A Trade of Blood, Shadow of the Leviathan #3 - Robert Jackson Bennett (2026)

A Trade of Blood has at least four meanings: murder, marriage, cattle ranching, and slavery. All four of these involve biological manipulation. The biopunk aesthetic continues to be an influence on everything. At times there were biological versions of what's commonly seen in cyberpunk works. One character even has a data port on the back of his neck that he attaches a biological data cable into. This makes me wonder how biologically advanced the innermost parts of the empire may be. There's so much that's just so cool and fun. I love that each book deepens my appreciation of the setting.

The plot is a murder mystery in which the implications spiral ever more outwards to where it could cause the collapse of the empire's way of life. Solving that mystery before the characters isn't what I'm interested in, though most readers should be able to if they're paying attention.

What I most enjoyed is how I imagined it all to be. The scenes were a visual spectacle and the atmosphere was superb. There's a constant sense of ambient horror that occasionally comes into sharp and disturbing focus. This was especially the case for two locations. The forest of Sapirdad has many elder mysteries, which includes among much else: non-Euclidian statues, the constant sense that there's something just outside your peripheral vision, mind-altering botanical pheromones, and an unshakable of foreboding dread. The flensing halls were rendered as a place where unspeakable horror was routine and obscene crimes against nature were mundane. I was impressed by how sinister, depraved, and monstrous it was made to be through environmental description alone.

As for Din's amorous pursuits, there's a single guy who holds his interest this time. Din may be incapable of not becoming involved with anyone who shows reciprocal interest. That seems like something that'll eventually get him into a lot of trouble. There isn't any sex on page, though there are a few descriptions of affection and being in bed afterwards.

If you had any doubt what Bennett meant by anything he wrote, then his author's note at the end would dispel it. The what, how, and why are all there and explained in a clear and straightforward manner. To his credit, I felt his ideas were integrated well and didn't come across as heavy handed.

This isn't a trilogy, and Bennet reiterates that this series will be of indefinite length. I don't have any problem with that, but it does affect how each book is structured. There's minimal progression towards any kind of overarching plot and character development is lessened. This is another self-contained story and I expect the next one will be as well. I was mildly concerned with the second book, though given what Bennet has done with this one and what he says in the author's note, I feel confident that the series is on a good and stable path from here on out.

Based on the goodreads reviews I've read of it (and reviews I've read of one of this authors past series) he's a garbage writer, and the books are also for garbage retards, who want strictly exactly what they want, and nothing else.

You're in luck. I went even further with the comment I posted afterwards. Enjoy.

A Trade of Blood was the reason I began requesting books from Netgalley again. I didn't want to wait any longer to read it and you don't have to. I'm glad that I did because this is the best novel published in 2026 that I've read.

As of August 3rd, the books is at 836 ratings and 692 reviews with a 4.64 average rating. That's amazing and yet I understand why, as I've given it 5 stars. The score will go down, though I expect not by all that much.

The Tainted Cup won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2025. It was the obvious choice of the nominees to win and it did. A Drop of Corruption is a nominee for Best Novel for 2026. Again, I believe it's the obvious choice. Next year in 2027, A Trade of Blood will be a nominee, and yet again it will surely be the obvious choice. That'd tie Bennett with Jemisin for the most consecutive wins for Best Novel. Might he even go for 4?

For any french reader here, I have finished Le Conte de l'Assassin from the series Le Chevalier Aux Epines (The Assassin's Tale from The Knight of the Thorns).

Pretty mitigated feeling. Writing-wise there's no discussion that Jaworski is perhaps the best french author when it comes to writing the internal monologue of a complete and utter bastard. 75% of the book's enjoyment comes from simply listening to what Don Benvenuto has to say (if you haven't read the book, basically take a political novel set in a land of old-fashioned knight and serfs and drop a cold-hearted cynical faux-italian hitman in it) about his circumstances and the people around him. It's very rare to see a story about a criminal that doesn't end up romantizing crime itself or making the MC some kind of Robin Hood figure or, on a completely opposite direction, a martyr to the common morality of mankind. None of that shit here, this is a truly machavellian work of fiction.

