>>25434189Standard Ebooks have enough classics to last several lifetimes. You don’t need anything else. People here and on reddit keeps complaining about typos in ebooks. Because no money, fired editors, fired proofreaders, shit OCR scan, AI slop, and other reasons. Supposedly, this is not an issue with Standard Ebooks. Because they actually give a fuck.

>>25434189kobo is the right choice, i've come to accept. less spyware than the kindle and more ubiquity than any other alternative to the kindle, which is important when you eventually need anything repaired.
>>25434189Epub is generally better as the text and such conforms to the ereader. PDF is only good for the original author formatting and you have a big enough reader screen.>>25434413You could pirate over at zlibrary. Just find the real link on the subreddit's wiki. You could direct download 5 books a day per IP address. This means that you could bypass the limit by using a VPN. Or just create an account/donate for more access per day.>>25434443Way less open than a Boox. Android with Boox software and a microSD card slot. Could download anything from the playstore or even sideload. I remember running Fate Stay Night on it through Kirikiroid2. Though I'll admit it's not water proof.
Kindle bros...I'm slowly getting used to reading on a kindle. Still think I'd prefer buttons but its getting easier...

>>25434480thoughts on the "go 7"?
>carta 1300 display>recessed screen>waterproof>page buttons>7" or larger screenwhy the FUCK is there not a single ereader that meets all of these criteria?
>>25434561I have the color 7 and I want the BW because it has the carta 1300. It urks me when I see the rainbow shimmy of Kaleido 3 on black and white manga and you have to turn up the brightness more much more than a carta 1300 device. I read Vagabond on my go 6 instead of my color 7 because the image was sharper, though of course its a BW manga typically. But you have to make sure that you actually have the habit of reading books on a device because these einks in general are like reading a flipbook in molasses.
Are there any screen degredation mechanisms to know about, like OLEDs for example?Like the default screen refresh rate is set to after every chapter, is there any reason not to change it to update after every page to avoid to appearance of ghosting?
>>25434710I don't think there is. Someone probably would have said something about it.I have mine to full refresh frequently and dedicate one of the hardware buttons to full refresh.I suppose the main reason you wouldn't want this is that it's just annoying to have a flashing screen every page turn where its really not needed. So you'd manage the settings to what you want. There's actually a fun trick you could do with the fact that its eink where you set the sleep mode to be an image with a transparent background so that you're last screen state is preserved with the sleep mode image over it. I haven't done it myself but I've seen some threads on it.

Kobo Clara BW or Pocketbook Verse Pro?I plan to jailbreak Kobo if it is better, but how would I know which version of the OS would be jailbreakable from purchase?

