Homer could have made Hector kill at least one of main heroes in a fair fight. He never was a real menace, and every time Homer hyped him, he failed in a comical way. I know this is the most epic Greek wanking of all time and the main cast are like superheroes, but come on, Apollo taking off Patroclus's armor? Ajax killing himself after so many battles with Hector? Alexander and some random Trojans did more damage to the top Achaeans than the main antagonist, lol. And yes, everyone outside Odysseus, Menelaus, Agamemnon, Diomedes, Ajax, Nestor, Patroclus, and Achilles was cannon fodder. It looks like the entire epic is Hector being gaslighted by the gods into believing he was powerful so Achilles could win a very plain and artificial glory. If Hector were indeed powerful, then, in fact, Achilles' glory would be justified, but in the end, it was just the gods playing action battle with humanity like we did as kids with our toys. Kinda of pity both sides.
Maybe Im looking at it with modern leans but I wonder if ancient greeks realised how demiurgical the entire thing was.

*note, I know Ajax death isnt in the Illiad but just to use as another example

Hector is wanked because he gets a scene with his kids and people like to root for the underdog. His actual martial performance isn't great and relies heavily on allied support. Rip Sarpedon.

>heavily on allied support
and heaven's support
