One of Jurgen Habermas' better known and more interesting books is all about how various forms of writing eventually gave rise to the "public sphere", public opinion, etc. Newspaper editorials, private exchange of letters, and so on. This culture of writing, especially in the total absence of electronic distraction, is how you end up with doorstoppers like Clarissa and Pamela (he mentions those), and Habermas also (IIRC) relates an amusing anecdote about two upper-class women who basically had everything provided for and had absolutely nothing else to do, so for fun they would write each other frequently and verbally mess with each other. Although they were actually friends (or at least acted like it, whether women can actually be friends is another topic), they were so bored that they would throw quasi-veiled insults and verbal darts at each other in their exchanges, roasting each other just purely out of boredom, and for something to do. Typical woman behavior, yes, but there is a certain reason to just want something to happen out of boredom (this reason is revealed as foolish when it ends with something bad happening).

Its possible im rationalizing this because Wittgenstein is the goat, but you dont truly understand what the philosopher is saying until the end, where you can look back at all the repeated arguments reinforcing a point that is bookended by the final arguments. Its just a good way to make sure you don't forget by the end. But while reading it feels like a time waster. Also often the argument will be repeated in a different context (added context of prior introduced points and references, so that it becomes recontexualized).I can't confidently say this is the case for all Philosophers, or even most. But I can pretend it is.
