How to focus while reading if you have ADHD?
just focus
Stop using 4chan
ADHD doesn't prevent you from focusing on reading, if anything having it will make you read more if you actually enjoy the activity. I was diagnosed with it (and autism) as a child and I can read whole novels across a few daysAll ADHD means is you have dysregulation regarding attention and avoid unenjoyable activities as a result. It doesn't mean you have the attention span of a mosquito. If you struggle to read a book from cover to cover, you either:A) don't actually enjoy reading (in which case why are you doing it to begin with?)B) have fried your brain with shortform internet content orC) are just kinda dumb
what does having both look like? re-reading the same single book front-to-back for 40 years?
>>25458170then i guess im kinda dumb.
>>25458170>don't actually enjoy reading (in which case why are you doing it to begin with?)>Duuuurrrrrr don't tryy to learn to enjoy reading broooo just play video gaaaammeeesPeople who grew up with books and never had to learn how to enjoy books should keep out of threads like this, yet they never are able to parrot this dumb shit again and again
>>25458194don't feel too bad, admitting this already puts you ahead of half the people on this board
>>25458199>just play video gaaaammeeesthere's like a dozen or so other hobbies you could do that're "good for you" other than reading (drawing, hiking, etc.). forcing yourself to do something you clearly hate to impress people online makes you an idiot
>>25458170>A) don't actually enjoy reading (in which case why are you doing it to begin with?)>B) have fried your brain with shortform internet content>or>C) are just kinda dumbErrmmmmmmm all oF the abOve?!?! fmllllllllllllLlllll
>>25458150I was going to post this exact question until you stole it from me.
>>25458150You dont have ADHD. Stop using it as an excuse. Tell yourself "if I dont read this page in the next 30 minutes I guess I'm just fucking retarded." And I bet you can finish the page then.
>>25458277This shit doesn't work.
>>25458199what the fuck are you on you spastic. Grow the fuck up
>>25458170>don't actually enjoy readingtoo sweeping, it could be that just the subject is not of actual interest. i don't struggle with reading things i'm very interested in but with anything that is just below that level of engagement the adhd behavior in the op manifests soon enough.>>25458154also this, this site in some manners of consumption can rot the attention span, better put it off altogether to play it safe
>>25458170>whole novels across a few days You sweet summer child.
>>25458150What is this eglin AFB meme I keep seeing? Nothing about either of these things are abnormal. Left is regular reading and right is not being focused. It happens to me sometimes, I just stop reading and start again later when I am
>>25458150ADHD is just low IQ and autism is high IQ. I'm a low IQ dumb fuck .>>25458200Being low IQ sucks!
>>25458280Well if you gave up on discipline and will power then maybe get a perscription for Ritalin and become a drug addicted zombie.
>>25458300ADHD doesnt have anything to do with pattern recogntion (iq)
>>25458304>feel bad>hate yourself Like I said, this shit doesn't work.
>>25458311Look asshole. You have two choices: drugs or no drugs. And it looks like you gave up on the no drugs approach. No one here has a secret reading technique that will unfuck your brain. This discussion is over. You're not getting any pity from me.
>>25458150Just practice. Most of the time when people say ADHD makes reading difficult for them they mean they barely read at all and aren't used to it. Reading regularly will make it very easy and you'll slowly get faster. On the other hand, if you really do have severe ADHD, then to reap the benefits of practice you will have to exercise a great deal more of perseverance than the ordinary person. But it's worth it.
>>25458323Whatever man
>I have never learned to train my attention therefore I have this made up disorder and need to take drugs to be normal!!!You are a lazy drug addict.
Vyvanse.
>>25458170>All ADHD means is you have dysregulation regarding attention and avoid unenjoyable activities as a result. So all adults have it?
>>25458170This is true. I even had a psychiatrist remark to me once, "If you're interested enough in something, you will give it your attention."
Try drinking coffee and see how you feel. Relaxed and calm? Likely ADHD and there is your focus hack without a prescription.
>Be me>Forced to pause every couple of words to look up what stuff like saturnine means>No imagination so I'm almost unable to picture what's happening on the page>Find books in general just boring and tedious to sit throughI read here and there, but I don't really get the appeal of books desu. Not to sound like a brainlet, but I think books are an objectively inferior medium compared to movies, TV, video games, and comic books.
>>25458150Just bee yourself and read bro.
>>25458150Listen to instrumental music while reading or just take some adderall.
>>25458150Do heroin.
>>25458304ADHD stim drugs are fucking awesome. Don't confuse them with shitty SSRIs.
>>25458537ADHD drugs can go one of three ways. 1. They make you calm and focused where you can read for hours. 2. They make you calm and focused but insanely horny where you'll be jerking off for hours. 3. They make you more hyper than you've ever been because you were misdiagnosed.
>>25458537you are still a junkie
>>25458595It's jewish pharmacists making money off retards. ADHD simply means you dont swim or run in nature enough.
>>25458595No moreso than everyone that consumes booze and caffeine.
