What is your opinions on China Miéville and his work?
>>25425256>Miéville is married to artist Season Butler.Ridiculous.
Bas Lag trilogy: literally sabotaged by himself because it got too popular and he didn't like being too popularKing Rat, Un Lun Dun, Kraken, The City & The City, Embassytown, Railsea: cringeOctober: skips over the execution of the Romanovs because he's a coward
>>25425256Perdido Street Station is one of the worst things I've ever tried reading, had to drop it a quarter in
>>25425256Love him. Moby-Dick is beloved for a reason, and Pierre+Confidence-Man are woefully underr->China MievilleLiterally who?
>>25425256Dumb commie but the bas-lags are pretty good reads if you like weird shit
>>25425445>Dumb chuddie poster can't reconcile his hates and loves
>>25425256The Jonathan Blow of sci-fi His latest is some Pynchon copycat that's something like 1300 pages
>>25425256I like his Bas Lag series, though the first is a bit meh. The city and the city was surprisingly enjoyable and a well done example of weird fiction.
He's very good but thinks too highly of himself and is the type of person that on purpose tries to stay "underground". He also suffers from that cliché Gen X/early millennial mindset where he believes the world (especially art and creativity) is fucked and only he is the special chosen one that knows the answer to things and how to fix it. Like another anon said Jon Blow is a similar archetype. If you just read his work in isolation it's very good and absolutely worth reading. But you will roll your eyes when you realize he's sabotaging stories purely to try and filter mainstream readers out. Also this entire self-definition compared to the mainstream sickeningly seeps through to even his sex life. He used to be bisexual and polyamorous 20 years ago, but the moment that became even a little bit acceptable/normal he suddenly took a 180 and doesn't identify with it anymore.I'm pretty sure when he inevitably becomes very mainstream he will disavow his works and claim people that like it are retarded.
>>25425256He's poison, but he'll soon be forgotten, so no (not much) harm done.
>>25425256Henry Rollins is cool
>>25425256>ooh bong bay windows and is that a lovecraftian racism, ahh im going insaaane
>>25425256>Is named China>Is A CommunistWho writes this shizz?
>>25425270Oil driller and a socialist. Common pairing. I knew one, too.
>>25425275First 2 Bas Lags are really great, third is part of his odd "literary" turn that marked the rest of his work and is vastly inferior. Embassytown was OK but the "warp" space wasn't important to the plot at all except as a way of delaying their relief, seemed a useless feature of the novel despite him billing it as central to its sci-fi world
