what does /lit/ think of Michael Shaara's classic Civil War novel?
>>25463672I never knew Southerners made black twinks dance in dresses around the campfire.
>>25463672On my To Read list, although some way from the top. I wouldn't mind hearing an opinion or two.
I had to read it in high school. I remember enjoying it at the time, but can’t recall many details now.
Can I read this without knowing much about the Civil War?
>>25463672the writing is awfulI read a bit hoping to 1) learn about the ACW as a non-American, and 2) enjoy a bit of human historical drama. on both counts I was disappointed. YMMV
>>25463890Yes, all characters are introduced properly in annotations>>25463924the book is about Gettysburg in specific, and even then, I'd say it leaves out some of the best parts of that battle out of the story--saying this as someone who enjoyed this novel
>>25463672I think its excellent, you can safely ignore anyone who says its poorly written.
>>25463672Just watch gettysburg instead
I think it's a great novel, what really annoys me is how this book is marketed as the middle part of a 'trilogy' with Jeff Shaara's inferior books.
>>25463682Its one of the best of its kind, I wish more authors would write self-contained novels about military campaigns.