Having said all that, it's a damn fucking shame that half the bloody book (and it's a decently sized brick by itself) is a flashback from another perspective to the event of the first book. The simple fact is that you learn very little of value and the real meat of the story only starts to happen 60% through the thing. Since Benvenuto is not privy to a lot of what's happening behind the scene a lot of what's going on goes over his head. It's also very unclear (and I'm not completely sure that's by design) what exactly he intends to do at the very end.

Overall I will of course pick up the sequel, because that's some good shit either way, but the rythm problem really tempered my enthusiasm. It felt like Jaworski tried to recreate Gagner la Guerre with half the meat and no sauce on top (though a few scenes worked really well, the glutton's ring in particular worked for me)

It's a 5/10. A very overhyped book by people who don't read.
And yes, if you want to read it you should get the Penguin edition, because at least this version went through an editor, leading to several chapters being streamlined/modified.

qntm is a pantser, but not a very good one. Therefore, the book is rather disappointing. The main concept is good if derivative, but it doesn't live up to its premise.
Some plot points will seem more important than they should and will be resolved in a wet fart.
There's a specific part of the story that deserved to be developed a lot more but wasn't.
The ending is "power of love"-tier.

It could have been a whole lot better, but you know, it's fine. It's... meh.

It's fine not to like a book or author for whatever reason, but you've arrived at some extremely strong conclusions with effectively no information. That's bizarre.

It's Nero Wolfe through the lens of fantasy and has a really great setting

I only read the first one but really liked it. Definitely not garbage writing, and it does something very different from other contemporary fantasy so I have no clue what you're trying to say with that last bit. I guess it's an idea that *feels* like it should be an obvious match, but to my knowledge there's very, very little that mixes mystery and fantasy, let alone the style you get from Nero or Holmes.

>It's fine not to like a book or author for whatever reason, but you've arrived at some extremely strong conclusions with effectively no information. That's bizarre.
If you knew what I read, and didn't have the proclivities for the type of generic garbage anime fans do, you'd understand. Everything has its trope. By "trope" I mean, the desire to fulfill some preconceived notion of something, thats familiar and intuitive first and foremost, over crafting a natural and organic world/set of characters. The problem with tropes for me ultimately can be reduced to the contrivance they often come with.

When reviewers are writing reviews that essentially go "OMG THIS IS SO GOOD IT CONFIRMS ALL MY BIASES AND PRECONCEPTIONS" It is possibly one of the biggest red flags ever. Something meaningfully deep, will touch you no matter what, you would never allow the disservice of making it more about you, than making it an appreciation of what it has done.

This is all scattershot thoughts, from a number of different media, in different mediums ive consumed, where I trusted consensus, and reviews far more, before I was burned by wasting my time effort and money. The safest take is to never trust reviews at all, to never allow them to sway you either way, towards, or away from the art. The take I prefer, is a critical take, because it demands more. If I come in, with a set of suspicions, that means the way this art has to be communicated to me, has to be in such a unique and distinctive way, that it expresses something about it, that my suspicions didnt consider. Therefore my pre-experience judgements act as a sort of filter to make sure that even if its ultimately disappointing anyway because people are stupid and retarded and poor at articulating anything about the things the value of their experiences, at the very least I did my due dilligence to not be tricked.

Alright things are starting to get dumb, atleast politically.

This is a 12 year old girl btw, acting like an anime villain. Who inexplicably has power that not only supersedes the Queen, but also the Duke. You have to wonder at that point. Where the fuck do Simon and Miriamele actually get their power from? Wtf guarantees Saluceris' power, if random 12 year old girls from noble houses can just threaten what is effectively civil war? It just makes Simon and Miriamele's power seem incredibly superficial, resting on almost nothing but the fact that people believe them to be King and Queen. I think back to my history dive on Chinese politics. It is very very rare for noble houses alone to gain enough power to threaten the emperor, without getting the emperor on their side, or without already being involved in high positions in the court already. Usually military generals or rebel leaders who have courted the favour of the common people are the biggest threats to power.

