>>25435416I am around chapter 40 currently. The philosophical stuff is a bit hamfisted and it just pulled one of the classic xianxia slop tropes where the protagonist does someth that has 30 different meanings and his opponent somehow was able to immediately recognize that deeper meaning behind his actions.Still the story has some real soul and hopefully the sloppiness will get ironed out over time.If you want to talk underrated xianxia though grasping evil is definitely it. The start might even be more sloppy than RI but it delves into taoism the most out of an cultivation novel I have read later on, and there is some real soul as well.

>>25435661Maybe it's a well known thing in China, but to me the half the corpse in the box and the underlying meaning behind it was pretty mind blowing the first time I read it.
>reading A World Worth Protecting>Wang Baole is the son in law of Wang Lin>Wang Lin was the MC of Renegade ImmortalFeels silly because Baole's parents are complete non-cultivating randoms on Earth. You'd think you'd make sure your wife's parents were taken care of if you were a strong cultivator. And>thinking about Coiling Dragon>call my dog Finley Linleyhehe
>>25435846I never read that, but didn't Wang Lin get raped in his own book, I don't remember if she gave birth to a kid though
>>25435846>>25435918The novel is a slog, but in donghua wang lin never fathered any children (except that one time when he turned part of his soul into his son well sort of, he died later)
Serious question. I understand all of you are ESL like me. But is there western literary novel that has the good parts of Reverend Insanity? Smart protagonist, weak MC, smart antagonist, schemes. Stuff like that, but better written at prose and plot level. For asian stuff, the closest thing would probably korean murim novels, especially return of mount hua. That one is just schemes after schemes. I read Cyrion, and it has hints of chinese (web)novel, smart MC too. But not enough. It was honestly a coincidence I think, it’s closer to Agatha Christie’s books. Because for britishers, smart MC means detectives.Google love to recommend Traitor Baru and Locke Lamore. But it looks like they are part of longer series, and the subsequent books aren’t as good.
>>25436157I can't think of one that has all the good parts of RI. You might enjoy:>Dao of the Bizarre Immortal>Immortality Through Array Formations>Regressor's Tale of Cultivation (not much scheming)>MAYBE Calculating Cultivator (big maybe it's a pretty miserable read because the author is a zero-sum economy autist, but it's finished)

Is Gifted's version of LitRPG going to be the new Archmage craze?I feel like he's achieved in creating a system where numbers go up a lot without making the protagonist too powerful because the numbers going up are within a mini-objective that only gives a couple of stat points per level on top of a 100 point base.
I have come across a korean novel with a transsexual female lead for the second time now, and I am deeply disappointed in the gooks. And no it was not gender bender.

>>25436334There is not going to be any 'craze' because the novel is garbage. It doesn't introduce anything new or original so there really isn't anything to be excited about. It's hot atm only because the first 10-15 chapters were ok. Give it a few more chapters and people will start dropping it, of course there will always be autists who are specifically into trash novels that will keep alive somewhat but even they aren't the majority of RR audience.
>>25436365Anything that insanely successful that insanely fast starts a craze, because authors see it and try to imitate. Quality doesn't matter.See:MLA
>>25436354While I understand that, chinese and japanese novels have yet to hit me in the face with a plot of a female lead who happens to be a cross-dressing man with serious gender dysphoria, which the protagonist helps by giving a magical potion that cuts his dick off, before joining the harem and becoming a true female lead. I had to specify it was not gender bender because I don't think that counts, and it's not direct like this. The second novel was even worse since the protagonist "enlightens" the female lead about her true gender because she was a man(born with a dick) who was supposed to be a woman, and I have to read a whole arc of pseudo homosexuality with the female lead(male) constantly drooling over the protagonist while reminding himself he is not a faggot over and over until succuming and becoming a woman. None of these were smut by the way, they were serious novels.
>>25436369What is there to imitate exactly? Have you read past the chapter 14 (latest chapter posted on rr) ?

