Never read any Stephen King. What's the one book of his I should read?

I like 'Salem's Lot and The Shining the best. The first half of The Stand is also very enjoyable but declines a lot when the black woman enters the plot.

Personally, I really enjoyed Under the Dome because of how comfy it was, and if you're gonna read King, might as well comfy-maxx. The Stand I don't recommend because it's boring and overwritten if you ask me, if you want one book for him, don't go for it.

I like Pet Sematary because it's probably his creepiest work.I also like IT because it's a 1100 page cocaine fueled masterpiece of batshit insanity.He tries to EXPLAIN all the insanity, too. Hilarious and awesome.

You guys ever read The Ten O’Clock People? Nightmares and Dreamscapes was the first book I ever read by King, back when I was about eight years old. I read Ten O’Clock People years before I ever saw They Live. I knew he credited some other author in the forward for inspiration, but I had no idea it was damn near the same plot of a popular movie. As such, it blew me away. I thought it was genius.

Any of his books that leans too heavily on the supernatural or otherworldly side gets pretty stale after a while. Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis both start off great but kinda spirals out of control halfway in.

None of his books are life-changingly spectacular. But they can sitll be fun to read for pleasure. From the books of his that I have read, I have enjoyed: - The Shining - Carrie - Misery - The Long Walk I found Pet Sematary to be extremely overrated. He wrote a book called "Revival" and that was one of the worst books I have read. "Cujo" was mediocre as was "Doctor Sleep" .... I have mixed feelings overall, quality of his books is all over the place. But the ones I thought were good were good and I think can be enjoyed by anyone so as long as you see them for what they are: mere pleasure, just a few steps above pure slop.

It’s sort of its own thing, it’s basically a stand alone story told as a memory in the middle of the larger narrative of the dark tower series, which gives it its own identity and allows it to be different from the other books, I would even argue better. The ending of the series was terrible. I absolutely hated the last couple of books. King is bad at endings.
