Is the soul gendered? Or is gender a property of the incarnate body of the soul? Or is it just a material-world trait like a "color filter" that the soul projects itsels through into the material world? Or are there eternal feminine and masculine forces with a will of their own that imbue everything?
>>
>>25457062
The soul is a social construct anon.
>>
>>25457062
you will never be a women
>>
It's not gendered in English, but it is gendered in French, for example.

The soul is the divine spark. Its the portion of God that resides within each living being, and the purpose of life is to release this spark from its captivity in the material world to reconnect with God, the source of divine light.
>>
>>25457120
I always saw soul as coming from below but wet and cold. And spirit coming from above but hot like fire.

Soul to me is of the underworld, not God.
>>
>>25457062
Of course the soul is gendered.
>>
>>25457167
Of course?
>>
>>25457062
No empirical evidence for soul as in a different substance i.e dualism, so we can't even begin to have this conversation, as we only know bodies are sexed because we can indeed verify empirically the differences between the sexes.
Now, if you equate the soul with awareness or consciousness, then the answer is manifestly no, as men and women are sentient in the same manner.
If, however, you include the 'passions of soul' into your definition, then perhaps there's something to be argued about how men and women have different proclivities and temperaments. Leaving aside for a moment the nature/nurture discussion and assuming said differences to be innate, some would argue they can be explained from an evolutionary psychology standpoint, which you may interpret as differences in the soul of each sex.
>>
>>25457120
To be clear, the idea that man is of the same substance of God, or contains part of God, or is in any sense divine, is a formal heresy and the most egregious form of spiritual vanity.
>>
>>25457062
A human being is gendered, the soul isn't the "true human" the soul is the principle of internal motion and change of the substance for the matter. If you have a womb and produce large gametes your soul is the principle of that motion.
I still wouldn't say a soul is gendered, as that sort of is assuming that the soul is the "true human" or something. You could not take a soul from one body and put it onto another, the soul is tied to being this particular body. I think there is a sense in which you could say a soul is gendered virtually or analogically, but properly speaking only human beings are gendered. I wouldn't even say properly speaking the body is gendered, if there is a dead body I don't think you can say "this is a female" you can say "this is the body of a female".
>>
>>25457526
Forgot to answer your last question about the "divine feminine/masculine" I would say absolutely not.
I would say however as we are humans and sort of in a human culture and using human ways of thinking, we can abstract out how we encounter females (which is essentially just a biological configuration to produce large gametes) and how that is expressed culturally, sort of using the receptive and active principles and try to see it in everything but by definition those are descriptions of relations. Everyone is passive and active in reference to certain things, you are passive in response to this post as you are reading it and being acted on by me just as I am passive in responsive to the OP. Every man is passive in response to God as well can only receive from him, in a sense a human being as masculine as possible is being maximally feminine as he is being most responsive and receptive of the nature God created them with.

Female in general, the large gamete producing mammals if you look across the animal kingdom just doesn't actually really follow the human cultural instances and there are hermaphroditic animals which produce both gametes. Many species have females who would be closer to types we would consider males.

For humans within a human culture though human femininity and masculinity is extremely important in the psyche and in our understanding of things and I think it's fair that we use analogies of sex as interpretive mechanisms to understand things. I go along with the whole jungian ideas that there is in the human psyche a complex which sort of embodies the feminine in our selves that we project out onto others (often actual women) and other ones which express masculine principles as we see them and because of that much of our perception of things in some sense can be saturated with this sort of gendered characteristic Though I think just metaphysically speaking the male and female principles don't really appear. You could make the case potentiality/actuality but that just seems like a forced frame but the earth/soil as feminine that is created and moved by God "mother earth" I guess you could say does reflect it kind of but again, it's only an analogy. That is seeing the feminine and masculine in their most abstract form of pure relation which only applies everywhere because you are abstracting so far from the reality.

men and women - and their souls - are obviously distinct categories from a divine creator's perspective.

from a materialistic perspective, men and women are even more obviously distinct, as they are entirely products of their bodies and no divine source of wisdom is required to recognize them as in inherently different categories. indeed, everyone is born innately understanding the difference between male and female and this is one of the clearest mental categories people have

human culture is entirely besides the point. it doesn't matter what humans' opinions are on the sun, and they indeed have had many different opinions on it, yet the sun will remain forever indifferent to them. so does the category of male/female.