I constantly see Lord of the Mysteries, Reverend Insanity and Shadow Slave, presented as this top 3 of webnovels. I read Reverend Insanity and overall liked it, despite the bloat and sub-par prose. I tried to read Shadow Slave and got 600 chapters in. While I like some of the ideas, I can't tolerate the childish protagonist and the formulaic way of writing that is presented. Maybe its a me problem. That said, is Lord of the Mysteries actually good or is it overhyped like RI and Shadow Slave? Are there any actually good webnovels? I'm debating whether to even try LotM at all, since the protagonist, from what I've seen, seems far less interesting than RI's. Does it make up that deficit in some other way?

I reached the 3rd book, at some zombie or corrupted island, and was like fuck this shit. It's such a typical way to write a smart genius MC. It was super annoying especially since I was reading it around the time I was watching the Stranger kdrama. That kdrama MC made wrong guesses, got misled, made several plausible possible explanations throughout the show, in an intelligent way. Not just asspulls and perfect guesses out of nowhere. And when I complained about it, some randos would just say the later books will explain it. It's because some god or something was helping him along the way. Doesn't make it good writing imo.

I grew up reading light novels. How can I translate the LN writing style to prose that won’t turn off western readers? For example, let’s say I start with something like this:I was in the middle of tearing my hair out over homework when—BANG!The door slammed open, followed by a sharp, bubbly voice."Anon, let's hang out!"The speaker was a tall, athletic girl with shiny black hair cropped close to her neck, dressed in a sleeveless running top and joggers. As usual, she let herself into my room without waiting for an answer."Go away. I'm busy.""Huh? Don't tell me you still haven't finished your homework."She leaned over my shoulder to inspect the math problem I'd been wrestling with for the better part of an hour. Up close, I could see a faint flush on her tan cheeks and beads of sweat tracing down her boyish face.A wave of strong, sweaty odor hit me, and I scrunched my nose."Ew. You reek. Get away from me." I recoiled, pinching my nostrils shut. She let out an indignant snort and drove a fist straight into my arm."OW! What was that for?!""Hmph! For your information, I'm sweating because I finished my homework ages ago and still had time for a run. So? Do you want my help or not?"I rubbed my throbbing arm and glared at her. This violent gorilla was my next-door neighbor and childhood friend, Tomboy-chan. She was the ace of the school's track team and a certified math genius on top of it. Some people really did get all the gifts.Every time she tutored me, she wore that same superior smirk that made my blood boil.I wanted so badly to throw her out of my room, but…I looked down at my barely touched papers, then out at the dark cityscape beyond the window. I sighed."...Fine.""What was that? I couldn't hear you." Tomboy-chan leaned in, the corner of her mouth creeping up smugly.God, she's so annoying."...Yes. Please help me with my homework.""Hehe! >>25436756Good point. One of the more annoying aspects of amateur writing is the infallible nature of the MC's. Often the best moments are when MC's, and subsquently the reader, get hoodwinked. RI is guilty of this a lot, but one of its better moments was in the Three Kings arc, where Bai Ning Bing betrays Fang Yuan and takes him by surprise. It was a great moment.I'd love to read a story with a protagonist somewhat similar to Fang Yuan, but more flawed and less robotic. A more human Fang Yuan would be perfect.

Commissioning art of my characters. Do you think RR would bitch if I used this as my cover? Also, for my release schedule I’m going to drop my first twelve chapters at once, along with doing an ad, along with advertising this new story on my old story (which has about 400 followers). Hopefully that will kick things off to a good start

