Did anybody else get filtered by this piece of shit? Why is this lauded as the pinnacle of the novel; is it simply a signpost of the sophisticate fart-sniffer to fit in with their fellows? I've heard it referred to as the height of prose (clearly what is supposed to be the redeeming feature of the book, considering the "plot" is a single day of a cuckold arranging his hotwife to get fucked by her bull), but found the syntax limp and the dialogue stilted beyond belief. Does it owe its reputation to some sort of meme among the literary cabal? An elaborate prank? It is bad. It is a bad book. I don't care that he wrote it this way on purpose; it sucks.Repeat after me: >Difficult does not equal good.
>>25426756Filtered
>>25426756As Anthony Burgess said, it's a poor novel but good writing, if you want to make that distinction. It's a writer's novel really.
>>25426772>but good writing>removing all punctuation and context from your writing is good like what the actual fuck bant screen you must choose schizophrenia here is my inner monologue am I a good writer now mommy I did it
>>25426808NTA, new to the thread, but I agree that it's bad writing. What's more, it makes it impossible to read the work out-loud as it was written -- you have to insert your own punctuation and breaks. (Also: Compare the audiobook of Blood Meridian to the written text, lol.)
>>25426809Blood Meridian actually is good, thoughbeit.
>>25426809>you have to insert your own punctuation and breaksNo you don't? I don't add pauses when I read Blood Meridian, I just read it straight through.
broskies i cant explain how much i love ulysses. this book will come to me to my grave. this is the most full of life book i know of
>>25426999Okay now try and read it out loud. It can't be done, you'll turn blue in the face. Blood Meridian is Reddit, the Novel.
>>25427113>now try and read it out loudI just did.>It can't be doneIt was just done.>you'll turn blue in the faceI did not.
>>25426756Yes, literally 90% of people are openly "filtered" by it and the other 10% are lying about liking it. Likely to try and recruit the next generation of academic bag holders.Same goes for Infinite Jest and Gravity's Rainbow BTW.
>>25427132> "A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools."Why lie, though? Do you read out-loud like these niggers? https://youtu.be/eRcoVskusS4?si=iJQ4oqqO4lbgB5MU&t=37
To anons who were "filtered", what were your gripes with it?To anons who "got it", what did you like most about it?
>i'm too stupid to understand it, therefore everyone else is
>>25427113It's easy to read Blood Meridian out loud. I think you might be retarded anon.
>>25427140>Why lie, though?I'm not lying.>niggersWow, who pissed in your cheerios?
>>25427113>Muh redditMentally raped by McCHADy. BM haters just call it "reddit" over and over again because they've seen other people do it and it makes them feel smart.

>>25427136I loved Infinite Jest but bounced off Gravity's Rainbow in the opening ~4 pages. >>25427140>[A bunch of guys], [and here is what they looked like], [attacked from horseback]. It's really not that complicated in terms of syntax or requiring you to juggle multiple subjects in working memory. It's just asking you to understand where you are in the sentence, even if that [section] is longer than you're accustomed to.>>25427150>I am VERY smart because I understood the bookThis is the entirety of the appeal to Ulysses. It's just a way to flex your supposed intellectual superiority a la conquering the challenge. Like claiming Death Grips is the greatest band of all-time or drinking IPAs, your attempts to signal your sophistication is just as deficient of genuine virtue as a teenage girl claiming they love Twilight, Taylor Swift, and Whiteclaws. Note that nobody has anything of substance to say about Ulysses but would instead rather focus their energies on pointing fingers and ad hominem at those who found it (rightfully) repugnant.
>25427247anime and video games, also didnt read
>>25427247>It's really not that complicated in terms of syntax or requiring you to juggle multiple subjects in working memory. It's just asking you to understand where you are in the sentence, even if that [section] is longer than you're accustomed to.Pretentious nigger, compare the audiobook to the written text. The narrator HAS to add his own punctuation because the author was too much of a special snowflake. If he reads run-on sentences without structure, it sounds like utter shit. It's just poor writing. >>25427172It really is the purest distillation of Reddit, though. Smarmy, pretentious, and utterly stupid. Most of the characters have less depth than marvel capeshit. Wow so evil and edgy. So hardcore. Muh archetypes.