>You could not take a soul from one body and put it onto another, the soul is tied to being this particular body.

Do you have a source or proof for this claim?
>>
>>25457834
Each soul/form is unique to it's own matter, in terms of distinct categories that is just to say they are real categories but again the fundamental issue is you don't understand what the soul is and the relation it has to the body. Your view is what creates the potential of a trans thing if you are saying there is a male or female soul separate from the body it creates the situation in which the soul and body can be at odds.

The person is sexed again, it's part of what being a human is. A person is a form-matter composite but the sex belongs to the person. The soul is a unique thing without parts that composes the matter and is unique to that person. Their body's growth (including growing a uterus) comes from their soul so as I said there is a sense in which you can say the soul is gendered virtually or analogously but properly speaking you can only say that of the person.

God does not choose to create "a man" he choses to create a person with their identity history, capacity, everything individual about a person in toto and as a part of that expression it includes sex as their perfection.

Like in almost everything, the standpoint of Islam seems the most convincing to me.
The Soul in its purest form and essence is genderless, or transcends genders, however it is deeply intertwined and in deep unity with its specific body and all physical manifestations of it are always with its specific body. They are velieved to be deeply intertwined to the point where some such as Mulla Sadra believed that the Soul is "bodily in its origin" instead of just married to its body.
>>
>>25457513
Thank you, rabbi. Very cool!
>>
>>25457062
The soul is really just the transcendental subject, which is why we can't ever have an objective, empirical and external intuition of it in space and time, but always a purely subjective intuition in time only internally within ourselves. Gender or biological sex only applies to spatiotemporal, empirical and external intuitions of our bodies and is therefore unrelated to the soul.
>>
>>25457062
Using a sort of modern Aristotelian framework, id say the soul is best understood as the form of the body, or put differently, the 'organizational principle' of a living body. A living human is differentiated from a corpse by whether the organizational principle is still working. Further, that organizational principle clearly got layers to it. And whether the soul is gendered depends on which layer you're talking about.

the organizational principle or 'soul' behind most of the physiological functioning of the body (what Aristotle would mostly call the vegetative soul, kinda, im including more than he would) is not meaningfully gendered i think, because gender is completely accidental to it. its simply hungry, thirsty, digesting, moving, reacting, etc. this part might have and maintain sexual differences but remains completely unconscious of it.
Put differently, this layer 'has' a gender, but much like a plant, it does not know it, and would not care if it changed.

The second you get to the layer of mostly subconscious desires in the brain (what maps most closely to Aristotle's Animal soul), i think the soul is very gendered. Here i think most of the Freudian analysis is correct. it is a large, messy fabric of desires conditioned by cultural expectations and biological drives that vary greatly between men, women, and others that don't clearly fit those biological/cultural roles.

Then above that (what Aristotle would call the Rational soul), the higher layers that are processing those subconscious desires into more abstract ideas and considerations again move away from gender. Emotions and aesthetic reactions might still contain many subconscious and therefore gendered influences, but already much less than the subconscious desires themselves. And the second you get to abstract reasoning, gender is completely irrelevant. On the whole it is never completely gone, but much less relevant and much more malleable.
>>
>>25459165
An actual answer. Notice that even though the soul is only relevant to our physical existence when it's embodied it's not a product of the body, instead it's the principle that shapes the body. Like logic it's immortal and beyond space and time. Your specific gendered soul always existed and always will.
>>
>>25459165
That makes sense actually

>>25459165

You said that the Bible states we're made in God's image, and that we're above angels (note - also not divine) in the cosmological hierarchy. Neither of these suggests that man has a divine nature. This is just vacuous new age hippie shit and it's cute how furious you are over it.
>>
Can you put yourself in the shoes of someone of the opposite sex by imagining you are in that body? I think the answer is yes. The body sets certain spiritual agendas, like whether sexual success depends on security and selection or on competition and quantity. But your soul learns these through the body, and so there's nothing more fundamental than a lack of imagination that makes the opposite sex spiritually foreign to you.

