Why are we banning authors?

I get /grrm/ exists, but none of the other authors have their own threads, and if we made a thread for every single 'banned author' we'd overrun the entire board with seething autists who hate all scifi and fantasy and don't think it's real literature

I agree, but Miller clearly gets the most direct focus, for how nothing of a character he is. Even more than Holden he's a character with virtually no motivations or values, and the motivations he gets are arbitrary (Julie) somebody will mention that "he cares about Belter life" but thats not a motivation, or a character or a person. Thats a byproduct of the fact that hes our most direct access POV to the belt, while also needing to be a character that receives enough information about the questions surrounding everything going on, so that they can be dripfed at a pace the reader can find interesting.

"He's radical because he noted that he didnt care that somebody got lynched for not cleaning filters properly" but that doesnt matter, I almost forgot about that infact because Miller tends to express things in such a matter of fact way, that it leaves no impression, theres no deeper thought or dwelling, and when I say "deep" I don't even mean the standard of actually being philosophically, scientifically, academically rich. I simply means "Miller doesn't think beyond the surface level on the judgements, or happenings of the society he lives in"

"He cares about Julie because she represents the rebelious, gutsy, person who cares that he isnt" All this suggests is that Julie is a more interesting character than Miller, it only makes sense when you take Miller as a representation of something, not as an actual person. People don't work like that in real life. Life is so much more complicated than that. You can love somebodys ideals, love that they represent what you lack, and never romantically love that person. But I guess thats the thing about "love" we don't actually know whether Miller loves Julie, or whether its just an infatuation, or obsession, or what. But I'd argue thats the very problem. We dont actually understand the nature of anything about how Miller feels about things because theres no depth to it. We can't dwell on the nuances of "attraction" the distinctions of love vs infatuation, because Miller doesn't give enough to do that. Isn't that lacking?

I'm not even arguing to criticize the book anymore. I'm just arguing against all the people trying to imply that Miller is somehow a better character than Holden. I've seen this sentiment on reddit too, a lot of people like Miller for some reason and seem to have the impression that the series lost something when he dies (I only know this from the TV show) and I was also among those perspectives, when I watched the show. But thats because I don't remember the show doing this with Miller.

When you hyperfocus on a character, put them under a microscope, and try to find what makes up that character, you also run the risk of revealing that theres not actually much there. And thats really my problem with Miller, we're stuck in his head for like 50 chapters, and Holden is basically along the ride, and its virtually useless because Miller is not interesting.
>>
I've already expressed my theory in the last thread. But my theory is that what people like about Miller isnt actually Miller. Its the fact that all the information about what we want to know about the story, passes through his perspective. We learn the OPA had something to do with Julie through him. We learn that the OPA is working with Ceres through him, We learn that Julies parents knew something through him. We learn that OPA had nothing to do with the 6 ships that fucked the Donnager through him. Holden is in the heart of it, but these things are basically happening to him by accident, Miller is who puts it all together.

Anyone know of any books/series featuring a female witch protagonist that are NOT historical fiction? I kind of just want a female protagonist that uses magic, ideally witch-flavored, but I'm willing to accept a lot of leeway there. Kind of like Vin from Mistborn for a well-known example that isn't quite what I'm talking about, but would be in the same broader category of what I want. I like this type of story in stuff like anime/manga but I haven't read normal books much like it. When I try to search for these types of stories, all I can find are Twilight-esque historical fantasy set in various American/British time periods. Seems like there are very few completely constructed fantasy worlds with witch protagonists compared to "boy with sword" or "wizard school boy" ones.

What's the best science fiction or fantasy novel ever written in Pidgin English?
>>
>>25464596
He seemed fine at first if you could get past the Anthony Birch style writing but since around book 7 he has obviously become a genuine fag. I had inklings when we always let Donut go to the Penis Parade but we were never allowed inside Bitches. When male stripper NPCs became side characters instead of female strippers it was alarming. When the female strippers were only ever described as horrifying I was perturbed. Then there was
>the artists had the temerity to draw a female character who didn’t give him an instant erection
Which is mega fag territory to even commit to print. At this point there are mostly only ever girlbosses introduced as npcs or side characters. I thought this might be Dinniman trying not to have men take the spotlight from Carl but now he outright says Carl is being left in the dust by the likes of Donut and Li Na. The mechanic for the cars is a girlboss cunt, the car is a girlboss cunt. In book 6 Dinniman had Sister Ines girlbossing with the two male prisoners subservient. Donut just gave Prepotente a lecture about not making a sex slave.
I could go on and on. It is a common thread. He always does it. He is just a mega giga fag.

