The reason why people think fanfiction is low quality is because of pretension and that publishers and editors are gods gift to hacks that can polish any turd into being passible.

>>25459902I actually got my start writing fanfiction.This was back in the day when the IGN Message Boards were in full swing. I think I was 13 at the time. I was a frequent poster on their Pokemon board, and it was very trendy back then to write Pokemon fanfics, based on either the anime or the games, and post them in threads on the board.So I got an idea in my head for a story, and started a thread for it, and began to write it, posting it in installments as I banged it out.I didn't go into it expecting any particular audience, but to my surprise, most of the board started to read the story, and I got dozens of comments from users saying how much they were enjoying it. That was the first time I realized that, not only did I really enjoy writing fiction, it seemed as though other people tended to like what I'd written.I've never looked back since. I maintained a Fanfiction.net profile for years. These days I've basically given fanfiction up, and moved on entirely to original fiction. But I'll never begrudge my time as a fanfic writer. It helped make me the artist I am today.

>>25460208Well, thanks to reading, practice, and effort, I think I'm constantly getting better. I consistently feel that my best work is still ahead of me. I think the stuff I put out is still pretty good, but I always feel like I can improve.So: when I look back on the older stuff, the old fanfics, I definitely see flaws that I wouldn't have made if I were writing such a story today. But I do still think a lot of it is readable, at the very least.In particular I seem to have always had a knack for enjoyable plotlines and character interactions, and these will still carry a lot of my fanfics that suffer from a lack of technical skill and higher levels of expertise. I've basically always been able to spin a good yarn and write a good character interaction.

theres this old pokemon fanfiction on ffnet called The Reaper. its clearly a product of autism and insecurity about being a young conservative on the internet around 2016, but it is some of the most captivating and consistently creative shit ive ever read in my life, although thats partially because i grew up playing the gen3/4 pokemon games on loop. its a combination of like furry harem romance, well-researched military thriller, scifi and pokemon adventure, and it sounds like a chaotic clusterfuck on paper but the reading experience is shockingly good. most published authors cannot get me to keep reading the way The Reaper does. the reaction i had to reading that story got me out of a depressive episode and compelled me to read everything from like Joyce to CS textbooks to obscure fanzines since it proved to me, in a real way, that if you look hard enough, there really are gems in the Indian Ocean full of trash and shit out there. ive been an eccentric independent art junkie ever since. highly recommend

Often feuded with much more prominent Sonic fan writers because I didn’t consider their work “real” fan fiction since it relied so heavily on OCs. At that point it was just an original work pretending to be fanfic whereas I focused on Sonic and the core characters. My OCs were limited to disposable villains and side characters. Now that I think about it, I was right. It’s not fan fiction if it’s all OCs.

Sometimes, I go way back to the beginning of my own story and I read it through for pleasure, as if I didn't know the next word or that I wrote it, and since I consider my writing subpar I suppose that is the only "lesser literature" I've been reading.