It's not downstream of it at all. You're reading something into the text that isn't there and then getting pissy that two thousand years of Church tradition disagrees with your shower thoughts.

Fairly straightforward, it's the constant refrain of YOU'RE KEKED, YOU'RE JEWISH. If you just had a disagreement you wouldn't need to be so hostile and defensive.

Soul is just a convenient way of describing the absurd acts of chemicals in our brain. Gender is a social construct. We know this because you look at two different countries on opposite sides of the planet, like America vs Japan. and see that even while we may be alike we are also different. gendered pronoun usage is an obvious example
>>

>Soul is just a convenient way of describing the absurd acts of chemicals in our brain.
Unless you're willing to concede that the words you're speaking are meaningful, then language requires intentionality, which is incompatible with psychological materialism.

For the record I agree about gender.
>>
>>25461579
Not really, it's just that you have a definition of meaning that fits your worldview.
That's pretty normal and there is no truly neutral place, that's why deductive arguments usually fail, one party completely honestly rejects a premise.
>>
>>25461632
That doesn't mean it has to be a "psychological materialism" argument. You're trying to argue philosophy when I'm stating verifiable fact. I get it, armchair experts want to argue with everybody
>>
>>25461675
When I say meaning here I mean semantic meaning. Words referring to or signifying things or ideas. That requires intentionality.
>>25461686
Look man, if you come into a thread about the soul and open with the premise that the soul doesn't exist or is shorthand for material phenomena, you shouldn't be surprised to find somebody taking umbrage with that.
>>
>>25459803
I dont think this analogy with logic quite works, because the essence of logic is to be the form of form, i.e the matter of which logic is the form are themselves concepts.

It sound a bit silly but a closer analogy to the actual immortality of the soul would be something like a minecraft save. Suppose i have a minecraft world, with all the wonderful memories, buildings and particularities accumulated in the process of me playing in that world.

If that save file were to be destroyed, that minecraft world would in some way still technically exist. Minecraft as a game still exists, the seed i used to generate that world still exists, and my world was only a particular instance of the game minecraft. This is the (neo-)Platonic immortality of the soul. In practice, however, that save has been deleted and will never return with the same buildings, the same memories, and the same items, the same history. This is the Aristotelian mortality of the soul. Both are in some way true, neither should be confused with the notion of the Christian resurrection of the soul.

> There's no such thing as a sou-ACK!!!

1. Arguments from Internal (First-Person) Experience (Introspection)
The first major category of arguments is based on first-person access to our own mental life. These arguments examine the nature of the mind as it presents itself in direct experience, revealing features that resist reduction to purely physical processes. The key insight behind this category is that our immediate awareness of consciousness discloses fundamental aspects of the self that suggest an immaterial nature.

A. Arguments from Modal Possibility (Metaphysical Distinctions)
These arguments explore what is logically and metaphysically possible regarding the relationship between mind and body. By considering scenarios where the mind persists despite physical change or where physical duplication fails to preserve identical consciousness, we reveal that the mind cannot be reduced to the physical.

The Argument from Augustine/Descartes (Mind-Body Distinction): If I can conceive of my mind existing without my body, then my mind is not identical to my body.

The Argument from the Possibility of Body Part Replacement: If I can remain the same person despite complete replacement of my body’s matter, then my identity is not tied to my physical substance.

The Argument from the Possibility of Brain Transplants: If my brain were split into two hemispheres and transplanted into different bodies, which one would be me? Since no clear answer follows from physical considerations alone, I must not be identical to my brain.

The Argument from the Possibility of Zombies: If it is logically possible for a physically identical being to lack consciousness, then consciousness is not reducible to physical processes.

The Argument from the Possibility of an Inverted Spectrum: If it is possible for two people to have the same physical brain states but experience different colors (qualia), then consciousness cannot be explained in purely physical terms.

The Argument from the Possibility of Multiple Consciousnesses (Given Identical Physical Structure): If a physically identical being could have a different conscious experience, then consciousness is not determined by physical states alone.

B. Arguments from Subjective Experience (Phenomenology of Mind)
While modal arguments establish metaphysical possibility, phenomenological arguments focus on how consciousness actually presents itself to us. These arguments draw attention to the irreducibility of first-person experience and the way it resists third-person physical description.

