or think it out and go about your life
>sometimes it's something you can't think about because it's too frightening, or it happens when you're in a semiconscious state, or both
>then the memory gets 'stuck' in your unconscious like a foreign body and finds expression in physical symptoms, hence hysteria
>but if you can be made to remember what set all this going and say it out loud it will be 'processed' and your hysterical symptoms will go away
>also a lot of the time it's something sexual
That's basically all I got from those case studies ngl.

Start with Interpretation of Dreams
Then read Three Essays on Sexuality
Then read Totem and Taboo
Then read Beyond the Pleasure Principle
Then read The Ego and the Id
Then read Moses and Monotheism

Then read Lacan

Everything is about wanting to fuck your own mother or getting your dick sucked

Thanks anon I really will do this. Just think about it, you've influenced what some pseud stranger will spend many hours doing for the next few weeks at least. Get a good mental picture. I'd also want to read Civilization and its Discontents, even I have heard of that one. I'm assuming its absence is just an oversight as it is so famous and influential.

havent read it, that was the reading list for a grad level seminar on freud that i took, minus any modern scholarship on freud

Imagine how impoverished the existence of so many anons here is that the closest thing we have to a grad seminar is 4chan.

This list is good but you might want to start with "Lay analysis" since it's a summary of all his ideas.

kevin macdonald's culture of critique includes a very insightful critique of Freud's entire oeuvre as essentially unfalsifiable assertions, upheld by arguments from authority by the head of a personality cult, that doesn't even attempt to engage with the scientific method.

Then read Deleuze and Guattari to deboonk Freud and lacan’s insertion of Oedipus everywhere.

He was a jew which means his psychology was not about helping patients get better, but about the extraction of money. Each new theory of why you are fucked up served as a way to continue the narrative that there is something deeper going on here so you should totally keep giving me money. A lot of mental illness can be broken down into either trauma or guilt, simple as.