>>25438304It works like Chinese censorship, "we don't know how to define it, but you know when you see it."
>>25438334Anons is action based. The two examples I gave has one with two girls on a bed and the other one the girl has breasts bigger than her head and a massive cleavage..
>>25435846OH YEAHA while back I made a post about how Earth had been homogenized in AWWP and someone replied saying of course because they're all Chinese. There was a comment in the webnovel many chapters later that said everyone came from an Eastern country roflmao haha
>>25438304>>25438334The solution is really simple: use a placeholder cover at launch, get approved, do the launch, put up the real cover. At that point the moderators will most likely just ask anon to change the cover, AT WHICH POINT he can say okay what's over the line, I'll have my artist change THAT PART, and maybe they don't like the butt but they're fine with the boobs so he can easily put the title over that and advertise his patreon saying patrons can download the title-less cover art on that site. The key to this is anchoring bias. Once a fiction is approved for release, the anchor point is that it's already approved. Overcoming that bias requires a strong reason. Before it's approved, the anchor point is that it's NOT approved, and so any little reason not to approve it seems stronger.Do not abuse this power because if you do the RR mods might change their policy on cover art uploads and nobody wants that. Personally I don't even think it crosses the line as is, but one never knows.
To the surprise of nobody, Echoes didn't win the Honeyfeed contest. With that, Echoes is free from its Honeysneed prison.https://www.honeyfeed.fm/novels/30962I have 80k or so written, and volume 1 is planned to be 120k to 150k.If anyone wants to try a non-isekai, here's your chance. I might drop a few more early draft chapters if somebody likes it.I was thinking about a simultaneous RR and Honeysneed release when it's ready, but HF seems pretty dead. For two months, I had basically zero engagement.I wrote a long paragraph what Echoes is about but I then threw the whole thing out. Watering it down, it's a character-centric story with scifi elements that is neither action nor slice of life. MC avoids action, and a large portion of the story is dedicated to his daily life. This is by intent. It's a down to earth story with relatively small stakes, not because the stakes are meaningless, but because they're overshadowed by the world at large. Is it worth even shrugging your shoulders over a few lives after billions are dead? The premise is basically a NEET who did the math (much like everyone else) and figured out that working a regular job is just not worth it. You can commit a theoretically victimless crime and end up walking out with multiple years' worth of salaries on your back, IF you walk out. The if is the trick. On the story itself, I do want to dare call it 'cozy', but I don't think it can be - everything is just way too wrong to call it that fairly. If you want to be disdainful and call Anomalous Particle Adaptation 'magic', then it's urban fantasy, with scifi, action, drama, romance, and slice of life elements. If you want to read about a greedy loot goblin and cute girls, like burgers, like tacticool, and like light scifi, you might like it.

>release a chapter that's a little sexual, but doesn't have actual sex >sudden drop to sub 3 stars what the fuck is wrong with royal road readers?
>>25438762Context?
>>25438762horny writing is very hard to pull off. 10x more true if its not a normally horny book. you made your readers cringe and they dropped your book and left an annoyed rating on the way out. unfortunately, that's on you not them, that's what the rating system is for
How strict is royal road actually? Because reading their terms of service they basically say they have the right to censor, ban, and penalize for basically anything their staff personally find offensive.
>>25438762I've had decent success with asking readers to rate. Not every chapter, but every month or so I'll say we're close to X milestone and ask people to leave a rating (milestones are purely the number of ratings and reviews, it's not rating manipulation). You can't please everyone and shouldn't try to do that. Instead, find the people you're pleasing already and ask them to rate. They're more likely to rate positively.
>>25438783Not terribly strict, but the policy is broad to give them maximum wiggle room. Your best bet is to look at what most people are doing with recent releases and stay on that level.
>>25438707Explain?
>>25438762People don't want to read smut, regardless of whether there is a lot of it or very little.
>>25438841Given that smut is super popular everywhere it isn't explicitly banned, I would say you are wrong about people not wanting to read it. That said, RR is a place where it's explicitly banned. They don't want RR to become taken over by romantacy. So it's reasonable gate keeping. That or it was too unexpected. I think if it actually fit the story the readers wouldn't have minded so much.
>>25438681>>25438707>>25438823>>25438667It’s more fantasy horror than smut, I just like attractive women