>>25434849Pocketshit if you want everything to be slow as fuck, Clara BW if you're poor as fuck, just get a normal Kobo Libra Color poor loser.
>>25434869You sound mad lmaoAlso, color has lower battery life, you might as well read on your phone since your attention span can't go beyond reading words.
Reading with the kindle has made me realize how untenable buying a base x4 would be, part of the entire reason I stopped reading physical books, is because if the light wasnt perfect, reading was borderline impossible or at the very least took more effort than is worth, I'm realizing a bit now why reading was easier as a child. I'd read at school, where the lights are basically perpetually on, even on a sunny day, but at home turning the lights on during the day just seems retarded.I actually don't understand X4 fans anymore, unless they're just perpetually reading in perfectly lit spaces. This isnt even about a "night time thing" anytime after 1 pm is not bright enough for most things without an artificial light unless your leaning into the angle of the sun constantly, and once youre making considerations like that, you're not even reading anymore.
>>25434865Do you have an e-ink device? If yes, are you happy with the functionality of the stock reader app? If also yes, then you don't need KOReader. KOReader is if you're autistic and want to be able to customize every little aspect of the reading experience or UI. That said, if you aren't happy with the stock app, KOReader is the only alternative you should consider. Other readers like Moon Reader Pro or Readest are good for phones or PC, but they aren't built from the ground up for e-ink displays like KOReader and will all have varying degrees of display and optimization issues.
>>25434849Seconding this.I'm torn between the two of these.
>>25434907I like reading on my bed. So light is also an issue. Either I need to buy a new smaller lamp or perhaps a reading sofa. Kindle backlight is the perfect solution.
Just got a used 32GB Oasis 3Only downside is the micro-usb bullshitI'll probably jailbreak it too
>>25434189>>25434212Yeah, public domain lit is a good place to actually start. Comes packed in for free, I was shocked that on my iPhone's book app was just a collection of over 100 free books, tons of classics.Obviously not actually the best versions, no annotated versions or anything, but it's a good place to start if you want to actually read.If you just want pop fiction though, just go on z-lib like everyone else.
>>25434940yes exactly
>>25434212Standard Ebooks is good, but they can still have issues. Their edition of Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" is based on Gutenberg's which is based on scans of the roughly edited first publication in Astounding Stories, which contains multiple typographic errors and even missing text. Later revisions exist with these errors/omissions corrected, but because the public domain status of these versions is questionable (which SE is autistic about) they cannot be used as the basis for corrections.
>>25435002Was this discussed somewhere? Because the changelog seems to show they fixed errors here and there: https://github.com/standardebooks/h-p-lovecraft_at-the-mountains-of-madness/commits/master
>>25434907>but at home turning the lights on during the day just seems retarded.Read outside.
babyduckGOD
Holy fuck anyone on a Kobo convert your epubs to kepubs it's so much betteralso unrelated but the fact that you can change the text alignment to justified is fucking based
>>25435165Yeah, I found a discussion here: https://groups.google.com/g/standardebooks/c/HOorCcIaqiA/m/ETgLDpJlCgAJSome of these that were simple typos were apparently fixed, but I know that #9 specifically was not as it relies on the work of a guy who created his own revised editions of Lovecraft's stories by painstakingly examining Lovecraft's original manuscripts. In theory the SE guys could do the same, but it'd be quite the undertaking I imagine. You can compare the SE version to the revised version hosted at https://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/mm.aspx
>>25435203It doesn’t seem this is Standard Ebooks’ fault. Original publications of Lovecraft has many typos, because reasons. Some pajeet (Joshi) tried to correct them. Standard Ebooks can’t use his corrections, because it’s not public domain. And no guarantee they are accurate anyways. Seems very reasonable. And it doesn’t mean other books on their website have the same issue. Sounds like you just hate Standard Ebooks.
>>25434561Love mine, I use the stock Boox reading app. The screen is really good indoors and outdoors, it's not too heavy, the page turning buttons are good. No complaints at all.

Also, if it could read current newspapers and articles, that would be cool too.I just don't want it to be too much of a non-ereader to the point where I might as well buy a tablet/another phone
whats all this about converting epubs? do i need to do that for my kindle? i havent had any problems besides finding it weird that piranesi doesnt seem to quite have chapters even though it has headings
>>25436939Wanting to read comics already puts you in the "buy a tablet" category simply because even colour ereaders are still somewhat lacking (in my opinion) for what most people desire.Honestly, I don't get why people read manga and comics on ereaders. I read them on my PC because of two page composition. But if you're insistent, just compare the limited selection of colour models and decide which one is best. My opinions are a bit more DRAMATIC but my ideal for comics is colours that pop. I also haven't looked at one in a few years so maybe they got better. By the by, what I mean by two page composition is this, how the author originally intended the manga/comic to be viewed which isn't really possible with tablets or ereaders of any kind without compromising image legibility severely.
These tiny readers are fucking retarded. Just use your phone at that point.
>>25437304really........why cant somebody say this for a tablet
Honestly I don't know how it happened. But my epub on KOreader randomly went from 1200 pages to 1070 pages. I didn't do anything with the font that I can remember and I checked and its still 22, but it was also 22 when it was 1200, and part of the reason I didnt raise it is because I didnt want anymore pages than I had to read on my phone. Not sure what actually happened, but now every chapter is like 3 to 6 pages shorter than usual. It's not a bad thing exactly, im just confused.

