what do these retarded foids even annotate? is this something people actually do with their books?
>>
>>25454536
When posted like this its obviously an outflow of this performative studying culture some girls like to do where you compete for the prettiest handwriting with hearts on the i and multicolored annotations in your lecture notes and so on. But despite a lot of the effort being performative and superfluous, it does actually work going through books like this, just because youre constantly engaging with the structure and prose of the book in a way a casual reader isnt.

I've personally found one of the best ways to actually study philosophy is to summarize the work of philosophy im reading while im reading it, and continiously refining and revisiting the summary as i go through the book. I just do it in wordpad rather than with multicolored markers.

I once dated one of these

She didn't read fiction
She asked me what I liked to do, obviously it was reading fiction, thousands of books
So she asked me for a book, and I gave her a short story compilation and told her my favourite
She returned the book to me sometime later, my favourite short story annotated (not a single other), because she clearly struggled with understanding the plot
And I understood
She'd tried hard to do something I liked but which was just too difficult for her, it was simply not how she was wired
(Intelligence and language was not the problem)
And I understood this even more when I dated other girls with other talents I did not possess
For example a dance lover who could put to shame any pop artiste you can name, whereas I can barely shuffle my two left feet 2 steps without looking awkward
Anyhow, that's when I realised that annotation is most often done by people who are struggling to understand, especially in fiction when there should be no reason to annotate for any other purposes (unlike say work reports which I annotate as an aide memoire)

In this and other things we were incompatible, and it was nearly a relief to break up
But I do still regret it; she was cute and I wanted very much to love her

Also I will add, women annotate and men don't; men will simply give up and go play basketball or Call Of Duty or something
It's not a problem of intelligence
>>

That's a nice story anon. The annotated books I've gotten have always been academic texts with what are clearly research notes in the margins. At most a used copy of something typically assigned in high school curricula might have highlights for a paper, but I've never seen anything like what you see on social media out in the wild. Women used to do this with their class notes as well. It really does seem just to be performative, though for whom I'm not sure. Is it supposed to be impressive?

Rarely you do get copies with actual thoughts scrawled inside, but when you do they're always a delight if only because they're proof someone loved the story before you did. It's a bit sad to see the ones with personal messages written to friends, family, or lovers in the covers though. It's like seeing wedding dresses or photos sold secondhand. The best case scenario here is that they were beloved before and have since passed on, but regardless it reminds you of the transient nature of mementos, sentimentality itself, or any material items at all.

yeah that's pretty normal
sometimes it's useful, as most textbooks etc are so badly written that annotation is necessary to pick the useful bits out of all the rubbish.

sometimes it's also clearly pointless, because
>Women used to do this with their class notes as well. It really does seem just to be performative, though for whom I'm not sure. Is it supposed to be impressive?
it is often the case that they struggle with understanding and they're trying to understand. annotation per se often does not help, but it's a symptom of their lack of understanding.

I follow this schizo Black Israelite couple (he gets very offended if you call them that, though) and even he doesn't annotate his Bible this much. Now I know he's specifically looking for and highlighting passages that are vague enough for him to say "JESUS WUZ BLACK, YA'LL GOTTA DO YA DUE DILIGENCE," so you know he's stretching every line. Lots of highlighting. It's retarded, but he's actually *searching* for something in that text.

But these white women... What's even the point? At the very best, all I can think of is that these are English teachers and these are books which they thoroughly cover at least once a year, so they really need to know then in-and-out. Even then it seems overboard.

That they have a question about it. That they want to revisit the passage later to form an argument against it or write out their thoughts on it, perhaps in another book altogether. Annotating text can be a great strategy because you're interacting with the text more. Posting pictures of your annotations for clout is, for the sake of brevity, gay shit.

Whenever I was in college I would do a paragraph summary of the chapter after I read it just so I wouldn't forget things. I guess this isn't actually annotating text but it's similar. Also, when I was in elementary school I was really serious about my AR points. On my bookmark I made of folded paper I would jot little notes to again help with memorization.
>>
>>25455636
>you're interacting with the text more.
I feel like those who don't do it for clout do it because otherwise they simply can't interact with the text to begin with. They're forcing themselves to engage with it.

as a STEM chad I annotate books bc (a) it helps me understand a proof / derivation of a formula, (b) makes it easier to re-read it (you easily remember what you had thought of it) and (b) bc most books on math are colorless and brings in vibrancy and "life" that helps you remember and understand it

when I read literature, I do it for the same reason more or less and bc sometimes I think a phrase or a thought was intriguing / cool and I want to highlight it to remember it (I did this with the bible or with Milton's paradise lost)

it's very helpful to understand a complicated text and keep it in memory, frankly

foids don't annotate anything. They just like highlighting stuff. Foids do it because they want you look at their gay smut book full of sticky notes and think, "Wow, she must be really smart. Look at all those thoughts she had while reading that book!"

