Barack Obama is set to host a podcast about books that have “profoundly shaped his worldview and our society”

In each of six episodes the former US president will discuss one of his chosen titles with a guest.

Books will be:
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John le Carré.
from Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison.
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin.
All the Pretty Horses by Corncob McCarthy.
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren.

Which book are you most looking forward to being discussed. For me its Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Housekeeping is my favorite book ever and Robinson is easily the best living Christian writer.

It was a minor miracle that the Obama administration was able to prevent the USA's economy from lurching into depression after 2008 and you know it.

His summer reading lists were always delightful.

He did what he could given the circumstances and the powers that were beholden to him, and we should be thankful for that.

were it that 'powers were beholden to him' as you phrased, indicates that he held the reins of power over others. The logic of what you wrote only coheres if Obummer be given the position of object rather than subject, to wit, 'the powers to which he was beholden.'

Another stylistically poor but logically sound construction could have been '[limited, or finite] powers that were beholden to him' indicating he did the best with what he had.