Don't even know how to return to a "default configuration" because I specifically unset any defaults once I realized that not all books need the same shit.
does anyone here own one of these xteink mini readers? or tried them out? would that be a good first e-reader theyre about 60 bucks for the smaller older version and 80 for the newest one which is slightly larger.
>>25438781I ordered an X4 Pro but it'll be my second e-reader along with a larger Boox Go. I don't think the size lends itself to bring your only e-reader unless you're planning on reading on the go more often than at home.
I've tried e-readers and I guess it's just not my cup of tea, I still prefer regular physical books
>>25438781I got an x3 (which is the smallest model) mid July. It's my first ereader so I can't say how it compares to others but I was surprised at how often I've been using it, read like 4 books on that thing since I got it, mostly at home but the size is great for when I'm away too.Like >>25440109 said I feel like it would be better using something a bit larger for at home reading but even with that in mind it's still surprisingly comfortable all things considered and the battery life is a dream. I charged it for the first time yesterday, not sure if that's standard with other models.
>>25437304>>25437326The point is the eink display. If you want eink that can fit in your pocket, then you go with the smaller readers.
>>25440766fuark, don't tempt me on xteink...
>>25434189EPUBs only. I've found PDFs can crash jailbroken ereaders.
>>25441490Clarification, I meant ereaders in general, as PDFs take up a lot more memory.
Somebody said it, and now I've been thinking about it forever and now realize why speed reading has felt oddly uncomfortable on my kindle, and have a better working theory for why people feel they can read more on the Xteinks....Narrow page margins actually might matter, even if superficial. The wider the amount of words on the screen, the more effort your eyes have to exert to take in all the information, and likely because ive been reading on phones for so long, by eyes arent used to the speed adjustment needed to accomplish that. Now that I consciously know that, I think I could get used to wider margins (I don't like inflated chapters counts and page counts, so im not narrowing the margins manually through koreader) But its something to keep in mind.

Ordered a kindle scribe, found a really good deal on refurbished. Don’t need the writing feature, just want a big screen for desk reading and sheet music, so hopefully it’s good. Should pay for itself in about two months of not buying books.
>>25443354Oh I assumed it was an Xteink thing. I bought an x3.
>>25438781Bought an x3 a month ago. It's an 11/10 for me. Crazy long battery life. It was at 97% when it arrived, now it's at 94% and I haven't charged it yet. I take it everywhere because it's so small. Only thing I don't like is that it's too small to clip on a book light, but that's not terribly important to me personally.

>>25443962Too late. I already bought it.
>>25444345But I do. That's the neat thing about formatting anon, you use whatever works for you. Personally I like a long visual pause between paragraphs, this book is not the best to showcase its usefulness but it helps a lot with books with really long paragraphs like 100 years of solitude
>>25444525Imho, zero spacing between paragraphs is a method to save paper anyways. Same with font size and other conventions. But they sell these rules as typographically-correct or “beautiful”.

>>25437781>>25434428Last I checked Libgen is still going.
>>25445554>a method to save paperYeah, that's the main reason why I switched to reading on a kindle. After reading a bit into it I learned that most publishers will do the bare minimum amount of work to fit as much text on a page while trying to adhere to traditional typography rules. After realizing that, I just couldn't stop noticing that a lot of my books have horrible formatting and it affected my reading experience in a very subtle, almost unnoticeable way.
>>25445775Libgen literally died. And now there's a fake libgen+ with more malicious ads.
>>25434849I daily drive a PB Verse Pro, can 100% recommend it. There's one schizo who keeps shitting up these threads with "PB is slow!!!" when it's the same exact screen as most 6-inch e-readers. Any font size over the minimum and it's unreadable.
>>25437774Like this, KOReader.Replicated it to be the same as a paperback of King in Yellow, then tweaked from there.Half-em paragraph spacing. tiny bit of margin, font size 18 (EB Garamond [serif] + Ysabeau [sans], they match), small word spacing/expansion, +0.5 font weight (after I took this photo).Status bar: book title, page/total pages, chapter title, chapter page/total chapter pages, battery, time.I should write out what patches and plugins I use, when I connect it to my PC again, so I can back up my settings.
>>25447826Interesting formatting. I really can't get used to font size that small, maybe its the fact that I have poor eyesight, but also im short sighted so it shouldn't matter that much. My eyes are sensitive in general, constantly rubbing them, and stuff, so conditions have to be really ideal for me to read now. I do like your set up because it means page count doesnt get inflated beyond the standardized amount, but it also makes it feel like reading takes forever, especially if you measure your progress by time spent on pages, and chapters.
Can anybody tell me what font weight does? Have a feeling that was the culprit for why my pages randomly shrank one day.
>>25447826>Status bar: book title, page/total pages, chapter title, chapter page/total chapter pages, battery, time.Did you use Bookend for your status bar? I kind of like having a status bar at the top too. But for a book with flowery chapter images like this, maybe itd be better not to.

