>raping
>his own wife
Huh?
I don’t understand what you mean.
>>
>>25463461
Please kill yourself
>>
>>25463447
I read it and it was pretty boring. I think the intended audience are lit students, if you're not a lit student who won't go he's just like me fr fr then the book falls pretty flat
>>
>>25463470
That’s not a very nice thing to say. Why can’t you explain it to me? I just don’t understand how he can be raping his own wife.
>>
>>25463475
he's a satanist thinking that consent matters in that context
>>
>>25463480
But she did consent, she’s his wife already isn’t she? I’m still struggling to understand this.
>>
>>25463452
>raping
>his wife
>>
>>25463447
Is it about stoning infidels?
>>
>>25463486
Don't bother. Women desiring autonomy is ontologically evil. It leads to lesbianism and abortion.

The ending was meh.
>>
>>25463452
Why was she so awful
>>
>>25463826
It ended in the way he lived his life. In bland unremarkablity, but in a peace and comfort that he didnt have regrets (although he should have)

I think it has a lot of themes going on, but simply put I would say that the presentation of Stoner's life and death point to his inaction as the source of his woes, and the only glimmer of hope he ever had was when he stood up and did something for his own sake.
His work far removed from his farm origins is actually parallel in that he is toiling away day after day with his task like a farmer resided to the eternal need for food, rather than any grand teleogical goal.
He isn't slowly putting together a work that will change the world, he isn't trying to add beauty or genius to the world like the people he studies and lectures on.
In a shorter timespan, though more melodramatic, there is a similarity with Dosto's The Idiot, where Myshkin is well meaning and filled with virtues like Stoner, but ultimately fails in delivering any positive outcome and stopping the evil/injustices happening around him.
Stoner is similar in that he's a good man but not a great man, and his life reflects it.
That may be enough for some people, but that unspoken injustice and whimper of a legacy speaks to the reader that they must seize the day somehow more successfully than he did.

inshallah

I read it last year but I was more interested in his mentor teacher who was anti-war. I wanted more of that character.

Naw this is what techpeepoo want for us in the metaverse

>>25463826
>>25463835
Exactly. A meh story where the moral of the story is meh. A cautionary tale? Well like Brave New World, where some think it's a utopian, maybe you want this kind of meh life.
>>
>>25463447
he had a nice gig desu

>noooo i get paid to read books all day
his wife was a bitch? so are 90% of women today. as a zoomer i'd kill for a stable tenure job and house of my own with a wife'

>no meaning
today our meaning is serving as a node in a data web designed by pedophiles in silicon valley and washington. our meaning is feudalism with extra steps and monitored by a panopticon watching for you to make any wrong move so they can ice you in the street
>>
>>25468651
You miss the point, but that’s typical of your generation. You’re the same lot who look at Office Space as something to envy. Your gen expects the world to reward you for the mere fact of existing, so you all will end up like Stoner watching life pass you by without reacting to anything, resigning yourselves and settling for a mediocre risk-free existence.
>>
>>25463826
I teared up at the way he was describing his own dying
>>
>>25463447
He rapes his wife, Edith.
>>
>>25468651
>his wife was a bitch?
Just a bitch? She turned her child into an alcoholic and used her to torture stoner throughout the novel. That's a horrible human being not just a bitch
>>25463828
I don't get either. She was really awful and wasn't really explained more than just "I didn't have a career because of you loser"
>>25468670
I kinda got that from the book too. It's a reflection on a mediocre life by a mediocre man. He just takes way too much shit from people and doesn't go beyond what's "right" to get what he wants. Even when he steps up he gets btfo by anyone cause his mildness won't let him tell people to go fuck themselves. It's sad because Stoner isn't a bad dude or anything like that and he's had a hard life, but god is he an idiot

why did his daughter turn into a whore?
>>
>>25471329
Living in that house. Constant fighting and noise. Absent father. Lack of good examples and role models. Nothing to live for or look up too (except from vague memories of very early childhood).

>And he felt also, with that breath he took, a shifting somewhere deep inside him, a shifting that stopped something and fixed his head so that it would not move. Then it passed, and he thought, So this is what it is like. It occurred to him that he ought to call Edith; and then he knew that he would not call her. The dying are selfish, he thought; they want their moments to themselves, like children.

yes but how do these experiences lead one to whore out?
why not become the weird loner or permaneet or suicidal femcel instead?
she did become the drunkard but being a whore isnt a necessary prerequisite for that
what exactly was the mechanism that clicked in her brain for her to go: yeah i wanna feel empowered?
>>
>>25463828
>>25469618
daddy issues + delusional and ambiguous expectations of what her marriage should be like. even if her expectations were met she wouldn't be happy because she took everything for granted
>>
>>25471737
A combination of self-abuse (similar to one cutting themselves in order to feel something), hedonistic pleasure (nothing higher to live for like family values or marriage, so why not), and receiving some sort of “appreciation”.
>>
>>25463822
Imagine for a moment that women are people. If they are people it means that your will is all the greater if you impose it on them. That's why you rape Edith.