>>25438938Half of novelupdates is smut. Half of scribblehub too. Most WebNovel stories contain it to some extent. Americans are the prudish ones. Just compare American (or Canadian) video games to Korean video games.
>>25438935It's basically place with high Qi concentration. A lot of cultivators also trap the shit out of these caves and prepare Qi condensation formations and spread trinkets around to suck even more Qi. Yes they live (meditate) in those caves. Theynre not cavemen, more like living mummies
>>25438945royalroad is not novelupdates nor scribblehub, it's not the same demographics : novelsupdate was overtaken by gays and trannies and scribblehub was always female and smut themedKorean and chinese novels rarely describe sex scenes and Inve read a lot of them. Get good
>>25438963Royal Road is mostly an American/Anglo and then German audience.
>>25436602I'm writing one that is heavily progression based (college kid to marine general war hero) but far more like a western sci fi military novel (ie starship troopers) than not. I wasn't going to do any of the litrpg shit but I ended up veering into autistic tank battles and the logistics thereof so there might be some number-and-status-screen porn in there anyway. Otherwise I'm not really interested in following tropes or rpg-imitative shit. I also have a fantasy story about a fantasy mercenary learning to deal with his PTSD and hopelessness while guarding (which means fighting fuck tons of orcs) a caravan of settlers across a steppe plagued by monsters but idk if I'll finish or try to publish it. What specifically would you like to read?t. White American who doesn't even like anime very much
>>25438667it gives off the same effect as a having a harem in a story doesfucking coomersreminds me of an old fanfic i read that was pretty good, until his harem reached 4 women and the next 60k words written were interactions between them with no plot progression.i fucking hate coomers
I WILL REVIVE THE SUPERHERO + PROGRESSION FANTASY GENRE AND SURPASS SUPER SUPPORTIVE, MLA, AND GIFTED
>>25438973your progression is not personal power based? you serious? good luck i guessi specifically would like to read actual progression fantasy
>>25438973I don't have anything specific in mind, although I like fantasy. It's fine as long as it's easier to digest than a "real book". And what I dislike about litrpgs is not the rpg aspect, but the way the story is told, it's as if the author had an interesting idea for a new character for a D&D session and decided to make a webnovel out of it. They don't really feel like real stories to me. As others anons have answered me, it's either this or a book, there's no middle ground like easy to read fantasy webnovels.
I cannot read a novel anymore unless I see a harem tag on it. What to do?
>>25439220There's no qi or whatever but the MC grows psychologically, physically, and amasses a kind of small army then gets commissioned into the real army etc. and so on. The progression is marked by external signs of his successful ambition (climbing ranks and eventually building something like an empire). I'm kind of ripping off Red Dawn (the 80s movie) for the first part. Idk if it'll do well but I've read some similar stuff on there and I don't think there's a market for it anywhere else.
>>25439278you need to get a lobotomy

>>25439513yes, they do:>>>25438783>basically anything their staff personally find offensive.Just follow this simple rule, retard.
>>25439513So what is the problem, retard???
Imagine a progfantasy story. The MC wakes up as a kid in an unfamiliar world. To understand the world better he goes to school and studies hard. He learns many wondrous and magical things until he graduates. After graduation he goes on temporary missions to earn some money since further progression is expensive. He meets a girl during this. They hit it off and get into a relationship. Eventually MC finds himself a permanent mission that he can constantly "clock in" on to earn rewards. He keeps working hard at it until one day he has saved enough to buy a house and propose to the girl.
>>25439582Progfantasy except MC wakes up wondering where did his childhood go and avoids clocking in, only clocks in to keep a roof over his head.
>>25439582>He meets a girl during this. They hit it off and get into a relationship.I would drop your story right there. Why do authors think that every isekai/litrpg/progression story with a protagonist trasnported from another world has to develop (devolve) into romance? If I am reading about somebody who was sent to a new world and is now exploring and learning magic, why would I want this turn into romance?
>>25439657who hurt you?
>>25439661What do you mean?
>>25439657It's fantasy because he gets a job and a girlfriend. The rest of what I described is just real life.
>>25439582Sure. Now give me a reason to actually read this.
>>25439657I forgot to finish my post:It's human nature to look for companions and intimacy. It's weird and unusual if they don't.People go on a vacation to another country or city and will often find companionship there. A permanent trip to another world is almost guaranteed to have it 'devolve' into that.
>>25439657>Why do authors think that every isekai/litrpg/progression story with a protagonist trasnported from another world has to develop (devolve) into romance?
>>25439736That may be the nature of an average person from the masses. The protagonist, who died and by some random chance, one in quadrillion, managed to not have his soul scrubbed and instead drifted through the multiverse into a new world (and in the process glimpsed of something even beyond our existence), is not an average person. Arriving in a new world with that knowledge and experience, a world where things like magic exist and possibilites are endless but then acting like an ordinary person with ordinary goals and expectations goes against all logic and reason.
>>25439756If an attractive woman threw herself at your feet I'm sure you would reject her you dickless retard.
>>25439761If you want to write smut or romantasy then do just that and upload it to amazon or scribblehub
>>25439776People love romance subplots and you being a little faggot won't change that.
>>25439780The authors are just too dumb to write anything meaningful and develop a story in an interesting way. Usually around chapter 10 they have resort to padding and filler (romance).
>>25439780No they don't. Romanceslop has its readers, but you won't blow up into a mega success if your story has romance. Thousands will skip
>>25439820Billions will read.
Is it better if the story stays focused on a single well fleshed out setting or is it better if after every major arc to move on to a different setting?
>>25439820Explain the success of Headless Over Heels, then.
>>25439820Romance is literally the most popular genre that is outselling everything else by a very wide margin. You are ether just being argumentative or you are comically ignorant.
>>25439836>settingWhat?
>>25439843The place (and time period) the story takes place.
Romantasy is the most successful subgenre of fantasy, to the point of there being very little other fantasy still being published. It's not popular because no one will read it. Harlequin books? Never caught on. No one's ever read smut in their lives. In point of actual fact no one has ever heard of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Cao Cao, because that's actually the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and thus illegible.