I say this as someone who actually does annotate books to improve my own writing. I don't use a highlighter, I don't use tabs. I just use a pen. There is no need for all the nonsense women use except they want their books to look stuffed full of notes. I doubt they even look up words they don't know in a dictionary.

no, that's not the point
I annotate my reports too, but the main purposes are to communicate information to others, or as an aide memoire. but I don't do it for fiction, because I can remember the plot and details of a fictional novel without needing a physical prompt

she couldn't. for work yes, but not for fiction

that's my point, reading a short story which I would do for fun was almost as tiresome to her as work, because to her it WAS work
in exactly the same way it would be work for me to dance. (highlighted for me when I was dating the dancer. she got off on it like crack and would end a session hours and hours later with stars in her eyes; for me it was WORK and more stressful than recreational. besides, I suck.)

which is why I believe that we're all wired different. refer Gardner's 8 Intelligences

and I believe that the more annotations there are in a book, it really shows the more the annotator is struggling with the content
be it reading for work or for leisure, you don't write notes for stuff that is blindingly obvious, that literally "need not be said"

Annotating takes me out of the reading more than it helps. I find it odd because writers clearly don't intend for readers to engage with a text while constantly stopping and taking notes, in the same way old TV screenwriters did not write scripts for people to binge watch or obsessively pause and rewind scenes.
I have memory issues so I usually keep a very small notebook with my eReader and write down character full names and first appearances, but I wouldn't do that if I didn't have a fucked frontal cortex.

average-girl "annotation" is just a coloring exercise, not an exploration of ideas or arguments, or the book's literary or linguistic mechanisms, or notes about how some part of the text relates to other parts of the text or to other works, etc.

oh I think they try to
it's just that the notes they make are so shallow that we are all dumbstruck that it needs annotation at all

for example, in >>25455950

clearly the annotator did not understand these words, which betrays a certain vocabulary level
but
>as punishment
WTF else could whipping be for?!
>symbolic of how it provokes
nothing symbolic at all in the highlighted passage
>she reacts with hostility
the shallowest interpretation of this passage, in fact merely restating and summarising the text
here it is the lack of notation that betrays the reader totally missed the more meaningful point:
>there was at least an intelligible earnestness in the mood; instead of the fitful caprice

I annotate lightly, just a curly bracket to indicate sections I like or want to quickly find later, occasionally with a quick identification note. Sometimes I'll write a quick note at the start of a longer important sequence just to say "hey, this is where that bit starts."

All of it is in the service of just being handy reference for later. I don't understand the sort of "conversational" annotating some people do with books. On re-read, I want to read the actual text, not my own shitty half-baked thoughts about the text.

It takes so long I haven't been able to do it before a thread goes away, but one of these days I'm gonna set the type for a response to a /lit/ post. Yes, I have a letterpress and I know how to use it.

women operate on a higher plane of intuition you don't truly understand what it means to be a woman or how to think like one, because you remain trapped in the labyrinth of the male ego...just sad, so sad, um i really think the insecurity seeps through in these threads really fierce and its primitive and not cute

The only time I’ve ever felt compelled to highlight anything was when I was comparing the last chapter of the 2 most popular English storm of steel translations and since marking real books is retarded I just downloaded pdfs of each and did it in paint dot net, if you annotate your books you better show me the essay you wrote

true. i assume so anyway. this sentence was more than 12 words so tl;dr

>Also, when I was in elementary school I was really serious about my AR points.

I always had the highest AR score in my class, and I never took notes. I doubt that really helped, especially given the fact that most AR related materials were fiction. It's fun to highlight passages you enjoyed though, I do that in most of my paperbacks.

Outing myself as an old retard but back in the 90s in high school there was always one chick in class who would take four hours for a 20 minute standardized reading test, using multiple colored highlighters.

Can't decide if Mein Kampf or Finnegans Wake would be funnier
>>
>>25455003
You don't need to scribble in your book to seriously engage with literature. Simply thinking about what you read will do the trick.

>I doubt they even look up words they don't know in a dictionary
If you are an adult who still don't know essentially all the words in your native language or can't just understand the meaning simply by context, then you never gonna make it.

This is legit a pretty funny service. I'd avail it if only to get them to read D&G, Fanged Noumena, and such

I actually want this now
>>

Finnegans Wake is definitely funnier. Annotation foids would reject Mein Kampf outright, but they will try to understand Finnegans Wake in an earnest way, and will fail hilariously.

>>25455109
>Is it another moid fetish like used socks and bathwater?
There's not a single moid involved, or anything sexual for that matter.
This is clearly made by foids to other foids, so they can read a book like they are scrolling each other's tumblr
>>
>>25454536
Because like with anything foids do, they need to mark it up, and post it online. They do this with themselves, their food, everything. They are incapable of enjoying something alone and just for themselves.

I don’t think thats the fundamental motivation. They like doing homework and they think they should annotate books to be a “close reader” because they learned it in school (and the pretty booktok girls do it too!). They’re probably following the same common core rubrics they forced us to comply with in 9th grade English class. There’s tens of thousands of lumpy crochet women highlighting books and never showing them to anyone at all. You could put the median woman in a spaceship in an interstellar vacuum to never be seen by anyone again and she would cutely highlight and scribble every piece of writing available and sticker every surface.

There are over one million words in the English language
>just know them all!!!!
Yeah ok. Einstein over here no longer looks up any word. You must be very smart.
>>
What's wrong with annotating? I don't write in mine. I just put those pointy sticky notes on certain parts (colored for certain things like themes) with a number and reference it in a notebook.
>>
>>25459098
>There are over one million words in the English language
Most of them are derivates from other words. As I said, you can easily understand them by context (if you are a fully literate adult, of course).
>Yeah ok. Einstein over here no longer looks up any word. You must be very smart
Yes, I am. Thank you for noticing, you are not the first one.
>>
>>25454536
Personally I never saw the use in annotation, but I did highlight plenty of my textbooks whilst going through university. It made studying a lot easier. As anyone who's gone through textbooks knows that they're full of fluff and useless text, so when you're going back to study for exams you can safely skip the irrelevant parts.
