if i was certain i would spend the rest of my days on a desert island, never again to rejoin human society, i have the feeling my imagination would realise its uselessness and fade away, and any books i brought would be like so much unintelligible ink and wood-pulp

what did i do to deserve this abuse?

and anyway, don't you feel the same? your imagination needs a sense of real possibility in order to function at all imo. books are vivid and stirring because they suggest an expanded sense of what's possible in the world. this is partly why our art is so weak and hollow compared with 100 years ago - in the world of the 1920s everything was so much more up for grabs, developments in painting or literature seemed like they really could leap over into revolutions in politics and society. whereas now history seems preprogrammed, stuck on rails of economic growth and competition, and imagination senses that it's redundant, a vestigial organ from a happier time. to me this is the same problem as finding yourself on a desert island. agree or disagree?

I think you pose a big problem. Does imagination really need a sense of possibility in order to function ? I think I disagree, or at least I disagree partially. If someone were to grow up, assuming that is even possible, all alone on a desert island, then yes, that would be all they would ever be capable of imagining, or nearly so. Perhaps they'd imagine the rest of the world as another, boundless, desert island like their own. How could they even conceive of anything else ?

But someone that's developed their imagination before, someone that comes with the tools to imagine primed and ready will not suffer the loss of imagination on a desert island, if anything it will become more intense and powerful given the fact that there is nothing to distract him. What I think is that it will invite despair, because you will begin to imagine what you miss and what you miss you cannot recreate with your imagination if not in a stunted, temporary way
