Gatsby might be my most disliked book that I've ever finished. Maybe I should read it as an adult though.
Fitzgerald was always incredibly uneven, owing to his lifestyle and the pace at which he wrote. But his finest, like Gatsby--which he labored years to complete--and some of the short stories, are the finest in American literature and put putative masters like Steinbeck deep in the shade.

The characters in The Great Gatsby feel like they could have really existed while East of Eden feels like they are serving the setting and themes of the story rather than having their own independent lives.
