It's better understood as a process of social deracination of the working class and virtually all workers in service economies have been lumpenized to some extent, including the remaining 10-15% still engaged in Fordist factory labor. The exceedingly wealthy have also been lumpenized as a byproduct of this.This isn't to say that Lumpen isn't a useful concept (in the 60's, the Black Panthers attempted to consciously ally with the Lumpen and it destroyed them) but it isn't as clear-cut as mapping the concept onto modern culture war discussions.