>>25450029I just got a 6" Kobo Clara BW this week, my first e-reader, after previously having (well, I still have it, but I haven't used it much in a long time) an 8" Android tablet. I was skeptical of the 6" screen because my phone screen is at least nominally bigger than that. Now that I've seen it in person and gotten a chance to try it, I think the 6" e-reader is plenty large. It's something like the size of a mass-market paperback. It's also small enough to hold comfortably one-handed, although your 8" Kobo is probably lighter than my 8" Android tablet I mentioned earlier.

>>25450278The cheapest basic.>I’ve never used one, not sure how the cheap ones handle potential glare or reading in bright, sunny environments.Exactly the same as more expensive models. E-ink is, in essence, a screen with magnetic ink pulled to the top to display text. Without a frontlight (they're not backlit like LCDs), it functions basically a book.Xteink and the upcoming boox is a meme.>>25450793Tolino is rebadged Kobo aimed for the German market (connected to German bookstores), previous models (iirc up until the Libra generation) ran a different OS (modified android), modern Tolino is p much the same as Kobo. Not sure if the modern firmware differences impact Nickelmenu or KOreader/jailbreak installation compared to regular Kobo.
>>25451311>Tolino is rebadged Kobo aimed for the German market (connected to German bookstores)I live in the Netherlands, here it's connected to the Liber Libris store iirc. Not that I care really, since I would sideload everything regardless.>modern Tolino is p much the same as Kobo.Yes, but according to the manufacturer it does not support kepub, or at least it's not mentioned explicitly. With the Kobo as far as I have read sideloading an epub without converting to kepub first (which is little more than a few extra lines of header, as I understand it) means losing sa few things like page count. However since the Tolino does not use kepub at all, then I would expect this extra step not to be needed--is that correct?
>>25451480>which is little more than a few extra lines of header, as I understand itKepubs wrap every line in a span so you can start/skip to the specific lines, along with some other specific additions that mostly were rendered depreciated with the epub3 standard, years ago. You never needed to convert, but Kobo's reader engine purposefully gimps reading regular epubs.A quick google, Tolino Shine 5 runs regular Kobo firmware, so I -think- it should support kepub, as a github issue I found refers to installing nickelmenu on it. It also supports KOReader, so if you're going to sideload; install KOReader and don't bother with the inbuild reader.Heel eerlijk, koop wat goedkoper is, het boeit niet veel. Haal welke je leuker vind, geloof-digitaal heeft vaak leuke kortingen op Pocketbooks.

