Meditation just means thinking about what you've read; setting your mind to dwell upon texts. Sitting still without thinking or staring at a wall for periods of time is useful for certain things, or for altering the state of the body, but it isn't meditation. If you are looking for mystical states, that was called contemplation. Just read the philosophers, saints, monastics. It's all there in Jerome, Benedict, Plato, &c.

Just straight meditation or Christian/Hasidic spiritual meditation? Would you count American Trancendentalist texts? Though Emerson was influenced by Vedanta and Mencius so I suppose it's still orientalist in a sense.