Just finished Chapter 33, and Holden is definitely a worse character if for no other reason than how confident he is about making hastey, uninformed, stupid judgements. Which the book has reiterated enough that that is clearly the point, because nobody stops him even when they point it out, or are right. To the point that it borders on contrivance. Holden just ignored Millers whol argument of broadcasting information that Earth could be involved even though he doesn't know for sure by going "But da people gots ta know, you can't do things if its all out there" like some brainrotted retarded conspiracy theorist that doesn't understand why a government would withhold information during a pandemic until theyre sure, so that retards dont raid every single supermarket for their toilet paper. He never addressed Millers point, just appealed to an empty platitude about information.

Everybody "knowing" the Mars shot the Cantebury certainly aided in preventing Eros being infected...oh wait. (To be fair the book tries to make it seem like it wouldnt matter either way since the riot gear got stolen before Julie was even on the Scopuli) It didnt, because the information was incomplete and served nobody by going to the public rather than people with better resources to properly unravel whats going on.

I don't care anymore. I don't like stupid characters and will not tolerate stupid characters doing stupid things to drive the plot forward lazily. Not a single person on the ship should allow Holden to do the retarded shit he wants to do, thats really the biggest problem, especially Miller who firsthand had to deal with the Chaos that created.

Also how fucking convenient the geniuses at Tycho couldnt decrypt the cube and figure anything out but the supercomputer on Roci, and Holden/Miller could.

I am not mad yet. I am not mad yet. This is the kind of stupid contrived shit tv shows love to get away with, love to let their MC do stupid shit with zero accountability as if an external world doesnt actually exist with its own interests to resist, until its convenient to introduce conflict for the sake of provoking the most base of humans to feel something.

>I want to read the Expanse
at least the first book is excellent SF, albeit quite fast-paced
as I said, the instant I read it I knew it was made for TV. I could identify the moment each episode ended, and even the commercial breaks. whenever I reached the end of the chapter I could hear that stupid generic "dramatic moment and then cut to black" sound effect they use
that being said, I enjoyed the 1st book very much, and I was happy enough to read the next couple of books

I will grant that you have a point
that being said, you didn't answer the two questions I posed
>Can you suggest a novel with better characterisation?
>What further info about Miller would you want to know, in order to see him as a more rounded character?
which are important because the question arises, in a nearly-200,000-word SF novel, you can only spend so many words describing so much of Miller's backstory leading up to this point, how much more do you need to know?
the shortcut is to give well-known examples, please do that
>When Miller brings up the story about how he first killed somebody on the job at 22, it does nothing, because there werent enough dimensions
you are jumping into his life in medias res, there is a lot of backstory you'd have to deduce, and in this case a deduction from general human sentiment is valid

>>25466846
>We can't dwell on the nuances of "attraction" the distinctions of love vs infatuation, because Miller doesn't give enough to do that
likewise we have enough information to deduce that he's infatuated with the idealised résumé of Julie rather than what she really is as a person, because he's never friggin MET her
we don't need to know Miller's entire life story in detail to know that
>>
>>25466809
It's pretty good, but it's also genreslop. Abnett writes "mature" capeshit, and this is no exception. If you like that (I did, FWIW), go for it.

If not, try Infinite & Divine for 40k as a comedy for unaffected observers, or 15 Hours for grimdark srs bizniz.

Hammers Slammers offers better "bolter porn" and there are plenty of other better "serious grimdark" scifi if that's what you're looking for. But 40k is a decent setting (becoming worse over time). Space Wolf and Night Lords series are better for "classic" 40k.

I'm not giving examples because thats just not how writing works to me. For one I wouldn't give an example of a well integrated backstory because I know other examples where you can do the same without a backstory. Also the problem isnt what they did, its how much time they wasted trying to do anything at all, because it dispelled the facade and exposed the character as more shallow than the reader needed to believe.

