What do you think of this book?

As a person he's a piece of shit like all the Beats. As a writer he's competent but no more than that.

The book is OK. Not the best thing in the world, not the worst thing either.

Boring but it made more sense as I've gotten older.

Kind of exhilarating once you get into it. You can almost taste the Benzedrine.

All good writers are bastards.

I envy Jack and crew so much. Life really was unpredictable back then.

I didn't like that book as much as I did Dharma Bums and Desolation Angels. Otherwise OK I guess.

The popular Beat artists were treated like royalty and acted accordingly.

Yeah, Dharma Bums is pretty great. The ending is positively ecstatic.
I retain a soft spot for Doctor Sax too.

I thought Desolation Angels was better, just more multilayered since it has that mix of fun adventures with friends and also the special kind of loneliness/longing only travel can bring out of you. Kerouac conveys that loneliness well.

I feel like Kerouac's one of those writers who you admire a ton when you're young, and then kind of dismiss as overrated when you're slightly older, and then fall in love with in a new way when you're even older. he has this starry-eyed quality as a person that i don't see in many other authors.
