>Is King Lear as good as Akira made it out to be?
Lear has the fool stay to the end. Lear is also partly gender flipped from Ran, so is weaker because girls are weaker (Why did Shakespeare give such important roles to boys in girl's clothing?). Lear also lacks a sexy Fox Demon. This means that Lear is the inferior play by far. I want to stick my dick inside a fox.

Valid reasoning anon

I read king Lear because of this film

No. Kurosawa improved upon King Lear in every possible way.

I read this as asa akira I’m so cooked

Don't feel bad. I read it as the anime Akira

King Lear is just English words put in order.

No, better.

No, King Lear is infinitely better. Kurosawa's only successful Shakespeare adaptation was Throne of Blood. The Bad Sleep Well has little to do with Hamlet and Ran changes so much of what makes King Lear a masterpiece. In fact, Ran is so much worse than King Lear, I find it impossible to watch the movie as an adaptation without the entire movie being spoiled. Even when judged as a movie alone it is inferior to Kurosawa's classic b&w movies. It doesn't deserve the amount of praise it gets.

only a wordcel would say something like this, you understand people watch films for images and cinematography too, and this film is a visual masterpiece even without sound or dialogue

Yes, it is a visual masterpiece, but it's often praised as one of Kurosawa's greatest films when it's just not. For that reason it's overrated. Visually it's more static and cumbersome than his earlier films, and the actors largely worse, but he does partially make up for it with the sheer grandeur of imagery.

>Visually it's more static and cumbersome than his earlier films
It's his late style, all of his films from the 70s onwards have this "static" stage play feel. It's not bad, just very different.
One of the best things about Kurosawa is to realize how much he changes and evolves in his career, and learning how to appreciate his mastery over different visual languages.

I saw this film because I had read King Lear.

I watched this after reading it. It's free on YouTube and I prefer it over Ran. Laurence Olivier is one of the greatest performers of Shakespeare in film.