>we don't need to know Miller's entire life story in detail to know that

I just finished Neuromancer and I thought it was pretty bad.
>never get time to digest a location before moving on to the next one
>most plot development occurs in the first and last 20%, middle is largely pointless
>unclear what is going on a lot of the time
>characters are introduced and then disappear
>virtually no character development, we find out Molly is a former prostitute when Case finds her in the brothel where she worked, unclear why she returned to a brothel she no longer works at
>in the penultimate scene, all hope is lost but fortunately the bad guys are stupid and accidentally attack each other, allowing Case to gain the upper hand
>Riviera character exists just to be edgy, switch sides for no reason, and enable the above
>token rasta
I understand why the terminology and some themes were influential but it sucks as a story.

Really now.
>but now he outright says Carl is being left in the dust by the likes of Donut and Li Na
Li Na is out.
Carl and Donut have been playing catch-up with each other since the beginning. Donut's new super-duper war-crime spell is overpowered shit but at least she's still a glass cannon.
That being said, Carl shouldn't be the strongest crawler anyway (neither should Donut).

seemed like a pretty on-the-nose callout of all the RR slop (and indeed animes/mangas and similar) that does exactly that to me. like, what's the most banal thing you could do to an animal/boss monster? make them a sexy woman who wants to fuck you. I don't think pointing out that doing this every time is pretty cringe is necessarily gay.

although, me personally, I would of course have made it into a sexy woman regardless of whether it's cringe or not.

He should heckin' subvert the joke by having Carl fall genuinely in love with her, somehow. And then he could non-subvert our expectations that he will feel bad about this, and have Carl refuse to take advantage of her. And then he could have yet another inane interpersonal tragedy that ends in yet more tragedy. Man, this almost sounds like something he would do, now that I'm typing it out. Why did Michael Moorcock dislike Dune? It's basically the same genre of sci-fi as what he, J.G. Ballard and Norman Spinrad were writing at the time. Is it because Frank was an American? Also I feel like the comparisons with Dune to LoTR are just because those are the only two fantasy normies people have read. They don't have much in common aside from a shared Wagner's Ring influence.

I'm guessing the point of that exchange is Carl and Donut made an arguably bad call and they'll have to face some comeuppance for it in the next book. Because in the grand scheme of things they all do a lot worse. The only real argument they had against it is they can't afford to have Pony waste time supporting a level 1 crawler with a blood bar on endgame levels, which makes him the party's bitch.

Most the 40K books assume that you have at least a basic understanding of the core concepts of the setting. Such as the size and nature of the imperium (galactic, fractured, and technologically backwards), that aliens exist and are all assholes, the imperial creed (they worship the emprah), the nature of chaos (ideas and emotions become real in the other-world know as the "warp" and sometimes penetrate into realspace to fuck shit up), etc. If you don't know any of these things, you will probably be slightly confused, but most the books are also small enough in scope that it shouldn't matter. You may not know how the warp works, but you can figure out from context that e.g., a "psyker" is basically a dark sci-fi wizard who does magic.

Oh, so it's a prison basically. That you could never escape from because you move at 1/5000000th of the speed outside of it or something. Harsh. But you'd never really wanna look inside of that thing, right? Since it's moving at 1/5000000th normal speed, so nothing ever happens. And you'd never go inside since then you'd be stuck too. I guess you'd look inside every millions years or something, just to be safe.

For all my points about Miller, at the very least he isnt retarded. But now im even more skeptical. Im remembering another scifi series I read not long ago, where I had to tolerate the convenient unchecked stupidity of a main character contrivantly driving a shit plot forward as if everything revolved around him. And I remember while reading that book, how because of how desperate I was to not believe that the book was shit. I would blatantly tolerate stupidity, because I thought the fact that another character acknowledged that stupidity was enough to believe that rendered the action tolerable. Admittedly in this case, Miller isnt merely acknowledging, he is challenging the retarded main character, but the point is that I am losing confidence because of what this song and dance reminds me of.

