I am presently undertaking a serious(ly) edgy study of Sade, in English translation, anyway, and this involved reading and taking my own notes on a bunch of intro essays. I've read the very short Oxtiern and various correspondence, etc, the shorter stuff before moving on to the longer/major four works. As part of this, I remembered that I had a copy of Visions of Excess, and started paging through it for the first time, looking for anything Sade-related.

Bataille's essay on the "Use Value of D.A.F. Sade" is an absolutely interminable read, at least in the second-hand (English) version that I read. Endless diverting clauses, parenthetical comments within parenthetical comments, etc. After a very difficult first half which opposes appropriation and excretion (eating vs. shitting, making money vs. spending, etc), he finally gets round to his concrete point: saying, roughly, that Sade is useful for commie revolutionaries and the like as a model on how to be pitiless to the enemy, and how to get rid of the Ancien Régime. This compares the political act of overthrowing a government, a thing simply to be got rid of, with the only real pleasure to be derived from taking a good fat shit: the pleasure of voiding it, getting rid of it. It should also be said that this historical literary appropriation of Sade is a validation of the current (and basically correct) chud/conservative American tendency to use Sade as an early boogeyman figure in the history of hated evil left-wing/commie politics. Sade's membership in the nobility is irrelevant here. Sade changed his colors as the revolutionary winds blew, like any good politician, but historical authorities other than the above contemporary chud writers indicate that he had his own concrete political ideas that had a certain commie or far-left tint. His extreme anti-religious attitude (also his best trait as a human being) is one example. The pleasure of tyranny is another.

Still, the Bataille book contains other fragments that I skimmed (his diss track review of "The Lugubrious Game", an early painting by Dalí, as one example). I have just enough curiosity now to maybe read Story of the Eye, an old /lit/ favorite, especially since it looks to be quite short and not horribly difficult. It is true that a comment in the image connects my authorship to another live post on the forum.

enjoyed your synopsis.

i was recently reading rosalind krauss on bataille's theories of primitive art: the idea is apparently that the will manifested in early cave art is not the will to celebrate the human form and express ourselves, but to disfigure, mutilate and parody humanity, a sadism turned against ourselves. intriguing regardless of whether it's true. need to return to bataille himself at some point - but i've already got way too much on my reading list.

if your reading list isn't already at max capacity i highly recommend checking out barthes' book sade, fourier, loyola.

Restif wasn't decadent THOUGH. He hated gooners and the decandent elite. He was a tradpilled sex haver who thought children should be married off to each other early so they can be sexually satisfied from an early age instead of resorting to touching their sticks all day. He's also more than just a smut writer

He's also the guy 9/10 of /lit/ will not have heard of and so ignore him from the picture

Bataille also had a crazy, abusive, syphlitic dad (one of the earliest pieces is a sort of dream fragment indicating dad's abuse), and this would seem to go a long way toward explaining his derangement. Apparently he may also have witnessed a Spanish bullfighter get gored right through the eyeball, which if true would also go a long way toward explaining the eye fixation. Academics like the one who wrote the intro like to tut-tut this sort of thing as reductive, but, I mean, /c'mon/.

genet here looks kinda like elliot page, im sure that if he were to transition he would pass

Reminder that Genet groomed a circus kid thirty years younger than him into becoming an ropewalker, made him fail on his first try, which ended his whole career, and abandoned him, only for the kid to commit suicide, all just so Genet could have something to laugh about.

Interesting. Reminds me of the story "The Acrobat" by Gerard Reve.

Klossowski shares a similar reading of Sade to Bataille, where the act of regicide has to be repeated infinitely. The revolution never ends.

Is Jean Genet really like Bataille?
I thought he was all about perversion and transgressing social norms so I was excited to read him but I despise Bataille