The Argument from Phenomenal Differences: Mental properties are categorically different from physical properties—no physical description of the brain can explain what it is like to feel pain or see red.
>>
>>25462229
The Argument from First-Person Private Experience (Qualia): Our subjective experiences are known only to us and cannot be accessed by others in the way physical objects can.

The Argument from Private Access: Mental states are accessible only from the inside, whereas physical states are publicly observable. If consciousness were purely physical, it should be observable in the same way as physical objects.

The Argument from Incorrigibility: Unlike physical reports, introspective awareness of mental states is direct and infallible—if I feel pain, I cannot be mistaken that I am feeling pain.

The Argument from Epistemic Gaps: There is an explanatory gap between brain states and conscious experience—knowing all the physical facts does not explain why consciousness exists.

C. Arguments from the Nature of Mental Operations
Beyond modal and phenomenological considerations, the very way the mind operates suggests a non-physical basis. These arguments show that mental operations—especially in the realms of reason, sensation, and volition—cannot be explained by purely material processes.

1. Intellectual Operations
The Argument from Logic: Logical reasoning is abstract and universal, whereas physical processes are contingent and particular. If thought were physical, logical necessity would be impossible.

The Argument from Sensation: Psychological experiences of sensation include irreducible qualitative elements (qualia) that cannot be explained in purely physical terms.

The Containment Argument: The mind can contain concepts far larger than the physical brain (e.g., imagining the infinite universe), suggesting that thought is not spatially constrained like the brain.

The Infinite Capacity of the Mind Argument: The mind can hold an infinite number of truths, whereas the brain has finite neurons—suggesting a difference in nature between mental capacity and physical storage.
The Argument from Self-Reflection: The mind has the unique ability to reflect on itself, an operation that does not reduce to mechanistic causation.

2. Volitional Operations
The Argument from Free Will: If free will exists, it cannot be a purely physical event governed by deterministic laws—volitional agency requires an immaterial basis.
>>
>>25462231

2. Arguments from External (Third-Person) Experience
While introspective arguments rely on first-person mental access, the second major category appeals to third-person empirical and metaphysical considerations. These arguments consider the soul’s role in life, unity, and continuity over time.

A. The Argument from Life (Soul as a Vital Principle)
Living beings exhibit unity, self-movement, and goal-directedness that cannot be reduced to mere mechanistic interactions. The soul serves as the form and vital principle that distinguishes living things from non-living matter.

B. Arguments from Unity (The Soul as the Unifying Principle of Experience and Identity)
Synchronic Unity (Unity at Any One Time)
The Argument from Ontological Unity: A person must have a metaphysical principle that makes them one thing; no atom or cluster of atoms can serve this role.
The Argument from Psychological Unity: The unity of conscious experience (how disparate sensory data forms a single self-awareness) cannot be accounted for by a purely physical object.

Diachronic Unity (Unity Over Time)
The Argument from Identity Over Time: As body parts are replaced over time, something must persist to maintain personal identity—the soul is the best candidate.

The Argument from the Continuity of Self: If our identity remains despite physical change, the principle of selfhood must be immaterial.

3. Arguments for the Post-Mortem Persistence of the Soul
The final category concerns whether the soul continues to exist after bodily death. These arguments do not fit neatly into either first-person or third-person arguments but instead focus on inferences from indirect evidence, metaphysical necessity, and moral considerations.

A. The Argument from Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)
Reported NDEs provide empirical (albeit anecdotal) evidence of consciousness persisting when the brain is non-functional, suggesting the independence of the soul.
>>
>>25462233

B. The Argument from Moral Realism and Post-Mortem Accountability
If moral realism is true, then ultimate justice requires a final reckoning beyond death—implying the necessity of an enduring soul.

Conclusion
This three-part structure organizes all major arguments for the soul into a clear and systematic framework. The first-person arguments explore immediate awareness of mind, the third-person arguments analyze the soul’s necessity for unity and life, and the post-mortem arguments establish its persistence beyond death. Together, they present a comprehensive, multi-faceted case for the existence and nature of the soul.