So from what I'm getting by browsing the webs between Kobo Clara BW vs Pocketbook Verse Pro is that:Kobo Clara BW>faster>better screen>replaceable/repairable partsPocketbook Verse Pro>more customization>a lot more file compatibility>better build quality>in general just absolute control over the deviceDecisions... might be leaning to PB because you can just boot it up without any accounts or whatever. However, I like having the chance of being able to replace parts of tech.I'm still undecided. Any anons know which one is more preferable?
>>25451765most people i think like the pocketbook but complain that it is that damn slowthat said, my jailbroken kindle feels very sluggish so i can't really comment. i have a 10th gen and it feels glacial outside of actually reading a bookKOreader probably does most of>>more customization>>a lot more file compatibility
I’m assuming the time left to read that ereaders estimate is just based on some global mean reading speed? Do any of them take the rate at which you’re reading a current book to make an actual projection?
>>25451868yeah most of them look at how fast it takes you to read a page or two then starts to averageif you read something with maps/images and flick through them, youd see the average go down
>>25451078Yep. The X4 would probably fit just fine on a pixel or iPhone or something with a horizontal camera sensor cluster, but my OnePlus has a fuck huge camera so that ain't happening. I think this will be a good call for me since then I can decide if I want the X4 pro with a backlight later. I wish they kept the buttons over the touchscreen though
>>25451703
>>25452035if given the option im getting as few words as possible on the screenwhy bother having it all cramped together if i dont have to
>>25451923>I wish they kept the buttons over the touchscreen thoughFrom what I can gather everybody used the side buttons more anyway, and theyre still there. So I don't really get all the performative complaining I'm seeing on social media. Maybe you genuinely used the bottom buttons so I'm not judging you specifically.
>>25443781I have a fully-grown ereader and reading light for bed. The tiny ereader is so I can read throughout the day instead of the 30-90 minutes I might have before bed and not carry around a whole ass ereader/book.
>>25434189I'm probably gonna be shit on, but I have a Remarkable 2 and I love the screen and writing feeling. All I'm missing is backlight, maybe color in certain situations. What's a good rec? The remarkable pro would fit except I heard the screen feels completely different. It's also expensive as sin.
Improved my formatting a bit.Changed font to one with bigger and thicker glyph size (EB Garamond + Ysabeau to NV Ancizar Serif+Sans), smaller font size.>>25451703>>25452122Yuck.>if given the option im getting as few words as possible on the screen>why bother having it all cramped together if i dont have toIf thats your logic, you might as well throw the fonts up so you see one word a page.Just admit you have bad eyesight.>>25451765>However, I like having the chance of being able to replace parts of tech.Well, you're not going to be able to do that, or need to, with either, really.Get whatever you like the look of better, and it seems you already have a preference.
>>25448349>First day with a kindle, finding that most of what I want is only available as a pdf on Anna’s. Are those online epub converters any good, and can they handle images?it's only problematic if you don't have koreader. you can fit to width and use landscape mode I think even on the regular reader though the lack of gestures might make the navigation a bit harder.I'm guessing you are reading math then don't convert. If they are simple pdfs like literature, the conversion in calibre actually works surprisingly well.
>>25434212Bibebook is pretty good for French classics too: https://www.bibebook.com/The project died a few years ago so nothing new is added, but they've got most the big hitters.

>>25434326I'm pretty sure it's because the displays are difficult to make. I had to return my Kobo Libra Colour twice before I got one without pinholes.
>>25452172Having been using mine today, I get it. Though I like the buttons as I can truly operate it with buttons ambidextrously so it's quite nice. I like the size. I'm sure the X4 is a bit more comfortable and roomier but the flip side of it is that this is totally fine. I'm missing what, two lines of text? Big Woop honestly. This is an easy throw in my pocket and forget device. I have a kobo libra otherwise. I like that I can talk to my Calibre Web instance. Had to publicly expose it since I don't run it off my home wifi. Decided to throw on 1984 to reread because I wanted something easy that I read already and figured "what the hey" since I wanted to see if I liked the form factor or this was gonna become a quick seventy dollar paperweight >Also post this to my friends and let them flame that I'm reading pleb garbage kek My initial impression is I think I already love this little device. It's just so simple. I like that I can carry it everywhere and just read if I had downtime. I hate reaching for my phone when I'm just hanging around. Yeah I would rather read but I'm not always bringing a book or my Kobo. So I think this is a cool thing to read books that maybe I'm less interested in having long read sessions to understand. I think nonfictions, biography, or just mystery and horror or laid back fiction seems perfect for this. From purely a standpoint of life, I like that it's something that encourages me to slow down and enjoy the moment of just being more. Can't explain it, but I stopped to get some coffee before an engagement, I had like fifteen minutes, so instead of just going to the destination and pissing on my phone, I just kinda hung out sipping coffee and reading. Imho X3 seems perfect as a pocket device, but X4 is probably a little better if you carry a bag around most days. Both are pocketable sure, but something about how compact this device is just feels right to me.
Is color e-ink worth considering yet? Would be handy for textbooks and books with charts.
>>25453849I mean, we have textbooks that don't need the use of colors. Like from math, physics, CS. And they look like garbage on kindle. Part the small size, part refresh rate, part typesetting, and many other reasons. Technical textbooks are just too niche, so no one is motivated to improve the situation.

