I've read the Pope, Lattimore, and Fagles translations. Currently reading the Murray/Dimock Loebs in translation and the original Greek. I'm not interested in the Emily Wilson copy or Nolan's film. Contemporary politics can inform an artist's vision, but it rarely produces GOOD art. It becomes first and foremost a vehicle for their own politics. Blacks and trans people in an ancient Greek myth? Fine whatever. I'd rather someone made a Black Odysseus and frame it in Africa over this milquetoast all-shades-must-be-represented inclusive slop that came out of American critical theory as the left's Received Groupthink. Why the fuck are people taking Wilson or Nolan seriously? They're both elitists who are praised for being brilliant but in fact have their heads up their own asses. Mostly I hate what they're doing to art. They're abusing something good. Books for this feel?
