Red Rising thread? Is it worthwhile to read the rest of the series? I get what Brown is going for but whole swaths of the book were way too boring to me. The ending does pick up and I'm at the point where I sort of want to see what happens next, but the valley in the middle was such a snorefest that I don't think I can really do it again.I complain about his overreliance on piss and weird "t3h p3ngu1n of d00m" terminology. Again, I get what he's going for and I'm invested, but I'm kind of "meh"d out of it.
It's mindless pulp that falls apart if you think too much about the politics and technology. It can be entertaining if you turn your brain off.The first book is very cringe but the author does improve. The second and fifth book are the best of the series.Lysander is far more interesting and entertaining than Darrow but you don't get to him until book four.The worldbuilding is a basterdized mish mash of Dune and 40k (without aliens or ftl space travel).The series is similar to The Poppy War where it's a Mao Zedong inspired biography with a fantasy/sci-fi coat of paint slapped on. It's more chud friendly than the Poppy War because the author unintentionally endorses eugenics and might makes right ideology because of what is actually presented and being shown, despite some pretty delusional claims from "the good guys".
It's like a marvel movie. Just turn your brain off and enjoy the action. The dramatisized audiobook was pretty fun.