>>25458535
>>25458638and that justifies you to keep doing it?
>>25458445If you can't bother to learn how image based media is turning you into a golem then you deserve to have your agency stolen.
>>25458150walk while reading
>>25458546Generally the second case is temporary and is just because amphetamines cause euphoria if you're just starting or just increased your dose. If you are correctly diagnosed it goes to 1 within about a week.... unfortunately.
>>25458150Unironically start reading light novels, you'll actually want to turn the page. Do not read meme shit like infinite jest just because /lit/ told you to.90% of the time if you are not able to focus on reading, it's because the book is not stimulating enough for you.Nigga you've been tiktokified for so long, you can't just drop into a fucking classic literature and expect your smoothbrain to keep up.Take this reading progression and follow it.Only move to higher level once you're able to sit through a 3 hour+ reading session on the specified material without checking your phone or laptop.Light Novel > Novella > Novels > Classics > Maximalist Epics > Meme shit like philosophy if that's what you're into I guess>>25458300If you know you're low IQ, you're actually not low IQ enough.
>>25458150read books that are interesting to you
>>25458682I want you to name a single book that came out in the past forty years that had the same cultural impact as the first Die Hard movie. I'll wait.
>>25458150You listen on audiobook. It's made for people with genetic defects or Low IQ.
Genuine question. How can you people do anything in life, like a job or studying? If reading a Sanderson book or, God forbid, Dungeon crawler carl for 40 minutes is a tall order?
>>25458761Zoomers, gen alpha or whatever the gens are these days, their brain are rotted because of tiktok, pls undrestand
>>25458745harry potter
>>25458150amphetamines
Work on getting out of your own head then come back to reading. What most people think is ADHD (fake disease) is simply neurosis and a bad attention span due to overstimulation. Doctors didn't discover ADHD, marketers invented it.
>>25458771Being successful does not mean Harry Potter was culturally impactful or good.
>>254587831. It had massive impact on culture 2. Most great films are loose adaptations/heavily influenced by a book the director/writer just readJust because the masses don't recognize the book is what has impacted them because they hadn't read it doesn't mean that it hasn't. Read more and you'll realize everything you see in film and TV you could have read about 2000 years ago. Look at The Odyssey right now, and it's FAR worse than the poem.
>>25458783if you're going to argue that HP didn't have a massive cultural impact then you're just being disingenuous. as to if they were good or not, I haven't read them since they came out and I was a kid, but I remember liking them then and thinking the movies sucked by comparison. haven't re-read them since though, and have no desire to.
>>25458745Die Hard is literally based on a book btw.
Simple: Adderall. Otherwise, I'm unable to focus even on the most enjoyable books. My brain just reads a few sentences then forgets what it just read.
>>25458761The next 2 of 3 generations are doomed. It will take us 100+ years to recover from the effects of brain rot if not more.
>>25458790>Look at The Odyssey right now, and it's FAR worse than the poemFair, but counterpoint: most people don't know even know Jaws, Jurassic Park, Shawshank Redemption, American Psycho, the Warriors, Forrest Gump, and Die Hard, are even based on books because of how thoroughly those films have eclipsed their source material.
epic literature thread about literature. aren't there plenty of reddit boards you sodomites can argue about pills and mental disorders in?
>>25458810The book is still the reason those exist, thus the book shares the cultural impact.
>>25458150You don't. You're screwed. I have a friend with it and he just stopped trying.
>>25458170I have the double diagnosis too but I'm middle aged and back then it wasn't as common.
>>25458779This.Fo for a morning swim in a river.
>>25458170This>>25458150Wrong diagnostics
>>25458745Cultural impact is a spook
>>25458150Be interested in what you're doing.
>>25458150I find that allocating some time to read without worrying about anything else helps. That and going somewhere appropriate to read with a snack. Also I have a rule that I always read at least one page of a book before bed no matter what; The low requirement breaks any hesitation I have for starting and I usually read more.>>25458170>have ADHD>reading The Silmarillion, enjoying it>"The City of Túna">Tuna lol>Oh yeah, I saw some post on 4chan making fun of that>When was the last time I went on /lit/?>When was the last time I went on /biz/?>Oh shit, I haven't checked the stock market for a month>Oh shit, I haven't paid my rent>I should really sort that out. No wait, I'm supposed to be reading right now>Oh shit, I'm supposed to be studying
>>25458150ADHD isn't real, same for most modern mental illnesses. You're either under the influence of a substance or you've never learned discipline. Simple as.
>>25459129that doesn't sound like ADHD. that sounds like your parents failed at raising an adjusted adult
I thought that I had ADHD (I did not). Here what worked for me1. This summer I was without internet for 2 months2. Started eating clean3. Still drinking copious amounts of caffeineI can now read without any issues. Before I just got stuck reading the same sentence fifty times for half an hour and then quit just to repeat the same ritual tomorrow. If you have actual ADHD then get adderall and shut up
>>25459137It's both (in large part due to one parent having ADHD and the other Autism).
