Hijacking this thread to ask: how does one go about becoming an essayist? The American education system conditioned me into falling for the 5 paragraph MLA essay meme but other than that I have 0 experience with writing essays. I've read a few of them from magazines at work and they all seem to be well structured and able to tell a narrative without sounding too preachy about it. How does one learn this superpower? Are there any books one should read if one wants to become an essayist?

That's what I see missing from most school essays nowadays. Also honest self-critique and a meta-consideration of the disadvantages and alternatives.