The problem here is that both the Saluceris' brother (who is dead now, which is why the 12 year old girl wants revenge) and the 12 year old girl reiterated to Miriamele that blah blah blah Nabban is ruled by the noble houses and they can do whatever they want, so the King and Queen should just fuck off.

The problem here is that there is no way in hell that any noble houses should have an army that can compete whatsoever with the High Throne. And they shouldnt have the commoners on their side, because THEYRE FUCKING NOBLES. Why the fuck would commoners ever give a shit about the petty retarded immoral family fueds that nobles get up to? 90% of the time nobles are directly fucking over the commoners. Throwing money at them isnt enough, or else every rebellion in history would have been solved before it started. Atleast with America, most people are priveleged and rich, so no matter how much the superficially complain about billionaires, they will never have the balls to rebel, because theyre life is too stable, they have too much to lose. So they can tolerate getting fucked over a little bit like the bitches they are, it also helps to believe that democracy can actually change their circumstances no matter how much it fails to do so. The idea alone is strong enough

But this shouldnt be the case in Medieval Europe.

Anytime any part of any kingdom or country tries to break off and do their own thing....honestly I was going to say it doesnt work, but its honestly 50/50 isnt it? I mean Taiwan literally exists, North and South Korea exist, Northern Ireland exists, Ukraine exists, does Portugal count? Its not exactly unbelievable, but to make it make sense, you have to do a lot of work to build up the sociopolitical conditions of a climate.
>>
As of now. It makes zero sense how a 12 year old girl, who has no direct or even indirect ties to the throne (which has somehow existed 30 years without actual legitimate power???) which should be the highest power. Can threaten that very throne. We dont even have a basic "You need us, we happen to conveniently fund most of your fuedal economy" contrivance that shit writers who dont underatand politics like to pull. This is the part that really made it a flop for me. It felt like it was trying too hard to be le epic but couldn't conceptually justify it enough. Even being already familiar with the relevant SCP bullshit of idea space being a literal thing still doesn't make it less retarded. I'm also annoyed that the random aside about the statue that makes you forget how to ride a bike just didn't go anywhere when every other chapter at least felt relevant to the overarching narrative and tied in somehow. It's what it says on the box I guess and I'm not surprised that even the best of SCP trash isn't that great so 5/10 is a fair rating.

So you're telling me the 12 year old girl in a story that is explicitly 30 years after the end of the preceding trilogy, is explained, in that trilogy? Also every MST fan (mostly reddit) I've done research on has said that the prior trilogy isnt actually particularly political, so I heavily doubt, there would be political explanations for how a 12 year old from a noble family has enough power to threaten the high throne.

I don't mind spoilers. In a way reading the sequel trilogy (which the author said himself can be read without reading the original trilogy) is already technically "spoiling" oneself (I don't see it like that) about aspects of the past trilogy. So it doesn't matter.

If you can produce information from the original trilogy that explains the page I posted then ill admit I was wrong to not read it till after the sequel trilogy.

It was hyped up to me by a friend who described the graphic and skirmish scenes written by Abercrombie in great detail to me, that should have probably been my first hint. It's not like the books are bad, far from it, it's just that I didn't warm up to almost none of the characters in the three books I've read and I don't really care much for such scenes at all. In the end they just felt lacking I guess.

Literally yes.

Nabban was the Roman Empire. They were forced to bend the knee but managed to hold on to a considerable amount of autonomy thanks to their culture, history, and most importantly being where the seat of power for Aedonites is held. Also the way the kingdom is structured is that all the vassals hold the actual military power, which is how it worked in medieval europe too btw.

