>>25467451chapter 1 is probably the greatest chapter ever written in US history.
>>25467451The Great Fagsby (OP)
>>25467461Fitzgerald was writing what he knew. A lot of what is being cirticized in the book are things he himself experienced especially in his relationship and have been effectively ruining his chance at happiness.
>>25467451Gatsby is, if anything, underrated. It’s immaculate.
>>25468942every american book, even if it’s actually very good, is inevitably overrated.
>>25468677>>25468942Wtf are you smoking? As a non-american it is fucking boring dreck. You're a weird people. You have steinbeck and faulkner, both geniuses and yet instead you thrust hemingway and fitzgerald onto the world.

>>25469010the themes of The Great Gatsby are quintessentially AmericanSteinbeck was a pessimistic socialist and Faulkner was a southern hillbilly
Gatsby might be my most disliked book that I've ever finished. Maybe I should read it as an adult though.
Fitzgerald was always incredibly uneven, owing to his lifestyle and the pace at which he wrote. But his finest, like Gatsby--which he labored years to complete--and some of the short stories, are the finest in American literature and put putative masters like Steinbeck deep in the shade.
>>25469472Steinbeck is great at painting a picture with his prose but Fitzgerald in my opinion is better at writing characters. The characters in The Great Gatsby feel like they could have really existed while East of Eden feels like they are serving the setting and themes of the story rather than having their own independent lives.
>>25467451the GG book had a reference to Stoddards Rising Tide of Color
>>25469758Wow. Just as retarded as he made it sound.