If there's anything that would actually stop me continuing the Expanse it would be this single page. Not anything Holden or Miller said. It would be this single page. This is a level of bad that is close to and unique to how Terra Ignota handles any dilemmas. Which means that it is a waste of my time actually explain the problem, since anybody reading this would be too stupid, and more importantly too obnoxious to respond in anyway that isn't triggering. My faith was wavering. But its just about nearly killed. There is one single thing. One thing alone holding me on. And of all things possible, its a reddit comment I read while doing research on this series, that was defending one of the sequels that the reddit thread rated Iowly because (paraphrasing) while characters in past books would talk about religion and philosophy why knowing or understanding nothing about it, that one sequel, (not sure exactly which one but it was early enough to be book 2 or 3) actually addressed it more properly and thoroughly.

The question here is. How much longer do I tolerate stupid, characters with all the power and moral authority to make genuinely retarded, like genuinely retarded if you can think with your head for longer than 10 seconds and follow the implications the train of thought displayed here leads to, thats the thing thats making me angry too, I am posting this here, while knowing that none of you are capable of following that train of thought, no other context is needed here, everything is given in the screenshot, and it would still be easy to point out the problem. And something about that fact, the idea that this is probably written this way, and tolerated because the average reader doesn't care enough to hear something more interesting, with a little bit more thought. The problem isnt being "wrong". When Danlo in The Broken God was "wrong" it wasnt a travesty to read, because Old Father would engage in a discussion that explored the limits of Danlo's thinking enough, that we werent just left with the narrowness and one dimensionality of Danlo's thought alone.

Sure maybe you want to say "Not all books can be written that specific way where its just two character sitting in the same room talking about ideas based on their experience" (even though thats literally what these two characters are doing in Leviathan Wakes, and what every character in every book ever does, but yes I get it, thats not the "focus" the plot must "go on!" it cant stop, unless its for lingering in the mind of the most simple people's ever with no pushback from anybody intelligent because the main characters cannot be undermined lest by their nakama) part of the exact and explicit reason I dont give examples is because I acknowledge this fact, and also dont want to bother with the retard who thinks hes intelligent for being capable of pointing out that "two things are different".

Whatever. I'm just frustrated. I don't know if I can let one redditor pull me to a 2nd book.

>I like the romance in the smut but the actual smut is boring
I have a similar experience with smut. the romance parts can be very cute, but the smut always feels absurd (not that I've read a lot, but the little I have read). all I've read is harem stuff read by women, though. I suspect women can't write harem. they write the man like a woman (e.g., changing preferences between partners, instead of imposing his upon all of them). so it's pretty lame. they also get boring pretty fast, as the man turns into a sort of mindless golden retriever-style creature, that just happily does what its "supposed" to do all of the time (even protecting the women against non-sexual threats when they are being retarded and wrong and their arguments make absolutely no sense; he will still take the woman's side against e.g., her brother, in situations where a man 100% would be on the brother's side). but I digress.

I read and liked Dunsany and I would agree with you that that is an exception where its actually worth reading for the writing itself.

As sloppa as it sounds though Planet of Adventure had cool/new ideas and I am a novelty seeking individual.

After reading The Narrow Land which was really unique, I went there.

Lyonnaise however seems like something I would have read at 13, a plotfag book borrowing all its ideas from things which I've already encountered.
Though, I'm not arrogant enough to disregard a vast portion of the crowd calling it his best.

I've been reading the Culture series for little more than a year now, and I've hit my end with this book. And all because of faults which have been there since "Use of Weapons" or "Excession"

Speaking for "Matter" specifically. You have 2-3 plots going on, only two of which are interesting. The one with more advanced aliens talking and scheming between each other. And the other, less entertaining one, the fuckboy prince, would-be king, trying to escape his assassins.

The third plot, the princess who's now a Culture spy, is nothing one hasn't read before in the Culture.
"Wow everyone is so healthy!"
"Wow everything is so pretty!"
Wow these Minds sure are weird!"
For that matter Banks writes female main character badly. They're all confident in their skills, somewhat detached from wider society and always somehow beautiful in their ways. Modern "girlbosses," just a bit less obnoxious about it. They aren't bad on a single-case basis, but so many of them?

As for Banks' prose. It's doable. It's clearly understandable and gets the job done without confusing me too much. But I find my eyes slowly sliding by each word if I read his books for too long, as if they all string together too smoothly, words blending in with one another.

Maybe I'll read Hyperion Cantos now

>The Demon Star, by Jesse Aragon
This book was just okay, and not worth the hype it's getting. Spoilers within.

