Never read any Stephen King. What's the one book of his I should read?
pet semataryduma key misery
>>25451402I liked Dreamcatcher. I feel like it's a bit different from his other books, though.
One of his short stories ones, like Skeleton Crew.
>>25451402Misery>>25451416I'm a lifelong SK fan and I fuckin hated Dreamcatcher, the only book of his I disliked more was Doctor Sleep
>>25451439Yeah. I generally dislike SK, but I liked Dreamcatcher. Go figure.
>>25451444It started off strong imo with the space farts (I've got a soft spot for peepee poopoo King, who has a bizarre number of toilet-themed short stories) but it lost me pretty quickly
The Stand if you want one of his epics. For shorter books, Misery or The Gunslinger.
I like 'Salem's Lot and The Shining the best. The first half of The Stand is also very enjoyable but declines a lot when the black woman enters the plot.
>>25451402If you only read one, Pet Sematary for its authentic themes of death and grief
>>25451402Do not the king.
>>25451447I liked that it was so stream-of-consciousness
The Stand is his best novel, the Long Walk is my personal favorite, and Nightmares and Dreamscapes is his best short story collection
>>25451402The Shining is a masterpiece of Stephen King literature
Pet Semetary, just do it
>>25451402the best steffen king book is the one in the firepit
>>25451402Shawshank Redemption
Burnt OfferingsStingerSwan's SongGhost StoryFloating DragonHell HoundJerusalem Man
>>25451402Salem's Lot. Misery is overrated imo.
>>25451402Test.
>>25451402Why does he look like Ray Liotta's corpse?
>>25451402Either Green Mile or Dead Zone
>>25452369Swan song was written by Robert R. McCammon faggot. But yes its a very good book even better than The Stand.
>>25451402Seems like every poster has a different opinion, so it's probably best you see for yourself what looks the most promising. Personally, I really enjoyed Under the Dome because of how comfy it was, and if you're gonna read King, might as well comfy-maxx. The Stand I don't recommend because it's boring and overwritten if you ask me, if you want one book for him, don't go for it.
why is IT like 10 thousand pages long?who the fuck wants to read trough all that?
>>25452384Salem's lot and IT are overrated. Dracula over all is a very overrated plot. I have no clue why it ever became 100 movies.
>>25452900>super rich dickhead who lives by killing othersobv attractive concept to women lol
>>25451402The Green Mile is one of the few novels he has written with actual literary merit.
>>25452887It’s basically two complete books, that’s why the movie versions always break it up into part one and part two. It’s also one of those “town” books like Needful Things or The Tommyknockers that King wrote back when the price of cocaine was low and he had the energy to write a little chapter for nearly every member of an entire goddamn community
>>25451402I've read Carrie, Salems lot, The Shining, Pet Sematary and Night Shift (short story collection). Of these I enjoyed Carrie the most, and Salems lot the least (dumb fucking book, shitty characters, makes no sense if you think about the plot for 5 seconds). So I guess I recommend Carrie.
>>25452095It devolved into a spooky haunted house ride in the fourth quarter, and b-movie action/horror by the end, complete with explosions and 'witty' quips.
>>25451447if you read On Writing you'll find an anecdote from his childhood that wouldn't be out of place as a greentext in a /d/ fart thread
>>25451402The one about a school shooting.
The girl who loved tom gordon is underrated
>>25453194Yeah its a stephen king book and it does stephen king things but the final scene with jack and his son was kino and and one of the best things hes ever done and overall I think it still remains one of his greatest works
>>25451426This. The Jaunt is my favorite. He should have stuck with short stories. All of them are way better than his long stories.
I wish this man had an editor.
>>25452863>overwrittenI think all his books are
Different Seasons. /tv/fags might recognize three of the four short stories.
>>25454663Needful Things and The Tommyknockers are each longer than Moby Dick
>>25451684My favorite is night shift, i found it to be the most solid collection, skeleton crew was also really good, nightmare and dreamscapes was the more inconsistent, some stories were really boring
I like Pet Sematary because it's probably his creepiest work.I also like IT because it's a 1100 page cocaine fueled masterpiece of batshit insanity. He tries to EXPLAIN all the insanity, too. Hilarious and awesome.
>>25456715>some stories were really boringYou’re crazy. The only one I found boring was Dolan’s Cadillac and apparently most people think it’s one of his better novellas
>>25451402Misery The Stand Delores Claiborne
I am personally a big fan of Night ShiftIt's a good mix of short stories and I think a decent choice if you want to test the water with King. Some of my personal favorites are:The Lawnmower ManGrey MatterStrawberry SpringGraveyard ShiftThe Ledge
>>25451402The Stand. Don't listen these rubes. The Stand is King's greatest novel followed by Wizard ang Glass
>>25451402The first half of The Stand
You guys ever read The Ten O’Clock People? Nightmares and Dreamscapes was the first book I ever read by King, back when I was about eight years old. I read Ten O’Clock People years before I ever saw They Live. I knew he credited some other author in the forward for inspiration, but I had no idea it was damn near the same plot of a popular movie. As such, it blew me away. I thought it was genius.
>>25456809Sneakers was absolutely pointless and just seemed like an excuse to show off audio engineer lingo
Just read that one chapter in IT over and over again.
>>25452818Of course Swan Song is better than The Stand because the former is great and the latter sucks.
>>25452863Which other books would you recommend for some random fag looking to comfy-maxx? Under the Dome was great. Duma Key and the one named after the date where JFK was shot are also comfy. Any of his books that leans too heavily on the supernatural or otherworldly side gets pretty stale after a while. Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis both start off great but kinda spirals out of control halfway in.
>>25458160kek
None of his books are life-changingly spectacular. But they can sitll be fun to read for pleasure. From the books of his that I have read, I have enjoyed: - The Shining - Carrie - Misery - The Long Walk I found Pet Sematary to be extremely overrated. He wrote a book called "Revival" and that was one of the worst books I have read. "Cujo" was mediocre as was "Doctor Sleep" .... I have mixed feelings overall, quality of his books is all over the place. But the ones I thought were good were good and I think can be enjoyed by anyone so as long as you see them for what they are: mere pleasure, just a few steps above pure slop.
>>25454918Yeah it's crazy how this was plundered for the screen so well.
How would you rank his Dark Tower books?
The Green Mile
If you like horror slop, read his regular stuff. If you like half-decent thrillers, read>Roadwork>The Running Man>The Long Road>Rage (worst)
>>25461528The first few books are good. Wizard and Glass was really good. It’s sort of its own thing, it’s basically a stand alone story told as a memory in the middle of the larger narrative of the dark tower series, which gives it its own identity and allows it to be different from the other books, I would even argue better. The ending of the series was terrible. I absolutely hated the last couple of books. King is bad at endings.