>>25439852Women won't read your webnovel. I'm pretty sure men won't either.
>>25438935>>25438951Exactly what anon said. The premise is that it's an enclosed safe space where no one can bother you with high concentrations of qi. Although it depends from case to case, they are for the most part meant for you to cultivate in. They are not supposed to be an ideal living environment, they are supposed to be an ideal cultivation environment.

>>25439839Yes, in published fiction, fanfic, etc. We're in the web novel thread though, obviously that anon meant romance isn't big in WNs. Deliberately being disingenuous, or just retarded? Call it
>>25440574Reminds me of the chapter in Ave Xia where the main character is contemplating how he's going to need months of undermining this evil city governor's base to topple him and remove him from power, then this higher cultivation level girl that ran into him whose dao happens to be justice just grabs him, flies to the city, drops through the roof of the palace and orders the guy to surrender then proceeds to slam a giant ice fist onto him. It sounds silly but it was so cathartic with how generally slow paced the novel is, one of the more satisfying xianxia moments.
>>25440599Out of all the terrible writing in that WN, I can't understand the insistence on making the girl be a total bombshell. It looks so forced.
>>25440501are there any reincarnation stories where the MC becomes a parricide out of his ingratitude and malice?
>>25440613It's lame.
>>25440756It's three paragraphs of nothing importantAll books have random nothingness like thisOr what's lame about it? It's just fucking nothing lol
>>25440659I know that's both for comedy and to illustrate how the cultivation world works (individual power above everything), but that still sounds very dumb.
>>25440762The whole chapter is like that, the entire story is like that. >Looking between Mum and Gramps, I tried to find the words to explain the secret I had held tight for so long — but I kept coming up blank. Why does this need to be stated? Either fucking explain or don't. Remember mc already lived a life on earth before being reborn in a new world. Why does he act like he mentally a five year old?>If I had just come clean about the Path of Soulstealing when I was younger, maybe this whole situation could have been avoided.>if I hadThis is even more unnecessary and totally redundant. >Mum simply smiled at me encouragingly, as loving as ever. I hoped by the time this conversation was over that she wouldn’t be looking at me differently with her heart-shaped face and striking blue eyes. She is his mother, why is he describing her like that? Wtf?Trash novel, a literal garbage.
>>25440808Because that's the Gifted subgendre. Mommy-likes
This shit is rancid even by web novel standards, how the fuck is this doing well.
>>25440808>Why does he act like he mentally a five year old?>a literal garbageuh oh stinky esl
>>25440857So, how old is the kid in this?"
>>25440857>how the fuck is this doing well.I want to know this too because it's not doing well it's doing better than any web novel everThe patreon is up to $17,000 a month. The story has been out for 8 days. It's going to smash through every record by a fuck ton.
>>25440864>>25440857Are webnovels just newest mafia money laundering scam that I wasn't smart enough to catch onto?
>>25440859I was phoneposting
You smelly nerds call everything garbage, without exception
>>25440948I am garbage.
>>25440905Yeah kinda. But there are people willing to throw money around. Fish where the fish are and all that. Even my mediocre webnovel makes about $400/month. It only pays for food and energy drinks but it's nice.I'm mildly hopeful stubbing and taking the first parts to KU will bring in even more money but I dunno. If I could get to $2k/mo I'd be fully covering all my regular expenses. If you're willing to write to market there's never been a better time in history to be a fledgling independent author. The barriers to entry are basically nothing but the time actually spent writing and uploading.
