it's basically trolling someone if you tell them to read 2500 year old philosophy and spend years on it (Plato, Aristotle, etc.) before doing anything else instead of picking up a decent history of philosophy, maybe a secondary for the sake of context which you might need for Kant, Hegel or someone elsebasically, you are forced to suffer through primitive philosophy (like the Presocratics) and almost, but not yet really scientific accounts of the mind and biology (Aristotle). most of it is pointless to learn and what you might need is just context, some kind of general understanding of what they wrote about when other authors refer to themunless you really really like reading old, outdated science and philosophy, mixed in with skepticism, it's best to just skip to the authors you want to read or something
>>25429248It’s just because people keep asking where to start
Spoken exactly like someone who hasn't read the Greeks.
>>25429248It's not "trolling". I don't even consider you a human being if you haven't seriously studied all of Plato and Aristotle in Ancient Greek.
Start with Menelaos Stephanides.
>>25429263Nobody who reads Ancient Greek would say such a thing nor be on 4chan for that matter. "I don't believe you. You're a fucking liar" (cit.)
>>25429248Start with the anglos
>>25429269skip the anglos
>>25429248The advice is sound, although premised on the assumption that you know how to read, how to choose what to read and why. Case in point, you've been advised to read the Greeks; it was your choice to go to philosophy, moreover it was your choice to go to Plato among all the philosophy you could've selected. Yet you're incapable of discerning which parts of Plato to read and why. The impression that you're under, by which you assumed you must read every word of Plato, given a passing interest in philosophy, is idiotic.

>>25429248Telling people to start with any particular philosopher(s) is not a good approach. Many ways to the same end.

Socratic conversations are one of the most enjoyable genre that have been created. In fact it's on the same level of me chad you virgin but deeper. It's always a pleasure to see those retarded opinion sellers getting mogged by socratruth
>>25429248That's why I always tell people to read what they find interesting at first. I wouldn't want to overwhelm a beginner and extinguish whatever kindling of philosophy they have in their heart. But inevitably, if you want to really get philosophy, then you HAVE to (re)start with the Greeks, or you'll just be lost forever. Sorry, it's just a true statement.

>>25429248It is hazing. The thing about 4chan is that you can safely ignore half of it. You have to figure out which half, though.
>>25429946I've been saying this for years. I use "a couple beers and a nice tree" though.
You can read the entirety of Plato and Aristotle in a year, and it's some of the most enjoyable, accessible, and thought-provoking philosophy ever written, not to mention the cornerstone for the entirety of Western thought. Why wouldn't you start there?
start = pause you goof
>>25429248Pointless to learn? How did you come to that conclusion? do you have an argument or have you been retroaxtively BTFO 2500 years ago by some boy fucking swarthy skinned smelly greeks?
>>25430393I just don't find Plato interesting and reading him genuinely upsets me. I think it's the format and the yes men that are employed in his dialogues. Aristotle is much better but even then, he's basically been superseded by Kant.
>>25429248Fuck the philosophers. Read the poets and historians.
>>25430542I like the poetry and historians, just not Plato
Plato niggas, can I get the trooncord invite link?
>>25429248Primitive? Are you retarded? Plato/Aristotle literally give endless pages of based text that completely btfo the entire faggotry of all modern political discourse in the West. I've read the ancients and connected more with them then I have with any person alive today. Your post is absolutely abhorrent and I suspect you've not read a single goddamn thing in quite some time, ancient or not.