This is all explored at length in the first three books. The previous high king let the unified nation fall apart and Nabban used this as a chance to gobble up even more power and independence. Further, the ruling family of Nabban, Benidrivis, which Turia married into, is full of backstabbers who frequently kill each other to get ahead. It's their culture, again echoing Rome. Again this is explored at length in the first books, including a very pivotal scene that happens to Varellan's father that this plot beat is referencing.

Simon has attempted to fix things, but we're seeing how tenuous that control really is, and what exactly the purpose high king serves. Now take a biiiiiig sip of water and take a glance what the sequel trilogy is called. You getting it yet?

>>25444800
>the author himself said the original trilogy is not a prerequisite
So you get your panties twisted over being influenced by the wrong types of reviews, but you fall for blatant marketing speak? That's really sad.

You don't *need* to read anything to enjoy a book. But if your goal is a deep understanding of the lore and motivations and themes of a setting then obviously you should read the stuff that came out first that this is a direct continuation of. How is that even in question?

You don't actually understand what you're talking about, or what I'm criticizing. So I will not waste the time of effort in decomstructing something that doesn't understand that its not saying anything. Instead I post this. See, you don't actually understand the implications of the claims you make, because you don't actually understand history, what you know, is what the average retarded normie "knows" which is "events". History isnt merely a collection of events, its events ordered in a sense and manner through analysis that explains and gives context to developments and socioeconomic conditions. Atleast it should be, and in theory is.

If you can't answer the circled question your response means nothing. Every single story ever is "internally consistent" referring to itself doesnt address or answer a purported problem of writing.

I don't disagree, but science also used to be alchemy to some degree, I see no reason why the standard of "history should accurately account for and/or explain the conditions that led to certain developments and events" can't simply be what modern history is. We have a greater capacity for critical thought than retards of the past, both because we have more resources, and because we can learn from the mistakes of thinking in the past.

I'm doing some history reading right now to prove all the anons who called me dumb wrong.

That's because Osten Ard is an amalgamation of many different real world cultures. It's not actually real life, hopefully you know that already.

The high king position takes most of its cues from medieval Britain, and more specifically how the monarchy is depicted in Arthurian legend. After all, it was the literal Prester John that was the first high king of Osten Ard; that's why there are so many people with biblical names.

I may be able to get you up to speed for a modest fee, if that's something you're interested in.

I also can't get an explanation for why pesants just let nobles do whatever the fuck they wanted to them other than "The church told people that they deserve their subhuman life on earth and the nobles deserve to be above them" at a certain point it just gets ridiculous and starts to seem like Medieval Europe made zero sense whatsoever. The President Quite literally directly controls the military, can install supreme court judges, can higher DOJ and FBI leaders, can pardon criminals, can cut funding, and if there's anything trump has taught us, he can basically get away with almost anything. President exists to do what the people want, and other institutions exist to make sure what he wants to do is legal, that doesnt mean he has no power, infact wealthy people were practically giving him gifts at the coronation or whatever. The medieval relationship between the king and wealthy im talking about is practically the inverse.

4 years of school to become a secondary ed history teacher, the latter years spent student teaching and working on your bitch of a practicum. Then it's another 4 years of subbing, maybe you get lucky and a long term position transitions into a real job when they stay on maternity leave forever. More likely you're almost 30 before you're under contract.

All this to work at a job that sucks, teaching kids that hate you, for pay that is shit.

But then you reach the medieval curriculum. Finally a glimmer of hope. Kids actually want to learn this stuff, they love knights and kings and nobility, and they pick it up so easily. These next 6 weeks will be only good ones of the entire year.

I started it recently but I'm struggling to get through it. It started strong but really ground to a halt around the second part.
Considering dropping it, wondering if its worth pushing through. I'm also wondering if it is even worth reading in translation, it seems like a book that was written very specifically with the polish language in mind.