i've almost read 2000 chapters of shadow slave but i've gone from reading like 20 to even 100 chapters a day to reading like 1 chapter a week cause every time i open the current chapter i get bored after reading the first sentence. I still am interested in the series so i was considering just skimming the story from now on but i'm very autistically adamant on reading every sentence when it comes to reading cause of OCD or something. It feels like cheating and not actually engaging with the story right and not feeling the payoffs as much
>>25441079>and not actually engaging with the story right and not feeling the payoffs as muchIf I couldn't skim I would just not read web serialsPacing is atrocious in serials, for very obvious reasons
>>25441085you're right, it sucks that a cool setting is being milked like this, but based on the antarctica arc whenever i get really bored with the story G3 can still turn it around so i'm just forcing myself to keep going and hoping that he's still somewhat writing with intent
>>25441050>Even my mediocre webnovel makes about $400/monthi sometimes forget there are successful writers in this threadwhy are you even in this thread anyway? are you here to give advice or do you expect to learn something from the other posts?
>>25441147I'm here for the conversation of course. Sometimes I give advice. I post much less now that the thread is infested with mentally ill weirdos and stalkers.
>>25441154>now/wng/ had a persistent spreadsheet of its authors and their works in its OP until like a month ago
>>25441160That wasn't even the problem. It was people who posted and then some stalker would go out of his way to find them despite them not wanting to be associated with 4chan. That asshole is still around. Then the spreadsheet german sperged out and quit when public opinion turned against the doxxing behavior. And good riddance.
Why do successful authors mostly have beards, and are fatWhere are the ripped authors? Will going to the gym negatively impact my writing quality?
>>25441340cocopi is a slender, beardless woman with big boobs and fat pussy lips.
>>25441340>and are fatIt's a deeply sedentary job, most office workers are fat too.>GymMost people aren't ripped, extract yourself from the social media delusion. Normal people don't look like they "go to the gym", you basically have to use steroids to meet that standard in this diseased age.
>>25441350>and fat pussy lips.Is this attractive to degens?
>>25441367stop replying seriously to bored desperate attention seekers, they're what killed this general to start with
>>25441340>where are the ripped authors?Right here. Ripped and based.
>>25440613>tried to find the words>coming up blank>hindsight was perfect >gnawing away at me>heart shaped face >striking eyesThese are all literary cliches.
>>25441445you might be ripped but you're also low reader if so
>>25441489>literary cliche>wngwhere the FUCK do you think you are, you actual retard?
>>25440864Where are you getting $17k/month?
>>25441527paid members times like .85 or .9which is most patreons with a 10 dollar tier
>>25440905Probably. There's nothing organic about any of this. When you look at recent releases list, like 95% of stories posted all day have flat out 0 followers, 0 ratings, less than 100 views, and no comments. And then out of nowhere comes some dude who crosses thousands in a couple of days, despite being the exact same generic "dude goes to be op in another world" slop as the rest of them? Suuure, nothing to see here
>>25441555breaking out of the flood of slop is a real problemthat said this is the worst possible moment to seethe about it because he's an established authoryou just come off schizo here
srsly, what other winnie is so fucking peak?

>>25441596You're like half the posts in the thread
What would Spectral Soul do in this situation?
>>25441601>it could just be one turbo ill anon keeping it uphas been the case for months
>every post I dislike was made by the same anonschizophrenia
>>25441624he admitted it and I believe him

What would Giant Sun do in this situation?
It's bizarre how alwaysrollsaone is still using AI slop covers for A Soldier's Life. The amount of money he's lost from having those covers is probably greater than what it would've taken to hire an artist.
An inherently violent man isekai'd to a world that literally does not know war or even violence. Murder is literally unheard of. Accidental manslaughter is the worst thing you can do.The story wouldn't be what you think it would be about.Yes or no?