>>25458761spending ages 10-25 doing nothing but consuming porn/anime/video games does WONDERS to the developing psyche
>>25459129Take out a sheet of paper and fold it in half. Every time you think of something distracting, write it down. If you want to check /lit/, write that down and when you're done with the reading, you can check /lit/. It was a bit trickier when I was trying to sleep and I was too drowsy to see what I was writing in a dark room, but it still worked at clearing away all those thoughts.
>ConcertaI was diagnosed in 1997 at age 13.
>>25459213I'm so fucking glad I got into reading at 20. Otherwise, I would surely be a full-on retard now instead of only being half retarded.
>>25458150buy meth and microdose it
>>25458445books are inferior in a lot of ways, especially modern slop because any writer worth their salt goes in television or film anyways. so at the least good dialogue is reserved for that medium. There are some good books though, the chore is having to find them. Many people here regurgitate the same shit that are more cerebral than have entertaining plots or pleasant prose. Once you find something you actually are interested in the imagination will happen by default. Looking up random words is fine though.
>>25458170>(and autism)So it balances it out.
It's often because you lack a peace of mind. People and events have too strong of a grip over you.
why not take your meds and change your environment, why do you retards ask this question as if adhd is a terminal illness
>>25458150if you can’t focus you can’t focus. why are you trying to force yourself to read? maybe tackle that question first.
>>25460607is there anything worse than this particular brand of lifeline advice that just straight doesn’t work?can’t concentrate? sit in a quiet room.having anxiety? take deep breaths.it’s like only applicable to those dead-behind-the-eyes people who are perfectly content going to bed at 8pm everyday.
>>25458708This shit helped me so muchBut I still have to policy myself to read small amounts and then write little summaries of what I've read
>>25460675if your meds don't work, change your psychiatrist, you are the only person responsible for making it work, complaining on 4chan won't make you better, if your psychiatrist doesn't help ask chatgpt, do anything, move out of your comfort zone, take a leap of faith and learn something new, it seems like you are not trying since you have so much time to complain
>>25458445You admited by yourself you don't have imagination so surely you can't understand the appeal.
>>25458546if you find yourself horny while on these drugs, then its usually because you are not doing anything meaningful in your life, and by that i mean, you are in a comfort zone, you are not doing something hard that requires focus, these drugs are supposed to be used to wire your brain for focusing on hard things, i don't understand how you retards take them then go back to being unproductive then complain they don't work, wtf are your psychiatrists good for if they can't tell you this, if you want the benefits of these drugs, you have to completely change your environment and habits, if you find yourself horny, pay for a prostitute every week instead of jerking off every few hours, do something with a long term goal
>>25458150>How to focus while reading if you have ADHD?find book worth focusing onpic rel maybee :3
>>25460759here’s my think piece on drugs: every drug should be recreational. none should be for productivity or ‘getting through the day’ (unless it’s one particular day or one particular project). coffee should be drank at 10pm not 7 in the morning. uppers should be taken in a loud room not a quiet one. codeine should be taken out of boredom not back pain. buy the ticket take the ride basically.
>>25460791yours is a toddler's understanding of how the brain works, you can't establish long term habits by using drugs recreationally, that's just a copout from doing hard, boring and necessary work
>>25460809>toddler's understandingi prefer artistic temperament. >doing hard, boring and necessary workshakespeare (ever heard of him?) said:Fall to them as you find your stomach serves you,No profit grows where is no pleasure taken.
>>25460817i am talking about people who struggle doing basic things like reading while you are talking about shakespeare?
>>25460843you’re clearly struggling to string together a sentence. what is this non sequitur? that quote couldn’t be any more applicable.
>>25460854you may think yourself very elegant for quoting shakespeare on /lit/ but you are terribly out of touch for making it in an adhd thread
>>25460918am i missing something - what’s the contention?
What is the obsession people have with forcing themselves to do shit that stresses them out? Drawing, reading, music, these fucking hobbies are plagued with Howies who just can't make their fingers brains and eyes obey their commands, gee, have you ever stopped to think that maybe you don't want to do these things? Who the fuck told you to contort yourself into a pretzel over this? Just do something else for fuck's sake and stop giving yourself psychosis just because you didn't like Moby Dick.
>>25458283>Flanders is a zionist fagtracks.
>>25461978you are either the biggest retard or making the deepest /pol/tard cut ever
>>25458150>need a new psychiatrist for my ADHD meds>go to one that's supposed to be good>tell him I like reading>"if you have ADHD, how do you read?">stand up and walk outThe idea that people with ADHD can't focus is totally false. People with ADHD need to be constantly engaged with new information. If that information isn't interesting, they disengage whether they want to or not. If you can't focus on the book, you don't find it engaging enough. Either try at another time, or find something to read you enjoy more.
If I can focus a lot more if I gas myself out on a morning swim does that mean I have ADHD?
>>25462108Nope. Thats normal.
