Was it literary to be a “basement dwelling NEET” before the advent of modernity?

It was an aristocratic type of life, is what it was, like Aleister Crowley, Arthur Conan Doyle, Gustave Dore or HG Wells. Lovecraft would have fit right in with the likes of the Hellfire Club or the Golden Dawn.

Anon I hate to break it to you, if you have aspirations of being a writer yourself, but you basically cannot be a serious writer and a wagie simultaneously.

People talk about needing "time to write." But it's more than that. It's more than time spent at the keyboard or the typewriter banging away. A writer needs time for his mind to air out. For his thoughts to wander, to be inspired, to have a random thought that leads somewhere interesting when he starts to follow it, and to have the time to do the following, too.

The constraints of earning a living squish your brain and make this sort of mental freedom difficult, if not impossible.

There's a very good reason all the great writers and poets you have read were either rich themselves, or had patrons who paid for their living expenses. At best, you get somebody like Goethe who works a job that stresses very little and pays a great deal. You cannot be a wagie and a great artist.

>but Bukowski

I repeat myself.

Would you say a serious writer must have a room of one's own?

For a lot of the greats writing was their job. You weren’t a NEET, you were closer to a freelancer.

PDT, in fact.