The main characters are all pretty stupid and ruled by their emotions. One is a lame telepath priest who's always drunk because he feels guilty about turning his demon-worshipping student in, who was executed afterwards. The other is a woman who was "harvested" by the evil gods a decade before, but she escaped, got possessed by a demon that heals any injury she gets, then gave birth to a son that she abandoned and feels guilty about.
The story gets going when the boy's father (who is a total piece of shit) realizes that "gods that regularly demand human sacrifices" are bad, actually, and sends the his son into the desert to find an ultra-powerful demon to kill the bad gods. The woman goes after him, the son gets possessed, and things escalate from there.
There are no good people in the book. The mother uses her demon-possessed son as political leverage among le resistance, manipulates the priest into going along, and turns a blind eye to massacres. The priest commits massacres. The evil gods (who are aliens btw) are cartoonishly evil, as is the human church.
They main characters commit atrocity after atrocity, killing tens of thousands of their own people by the end of the story, justifying it with the logic that anything is worth it to increase the chances of winning. There were ways to avoid doing that, but with lower odds of success, so atrocity it was.
The threesome was also annoying.

It's hard to tell if the book was trying to say "defeating evil with evil isn't worth it", since they just replaced one evil god with another. That would redeem it somewhat, but it's not clear if this was intentional or just another part of the author's story.

3/5, forgettable.

I tried player of games. and it's amazing. I will finish them all. this series or author is not generally known for prose but it's fine for me. Concepts in general are pretty cool and interesting. Set in anarcho communist post scarcity money less genderless society (perfect utopia). Now what?

There wasn't much else to the book, sadly.
>>
>>25470578
I'd say Player of Games, the book goes more into detail on a genuinely alien civilisation and there's less stupid side-plots to detract from the main story.
There's also Inversions which takes place entirely in a medieval setting albeit with a Culture character who does use Culture technology from time-to-time. It has only two alternating plots and they're not bad either. To not spoil too much one's a doomed romance plot and the other is an assassination.

>>25470675
>perfect anarchist society
>ruled by infallible, ineffable communist super AI's
Hold on a sec, so you're telling me this: anarcho communist post-scarcity money-less genderfull society is ONLY possible when effectively ruled by superhuman intellects ergo it isn't possible for a human (only) society?
What could Iain M. Banks, famed anarchist author, possibly have meant by this?

>The start of a rollicking, unputdownable LitRPG series that Matt Dinniman calls “pure gold” in which everyone on Earth is forced to take part in a worldwide survival competition—everyone, including Meghan Moretti and her three lovably chaotic kids.

>Picture this: You’re home with your three kids, racing to get soccer uniforms washed ahead of practice when the power shuts off. Your cell phone goes dead. And a voice coming from nowhere and everywhere all at once booms:

>Congratulations! Your planet has been selected!

>And just like that, Earth becomes the newest unwilling participant in a high-stakes intergalactic game show competition. What that means becomes terrifyingly clear as monsters drop onto the front lawn, an interface appears in your field of vision, and you—and your nine- and six-year-old sons and three-year-old daughter—are each offered a choice of supernatural abilities.

>Part of you wants to laugh. Your husband’s away on business, coming home late tonight. Well, he was. But you clamp down on your rising panic. It doesn’t matter how much harder it will be. You’re a mom. Your kids need you; it’s up to you to keep them safe. You can do this.

>Then, in quick succession, you discover: 1) your toddler has unilaterally decided her supernatural power should be for her beloved turtle stuffie to come alive. 2) every person on Earth will have to fight, no matter their age. You're going to have to teach your kids to stand on their own—and yourself to let them.

>This is Meghan Moretti’s morning, and where Erin Ampersand’s rollicking, unputdownable LitRPG adventure series, Apocalypse Parenting, begins.

I've just come back from a stop at Barnes & Noble, while out on some errands, and the fantasy section there is a wasteland. I hardly recognize any of the authors in the section, now. I sifted through new names to find something that wasn't either litrpg or romantasy and gave up after about 30 minutes, finding it too depressing to continue.

At this point the only reason I'd ever set foot back in a B&N is if I needed to update my print copy of Lord of the Rings for something with terrible cover artwork. For now, the likes of Tolkien, Martin, Jordan, Hobb, and even Tad Williams still cling to the section, but for how much longer?