I love my Boox Note Air 3. The larger screen was worth the extra cash even if the DPI was not the highest. For books either project Gutenberg, I host a local mirror on my home server, or Anna's archive.FYI I am reading Pale Fire at the moment.
>>25434582>>waterprooflol be reasonable, this is all chinese shit in a new industry that doesn't have a lot of r&d money backing it
>>25454156>Boox Note Air 3Patrician. I have the Air 2. Worth it to read and annotate pdf easily.
When my Libra H2O finally dies are there any good Kobo monochrome models left? Feels like they gimped the displays to get colour which is a meme for most literature.
>>25454701Clara BW >>25437774also literally in the OP
install koreader if you haven't
I don't know what one to get, I was thinking the boox go 7 but it costs 400 dollarydoosI just want one good for books, for manga and you can simply drag and drop files into the system
Are any of the kindles actually worth it, or are they too restricted?
The only thing I miss about kindle is that KFX let me set total page number. In koreader I have to play a bit with the "characters per page"
>>25456654The latest paperwhite is the best b/w ereader on the market right now, but you have to jailbreak it to make it actually usable. You can still read epubs on it without jailbreaking but you'll be limited in typesetting customization options
>>25457001>The latest paperwhite is the best b/w ereader on the market right nowThe X4*
>>25456894Page numbers aren't a good indicator of length now, desu. Word count is a much beter indicator, because everyone can change their formatting to whatever they want. If I set my font and margins to half-blind mode, the page number goes up. Physical books are largely printed in the same sizings so that's much more consistent.KOReader could use a better auto-calculation of pages, I agree.>>25456654If they're on sale, they're frequently the cheapest on the market. The screens are the same as other brands. You just need to jailbreak them.>>25456566Pocketbook's are just open file system.
Tried KOReader but having to dedrm Kobo books and transfer in Calibre a pain, much faster than standard software and footnotes work properly on preview which is buggy on standard.
>>25440109>I ordered an X4 Prohey sorry for the late reply anon, i forgot about the thread. did the x4pro arrive yet? how is it? thats the one with the backlight right? and yeah i initially thought i would use it for reading on the go and testing the waters first with a cheaper device since i never had an e-reader>>25440766checkedthanks for replying, i see so the reader replaces books for you at home?! great to know that the battery lasts for a long time.>>25443710thanks anon, i planed to use it on the go aswell but having a backlight could come in handy aswell, the other anon before mentioned the great battery life on it, according to some youtube reviews the newer x4 model has quite a lot less durability in that department, but is larger and with backlight but also costlier. i tend to go for the x3 for now.>>25443781good point anon, although i plan to use it as a on the go reader it would maybe be smarter to spend 20$ more for the x4 in the long run to be more versatile.
>>25459852>good point anon, although i plan to use it as a on the go reader it would maybe be smarter to spend 20$ more for the x4 in the long run to be more versatile.I've heard the x4 sort of had problems in the sun too anyway, something about the sun messing up the eink, but i could be wrong.
>>25456654A few months ago I bought an Amazon 11th Gen Signature Paperwhite for $80 used directly on the Amazon site. It was out of stock, but when I refreshed the page like 2 days later there was one available. Came with an outdated firmware so I could jailbreak it easily. Well worth the money after that.Try to camp the webpage for a few weeks and see if any pop up.
