I really wish that a lot of the Roman folk songs survived but the stupid fuckers wouldn't write anything down, its kinda crazy that fucking ancient china thought about writing music down a couple thousand years before the Romans and Greeks thought it would be a good idea.

I finished reading Faulkner's Light in August. Yeah, that's gotta be one of the greatest novels I've ever read. I'm sure I will return to it often throughout my life.

I was at the library when I finished it, and as soon as I did (+ turning back to the introduction to read that), I stood up and immediately began browsing for my next book. There were a handful of candidates but I ultimately decided on Pynchon's Vineland. I read the first 30 pages or so, and I'm enjoying it so far! The most readable of any Pynchon I've read, though admittedly I'm not nearly as big of a Pynchon fan as most of /lit/.

Not all Catamites were for gay sex, they did other things too and if these guys are sailors they probably lived pretty good lives but not enough to afford a Catamite, that was like a Politician/obscenely rich thing to have in Roman Society, so its most likely a poorly translated wealth joke or maybe a sexual joke about visiting a whorehouse and laying with a Catamite instead of a woman? It's hard to say but most likely they are just a crude joke while at sea to amuse them.

For your vocab do you make a list or make cards or something? I have this weird autism where I come across a word and I know what it means but I second guess myself, look it up, and turns out that I'm right anyway.

I'm watching Taggart. I can nae understand all that is said but it seems that that is unnecessary
>>

>>
>>25427946
If I have to look it up and it's a new word, I write it down on a piece of paper I use as a bookmark, or if none is available, add it to the notes app on my phone. And then once I accrue ten words, I write one-page of prose using all ten words, this helps with retention and further usage in real writing.

>I have this weird autism where I come across a word and I know what it means but I second guess myself, look it up, and turns out that I'm right anyway.
I feel that. In fact, there are a shortlist of particularly onerous words I've no doubt looked up dozens of times that I just can't seem to obtain sure footing upon. So yeah, I definitely feel your frustration on this.

I haven't spoken to my dad in close to a decade for reasons I won't go into.
The point there is that if I have a memory of a conversation with him, I know for a fact it was before 2017.
We both shared a passion for music and we were talking about Talk Talk's later albums and Mark Hollis' solo work, etc., and my dad mentions how it was such a shame he died of cancer.
I wasn't aware he was dead, and was surprised I never heard about it but I had no reason to doubt it and the conversation naturally moved on.
So recently I ended up on Mark Hollis' wikipedia article and notice that he did die of cancer, but in 2019, at least two years after I ever had a conversation with him.
I've been ruminating on that one. I remember how sincere he sounded when he said it, and it wasn't like I asked "is he still alive?" and he bullshitted a response, he broached it like you would when someone mentions an old neighbour.
>>

strange one. of course ‘oh he died of cancer’ always has about 1 in 3 chance of being right. i like talk talk’s later albums too, they always got a lot of splash on /mu/ when i was a teenager (halfway responsible for inventing post-rock i think). isn’t it true they got a new french keyboardist late in the game and he changed the whole direction?

In a weird way, I kind of love the Sharty hack. Because it's part of our lore, you know? It's part of our history alongside the Alien Photo, the Fappening, Pepe and Meme Magic, all of it. And what places on the internet have lore like 4chan? What places are left like that? The Sharty hack would be included in a ballad about us if one was ever written. I think that's kind of nifty.

Thinking how I'm going to tackle a situation.
My dad is rich and I want to get money from him.
I have some arguments up my sleeve (gave him 2 grandchildren, not a fuck up, always maintained a good relationship, outside a downpayment of a house never asked money).

He boasted just last week about having millions. He could make my life 5x easier by giving me 100k euro. If I got that I'd be golden. I'd sell my current house, buy a new one with a low monthly payment. I'd be able to save easily, no stress.

