Was the interracial cuckold scene really necessary? Moreover, implicitly inviting the neighbours to watch by keeping the blinds up, and debasing his head-of-the-house authority by dismissing his son's objections to the defilement of his friend/budding love interest, nudges the entire thing into the category of humiliation fetish porn. Not to mention unemployed Rabbit cranking it out to fantasies of his sister getting fucked by a greek wop.
>>25468253Lol wut?I was thinking of starting the books soon but the synopsis of this one sounded like a boomer fantasy, I didn't expect it to be this bad. >Not to mention unemployed Rabbit cranking it out to fantasies of his sister getting fucked by a greek wopThis is kinda based, to be honest. Is Run, Rabbit at least worth reading or is it much of the same?

>>25468265There has been a 10 year gap between writing "Run, Rabbit" and "Rabbit Redux", and this reflects in the latter showcasing Updike's more polished writing and the ability to weave more difficult subjects into the story.I was ready to drop the series after the first book but the time-skip (the book also jumps 10 years forwards), and the focus on the civil rights through the view of a small-town proto-MAGA boomer loser made it a fun read.I'll probably even read the next book, the small-town parochial setting grew on me through the books.
>>25468253Rabbit is the archetypal All-American Asshole. Nothing he does is responsible or justifiable. He's not a role model FFS.
>>25468285Nothin'. What's up with you?
>>25468433I always assumed Rabbit was Updike indulging in a what-if and imaging what his life would have been like as a dumb jock instead of a bookish nerd. It's got just the right balance of sympathy and disdain for his protagonist. If nothing else it's interesting to see an author return to the same setting and characters 4 times over 30 years, reflecting on the changes in his writing and American society. I can't think of many other long-term literary projects like that.
>>25468265Rabbit Run is a timeless classic. It's required reading even if you don't intend to read the rest of the series. Rabbit at Rest is also quite good and Rabbit is Rich got me horned up with their country club swinger friends.
>>25469729Updike writes remarkably unsexy sex scenes. That said Rabbit cucking his deadbeat son in book 4 git me.