>>25427333>It really is the purest distillation of Reddit, thoughYou can criticize it all you like but calling it reddit is a massive mischaracterization. There are dozens upon dozens of dogshit pieces of media which fit your description better.
>>25426756You haven't read it.Kill yourself.
>>25427356And I'm not going to read it, faggot. What are you gonna do, cry about it?>>25427347Off the top of my head, Andy Weir is the epitome of Reddit writing.
you will never be smart and you will never belong.
>>25427703>"ur dumb"What a riveting defense of the book. Thanks anon, you've really opened my eyes and demonstrated your profound intelligence for all of us.
>>25426756This book being propped up by the elites is what convinced me that their goal is to destroy western culture.
>>25427682>literally posts a thread crying about a novel he hasn't readCry moar, bitch.
you will NEVER belong.
>>25427720elites hated it you buffoon, Virginia Woolf literally said it's just a self taught guy writing. Faggots like you can only see conspiracy because your double digits iq brain can not comprehend complexity beyond basic algebra and not feel anything beyond the evolutionary emotion of skepticism
>>25427756Elites change retard.
>>25427722I asked the question "why is this lauded as the pinnacle of the novel" at the start of the thread and you (samefagging) have said repeatedly some variation of "ur dumb" instead of answering the fucking question. What are the actual merits to this 800 page dumpster fire? On what grounds could you ever call it the greatest novel ever written? Answer the question or get the fuck out of the thread.
>>25427765>he doesn't know how to detect samefagsOh dear. Here's a wild idea: why don't you read the fucking book and answer your own stupid question?
>>25427768>why don't you just eat this pile of shit and figure out why 50 billion flies like it!No. I checked it out from the library, flipped through it for about 15 minutes (jumping ahead several times to see if it was just the opening that was unpalatable), and returned it. I am asking YOU why YOU think it's great. That should be easy, right? Since you read the book and thought it was so great?
>>25427762name one living, contemporary elite who praises ulysses. alec baldwin? salman rushdie? who are the actual NWO cloaks trying to psy op the world into irish modernism?

Joyce FOMO really makes retards fritz out, huh.
>Ask /lit/ to discuss a piece of literature>a single person gives a legitimate defense of it, but all they can say is that the book is "full of life">every other post is just "ur dumb lol"
>>25427720Did They choose him [Joyce] because of all those word-smitten Puritans dangling off of Slothrop’s family tree? Were They trying to seduce his brain now, his reading eye too? There are times when Slothrop actually can find a clutch mechanism between him and Their iron-cased engine far away up a power train whose shape and design he has to guess at, a clutch he can disengage, feeling then all his inertia of motion, his real helplessness . . . it is not exactly unpleasant, either. Odd thing. He is almost sure that whatever They want, it won’t mean risking his life, or even too much of his comfort. But he can’t fit any of it into a pattern, there’s no way to connect somebody like Dodson-Truck with somebody like Katje. . . .
what is supposed to be filtering about the book?
idk i just feel like the book is fun. i actively enjoy rereading every page 3 times to figure out wtf is going on. and then when i get it i go "ooh haha funy". finnegans wake is fun to read too, and that one i have to read out aloud like a spaz retard in an irish accent because there are 30 puns per page that you just ddont get without vocalising them. i agree that the plot is not the book's strong point, but the prose is very fun and random passages from the novel pop into my head when i'm mowing the lawn and they make me laugh because they are so nifty. i dont get what getting filtered means, im not smart at all but i read the book and had fun doing so, if you read the book and have fun thats all that matters :-)
>>25429257idk, i didnt find it that hard but neither should anyone familiar with classic lit and poetry. if the entire book filters you, you're self-reporting that you're a pseud, or even a retard.
>>25429257It's aggressively unpleasant to read. Normal human beings do not form thoughts in the clipped stream-of-piss fashion that is depicted in the novel. He eschews punctuation for no reason other than to be a prick. It's not really a question of whether I'm capable of reading it (I am), but rather why I should waste my time with something so needlessly and tastelessly abrasive.
