Reading the book written wholly in nadsat is much more interesting than just characters using Russian words sometimes. I thought the movie was solid, but everything I've heard about the book makes it sound much more interesting and less like some demented amusement park (which is ultimately how I feel many book-to-film adaptations go, but that's a story for another time).
>>25467888I like the movie a lot but for all the praise it gets for being this masterclass in psychological portrayal, I thought it was kinda hokey and cheesy that Jack is already going crazy like 20 minutes into the film. Seeing Jack's slow descent into madness over the course of hundreds of pages is arguably the main appeal of the entire story. The movie just doesn't understand suspense and build-up nearly as well as the book, though I will say the final act is done better by Kubrick than by King imo, the moment Wendy discovers the typewriter the movie becomes 10/10 and stays 10/10.

Stop whatever you're doing and read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick. It's not only the novel that was adapted into 1983's "Blade Runner", but it was the beginning of the cyberpunk genre, way back in 1969. The movie only covers one of the novel's four interweaving plot lines, so you're in for a treat. PKD is my favorite author of all time.
I do not understand why everyone loves the Shining. I have never been able to get more than like halfway through the movie without turning it off.
