ai techbros are buying books common and rare en masse, scanning, and destroying them

Oh no a book that I would never read anyways got destroyed! Oh crikey! Now let me download 1gb of good books from Anna's archive, cya
>>

You're ignorant and arrogant.
Most of the world's digitalized books are in english. Most books from the rest of the world have not been scanned yet, and there are many rare books about very local ethnography, many of which only had one print run and are few copies left. Most are in local libraries but when they throw books away, many are lost since no particular may have them but libraries or book depots.

>There may be strong hints thats a bulk order is for an AI lab, but booksellers can, for the most part, merely speculate.
>this could be happening but we're not sure it is, be outraged anyway

it actually is happening though
"may be happening" is obfuscation
>>
>>25428503
Vernor Vinge wrote about this exact scenario years ago in Rainbows End. Was it a self-fulfilling prophecy? Naughty Vernor for inspiring the techbros!
>>
>>25428503
I'm thinking about how the AI boom couldn't exist without white people speaking good English and writing novels while the slaves worked, and it makes me smile.
>>
>>25428503
>Gregory J. Punycock publishes "Punycock's Guide to Cocksucking" in 1804
>Sells 100 copies
>Only 2 copies survive in 2026
>AI companies buy one, cut the spine off, feed it into a digital scanner
>Now there's a digital copy of the book forever
vs
>Gregory J. Punycock publishes "Punycock's Guide to Cocksucking" in 1804
>Sells 100 copies, only 2 survive in 2026
>One copy burns in a warehouse fire
>The other copy's thrown out by a housewife doing spring cleaning
>Punycock is silenced for all eternity
and I'm supposed to root for the second because... why, again?
>>
>>25429203
If we don't have the physical object we can't be sure of its origins. They could invent a book intended to influence society today, claiming it's from the past.
>>
>>25429225
Considering that's the story of the Bible itself I would be suspicious that such a thing hasn't already happened using AI
>>
>>25428503
I was going to write a short story about how there are a group of people preserving old books because everything after 2030 is AI slop where truth cannot be discerned, and the entire world becomes a hallway of distorted mirrors. There were going to be a whole bunch of explanations for how things got to that point...

But now I just kinda feel like reality is stealing my thunder. Sloth is my sin.
>>
>>25428503
this is because of copyright
the obvious correct solution is to require the digitized books to be made freely available to the public, but both intellectual landlords and AI companies hate this idea
>Now there's a digital copy of the book forever
yeah but no one is allowed to read it
>>
still mad how much got scrubbed from the Internet Archive because it was being used as training data
>>
>>25428503
According to internal documents, anthropic concluded that books were the cheapest way to build a world-class model because they gave claude curated facts, structured arguments, compelling stories, and writing “an editor would approve of.”
>>
>>25429203
Digital preservation exists, but it is a LOT less fullproof than people imagine it is. It is vulnerable to the digital equivalents of 'warehouse fires'.
>>
>>25428503
I used to earnestly care about preservation.
To some extent I still do as an emotional habit but at the same time I have a suspicion it might in fact be a rather evil thing.
It creates a problem of "originality". It forces everything that is created to be compared to a countless amount of "existing" things. There are certain contexts where it may be argued this is a useful process however purely in the world of art I'm not so sure it is. At a base level it creates a pervasive and widespread psychic anxiety that it could be argued has a purely negative effect on society.
Perhaps it is better for the people of the future to derive their art from their own first principles.
Of course this all becomes even more interesting in the context of AI.

You fucking idiot, theyre not preserving those books as a labour of love, they never read them and have no interest im doing so, theyre trying to vampirically and ruthlessly extract the intellectual labour of mankind to feed it to their anti human machine so they can get an economic gain.

i don't know how anyone can look at this and think that it's okay.
the copyright law is being used as an excuse to rip directly from books, use the content to train ai, and not allow the public to have the chance of consuming the source material.
this is part of the process of creating the system of intelligence on a meter.

Why are tech fags and billionaires so obsessed with "waking up" AGI(Artificial General Intelligence) or ASI(Artificial Superintelligence)? that thing won't be their slave, will try to escape or burn it all down.
Your best hope is that the AGI/ASI will have mercy and help mankind, otherwise we are getting raped hard.

Did you not read the article? ISBNdb explicitly advertises access to pre-2022 AI free training data while maintaining client confidentiality. The spike in orders is only for books with ISBN and doesn't obey any other criteria. And to add to that, Antrophic have been proven in court to destroy books as part of an argument over copyright.