The sequels introduced a few novel concepts of life in Gibson's Sprawl world and some things were actually quite interesting, such as the exotic designer drugs and manipulation of human memory as a form of legal punishment, but the world building was lackluster and the actions of the characters felt less meaningful in comparison to the first book. I was not a fan of the inclusion of the Loa in the books at all. I think Gibson had an interest in "emergent" religious practices that were edgy and in vogue during the 80s for Westerners and he wanted to try to include them in his novels which is why we got Space Rastafari in the first book as well. It just did not seem to carry a lasting sense of weight or importance into our contemporary time frame. I would go so far as to argue that it likely did not seem so exotic or foreign of a concept even when written during the 80s and 90s. The idea of humans recreating new vehicles for their gods in the form or AI was not really a new idea by the time Gibson was putting pen to paper for these books

Back then I used to think Doors will come out maybe in 2022, or some far away year like 2024.

I plan there to be a Book (or a selection of chapters) in my story where Aidan (the protagonist) is unconscious and at the risk of death.
The hero-boy (can elaborate), whose name is Lukas, will visit a garden of roses which Aidan will state earlier in the story that its his favorite place to visit.
I wrote this imaginary excerpt of how I envision the scene to be:

>He arrived at the spacious garden of roses and stopped at once, for the wind moved them without mercy, and the orange sky spread its color over the red. When he saw how the roses covered the whole field, and how empty that field otherwise was, his eyes widened; and at the end of it, or as far as he could see, stood a single gravestone, since the garden's favorite visitor could come to it no more. On the stone he read plainly the name Aidan, and he saw the several other mourners who had come to this funeral, but he did not see the man's family, those who ought to have stood nearest him. At this the boy's knees gave way, and he fell at once, weeping both for the injustice and for his own folly.
(keep in mind that Aidan hasn't actually died, but is just the boy's imagination since he didn't really process the whole danger).

There's nothing in principle wrong with a light introduction, but I do hope you're not planning anything larger than a trilogy of 300-400 page books. Anything more than that is highly unlikely to work, and if you think you're the exception you're probably wrong just like all of the other failures. 1000 pages is huge; that's plenty of material to work with for a story of massive scale.

Are there any fantasy books that are like Baldur's Gate 3?
>>
>>25447475
haven't been reading lately
i have been mentally paralyzed by trying to rationalize thr stupidity of a king with superficial power this entire time, which the story pretended had any power or effect in not only electing somebody to rule over a vassal state, but one single threat from a 12 year old girl is enough to threaten/upend that completely. No amount of prequel explanation can make that make sense. Simon and Miriamele have been ruling for 30 years since MST. If their rule was never legitimate, it's a wonder that they did not find out, or have any major civil problems till now.

Now technically theres some ways to cop out of this. Its possible the Nabban state was just conveniently and inexplicably in agreement with the high throne until now, which seems unlikely as Simon and Miriamele have been against them encroaching on Thrithings land, and this seems to be what this whole thing is about.

Its also possible that real people who rule Nabban were simply letting the highthrone think they have any power, but the entire time they didnt. This is tricky though. The Duke is officially the ruler of Nabban, to pull a trick where youre controlling power from the shadows you'd need to control the duke or his closest advisors with that somehow never getting out. Unlikely, without extreme contrivance.

But even considering those cop outs. It makes no sense how the nobles got the commoners theyre fucking over to support them.

Planning on doing some research on Louis VI to remedy this.

Frankly im of the opinion that all nobles should just be killed. But if appointing officials works, it implies enough power to depose of and appoint officials as one wills, which implies a coercive force of power that while could still be resisted by powers that banded together to essentially start of civil war, shouldnt be capable of being resisted by one family and one 12 year old girl.

Louis XIV also gave government positions to nobles to ingratiate them to his will. but doing so makes no sense if that will couldnt then respond to dissenters and conspirators. Im logicking it out right now, History sources im finding online are rarely specific enough to answer my questions.