But of course a boomer and his money is not easily separated. His boasting about having millions does make it easier for me. If you're so wealthy go spread the wealth. You're turning 69 what is the wait for? You could buy a house for all you children and why wouldn't you? You have more than enough. I shouldn't struggle while you live in a massive home where the AC bill is multiple thousands a month because you have money to burn.
>>
>>25429150
Yeah I got that entire feeling from this post >>25428897 to be honest
Real advice? Sneak him in (don't make it you who says this or have it in any way linked back to you) the fact that Democrats can always come back into power and they are always fucking the inheritance tax. Funneling some amount of inheritance towards your children before death, avoids inheritance tax, and there is a decent maximum for what is not taxed as a cash gifts ($15k or so can be given per person to an individual per year without being taxed AT ALL) and a mother and a father are two people and they can do this yearly per child. Each $30k~ taxless contribution equals $15k saved (HALF) from Democrat graverobbing inheritance taxes (FACT!!!)
This is actually the way to do it, not even a con. The only trick is to help your parents feel they came up with the idea themselves.
>>
>>25429150
>>25429158
Not to mention the appeal to them in this operation is clear - time is of the essence, as it always is in matters of money. They will see their children enjoy the wealth before they die, build the family before they die, and every house bought or debt paid or investment complete is worth more than the same price in the future and grows more when done now. It's the way!!!
>>
you can have my isolation
you can have the hate that it brings
>>
>>25429158
>>25429164
Not an American but the point about wanting to see your children enjoy the money is what I would think If I had the money to give.
I have already told him I'm moving countries because this one is too expensive. Big hint in that I can't make ends meet in a regular way. And it's true. I moved here for him but wages are too low and cost is too high. I tried it. I gave you grandchildren and now I need to choose for my family. I'm very subtle with this, I never outright ask. But if this doesn't ring a bell I might just have to be blunt. He's not good with that sadly. Maybe he's changed but he was of the idea that he'll just deny the fact he will die one day so he'll make grand plans while I'm thinking
>You're nearing 70.. maybe focus on family for once?
Still not sure how to tackle it but subtlety has been tried, and I'm good at it.
>>
>>25429174
You might just have to be blunt because your story is very appealing. Makes him a Faulkner character or something (I don't know what characters resonate with you over on whatever rock)
>>
getting drunk in my office as the carpenters fix drywall!!! :D :D :D
>>
>>25429179
Potential downside with the blunt approach is he is a self-made man. And he expects his children to do it too. No free ride from him. My brother earns poorly at his company. For me after I told him my money troubles, he sent me a Masters study I can follow to eventually work as a manager with him.
He likes to give the occasional hand-out. So for birthdays and Christmas he gives decent. But an actual leg up, not really.
I'd rather have the opposite. Buy us a house and we'll be fine. I can't budget on the occasional money drop

Vineland must be the most accessible Pynchon I've read thus far. Accessible referring to not only ease and directness of thought, but entertainment too. It's a real page turner. Though of course the trade-off seems to be a loss of depth and complexity in philosophical perspectives, poetic imagination, and cultural commentary.

I CAN FEEL THE SPACE THAT YOUR IN
I'M GONNA BREATHE YOUR AIR

IF I CONTROLLED MY LIFE
BEYOND DESIGN
MY HEART AND MIND
CAN SEE IT NOW

CAN YOU FEEL ME IN HERE
COULD I FEEL WHAT YOU FEEL?
IF I COULD DIE WOULD I CRY, IF JUST TO FEEL THE TEARS?

IF I COULD STAND THERE WITH YOU
LET ME BREATHE

IF I COULD BE ANYTHING

IF I COULD BE A PART OF YOUR WORLD

NO MATTER HOW SMALL

JUST HOW GOOD IT FEELS TO LOVE
AND I'D FIND MEANING IN THE LOSS

It's been a while since I've played a really in-depth horse breeding sim, drop the name.
Also you might think its gay and girly to play horse breeding games but some of the early 90s ones were pure female autism with all the same grind and hallmarks of male autism except for cars, tanks, or hot women, it's literally just horse gatcha mechanics.
It also gets really addicting when you start horse racing and building a legacy for your bloodline to make it a legendary racing horse blood line... Or you can just breed unicorns, its up to you.

To be perfectly clear it is within precise reach. The work has been long in place but experienced a practical genocide in the 70s and and entire generation was produced with a silence mutation towards the project, and reproduced as others fell to extinction. Now it is a matter of dark archaeology - we are taking the bodies out of the closets, and listening to our own phantom pains. It is only a matter of applying the formula to the already prepared culture, they already know what they have been doing, and many of them already know what they are trying to do. The formula is within my grasp.
